The yellow cross only has a North graphic. Bloody thing. Someone needs to paste it in the other frames.

Thank you all for your comments.

To be honest, I don't know exactly, why it was removed. But the new druid system is in work and one part is already active on the testserver.

Explanation: The "yellow cross" is technically a NPC. Because NPCs are turning around all the time, the yellow crosses are only visible when they face north.

Thats wrong.
NPCs do NOT turn around randomly. They are shown in the client in the false direction, because there is a misstake in the communication of client and server that causes that the client does not know, in what direction the character ( player, monster, npc ) looks. So the client shows the character in a random direction. At the next update the client gets the look at information and turn the character to the correct direction.
Thats it.

Can't you just give it a south/west/east graphic, all of which are exactly the same?

Hum. The Cross.

Well, the first problem was it wasn't where I was looking for it.

I found some gravestones in the ?NE corner of Trollbane. But no cross there.

I remembered an altar in the libary, but was unable to open the door to get in.

I was then shown the way - and my huge thanks for that, and the subsequent healing & RP - and there was no Cross there. Not only was there no cross, there was no graveyard, no church, nothing that I would expect to be around a resurection point implied to be a huge great cross.

It is another example of things not quite working the way I expected them to.

It would be less of a problem if I had found a map with 'X marks the spot' or had occasional lines of "you feel drawn to the south", "You feel drawn to the east" or some method of guiding me to the right point. But, beyond being shown, there is no other method of finding it.

Of course, having it visable at all would also help.

Take Care
Morden.

The problem there is, that there isn't jsut one cross and I don't know if the client could find out where exactly is the shortest path to the nearest cross, this might need some coding.

Trivial, dear. The client of course has no clue, but the scripts can find out. Even I could code that ^_^.

Anyway, a sophisticated death system might be an option. It is close to primitive to have all shrines resurrect PCs and teleporting a dead char upon death is also pretty simple. But a true concept has not been found yet, any suggestions?

This is great, you are open for suggestions yet not a single response! heh. Obvious that the death system is a tough issue but perhaps the system isn't totally messed up but needs a little tweaking?

My personal issues with dying is the movement rates. Since you "look" like a floating ghost my brain expects the character to "act" like my "understanding" of how a ghost would. I know that might be a silly statement to make but I'm sure we all have similar characteristics of what ghosts can or can not do. And I'm pretty positive that ghosts would not be slowed down by dirt.

With that said, I feel that if you made the ghost able to pass through objects, trees, buildings, rocks, ect, and did not suffer the effects of terrain then it would feel more like a ghost and navigation to find the yellow cross not such a "chore" that it currently is.

My only other gripe that I have with the whole death system is how fast objects on your body disappear. I simply can not wrap my brain around how fast objects decay in the world. I feel it is too contrived and punishing to have them last so short of a time. I don't know if it was designed this way to cut down on server resources or simply to be an extreme "punishment" for the character. However I am NOT saying that I should be able to keep all of my stuff or that it needs to be easy, but as it currently is, it is too punishing.

Can the decay rates be adjusted to last longer? Can the ghost act more like a clichéd ghost?

The char, if "killed" is not a ghost but more or less handled as a heavinly wounded char, so you are not really a cloud/ghost.

The decay system is a bit "difficult" basicly every item has some "rot points" means if a sword has 3 points it lives trougth two rot cyrcels and is deleted the third time. Every 4 minutes the rot cyrcel makes another sweep across the map, that means your Items could be laying on the ground for 4 minutes or just fopr ten seconds, before the rot cyrcel is full again, there are several proposals regarding the rot cyrcel allready, some of them iinclude filling up the "rotpoints" as soon as a char picks it up, but they are jsut not implemented yet, so you more or less need luck or someone who picks your stuff up.

That's non-offical. If one wants to play it this way, it's OK, but technically one IS a ghost/cloud and NOT a wounded character. This state may be interpreted in different ways. See: http://illarion.org/community/wiki/index.php/Death

Haha the first 8 pages of this thread are dedicated to my n00bness. I was XPunkGuiiTArX too. Then Arien got all mad at me and scared me to death so I made Wyrda and kept on asking my noobly questions. I was bad. I mean, if i saw that today on someone else I would think they were just dumb.

I have one problem with this. If I am a ghost after I die, why is my movement speed still effected by the terrain I am traveling on.... if I am a ghost, I have no feet. If I am a ghost, why do I have to travel around trees and bushes, if I am merely a shadowy wisp of my human form. Makes no sense to me at all.

