You can also use them as sling ammo, as long as you know how to break the stone down.

Get a hammer and a chisel (both being either crafted by intermediate smiths, chisel being sold at the NPC outside Silverbrand), use the chisel while holding hammer and chisel in hand, stone in belt and you will start to craft on the stone... you will get a nice stone and some pebbles from that. The stone is used to build things, the pebbles are used as ammunition for slings (now available by tailors).