The answer here is simple, if you put in more land, put in more crosses. The crosses must be visible when dead and have graphics for all directions. Have a defining characteristic to the living, say a graveyard, so the new players have some idea of where to go to if they do die. You have 100 square units of land, you have 1 cross.... You have 1000 square units of land, you have 10 crosses. Just random numbers, but you get my drift. If you want me to be a ghost after I die, treat me like one. Give me all the advantages and disadvantages of being one... not just a bit of this and a bit of that.

Lastly, make it possible for me to get at least some of my gear/items back!!!! Some players, like myself, believe that role-play include doing player quests in game, exploring, finding things to return to another player for prestige, money or just for the fun of the adventure. If I die and it takes me an hour to find a cross ( *grumble*), and an hour to get back to my body, it is pretty disheartening to know that it takes 5 minutes for it all to degrade and disappear. No chance of getting it back.... No fun at all.

Well whats your solution then, making every ghostdropped things unrottable, increase the rotcyrcel, which means farmers and other people who need rotcycel(miners so stones regrow, lumberjacker so trees regrow and so on) will have to wait even longer?

Simple fact, don't walk around exlporing on your own if you can't run away or can't fight, ask people if they walk around with you and create some rp, which can be quiete funny or just ask people if you should avoid certaint places on the island.

As long as I know only gm chars can walk over water and trougth walls, that means every ghost would get a certaint extra status somehow, have no idea how much scripting time that needs, but as allready mentioned some kind of tracking device would be usefull and not that hard to script.

Just some notes: First off, I think there is a certain intention behind item drop upon death. You know, when one should be able to retrieve them everytime, it does not make much sense to drop them in first place, no? But rotting of items could be improved in general, that's a different subject, though.

There is a movement mode called "fly". Many monsters use it, e.g. flies. I cannot estimate wether it is feasable or how effort it is to make a ghost "fly", a dev might know. If you want, write a proposal about this on the proposal board. It's a valid proposal and good idea. Also, see the related topic about death systems there, this might be a better thread to discuss such things.

To turn off clipping (=to be able to walk through walls as ghost) might be possible as well. But I doubt it is a good idea, for one would be able to reach places one is not ment to reach on the map as ghost.

Why not include this with your warping proposal, if you reach certaint points or borders so to say the ghost gets teleported away, just like a cross pushes away monster?

Like the lizard thing, you'd have to put one in ALL the outside of the sea, among other places. And plus, push things are bugged so if you have two ghosts they could get past the push bit and go to the gm castle or somewhere else.

Pellandria, you missed my point.

As a ghost I can't do anything.... and I didnt say that I wanted ALL my stuff back, but a small chance of getting a few of the items back would be nice.

Why is it every time someone gives a suggestion on how to make something better, the get attacked? Pffft, why bother

Last post from me, and I will probably never play again.

Happy Rping

Attacking, seriously I simply asked you how you want accomplish that, thats not attacking, that is asking, you allready have a chance if you travel with several persons or if you are fast enough, there are no other ays except you include some script...and any suggestions to this point would be nice, instead of "I don't like it, change it, I don't care how".

Oh and if you tell your friends you like the colour blue and they respond with "nah I like green better" you don't come with "why do you attack my opinion..why do you hate me so much?" or, think about that before you overreact.

Actually, I think Pellandria was perfectly reasonable in the ghost conversation (though I don't know if there was previous contact between the two of them).

Part of the point of the 'newbies' board is so that we can be brought up to speed on the reason the game works as it does. The retrocell explanation was something I had surmised, but it's good to know that it does, in fact, work the way it does.

Ask IG a player, for example Thorin Sulfgar or GRyphius Messerzunge.

Look through the Guild boards for Varshikar. If the information has been 'posted' there it's available IG.

Pins

Post by fokker »

hello everyone. Started playing recently and I must say I like the game. Did a lot of reading, wiki-ing and searching, and with a lot of IG questions and thanx to your patience, I am well on my way of becoming a good lumberjack/carpenter.

Now I have a realtivelly short question and I would be very gratefull if someone can help me with this - where can I find pins (needed for basic wooden shield)? Tried a lots of places in Trolls Bane and Tol Vanima no luck. I aleady bored a lot of people IG, but unfortunatelly I do not speak the "old language" (even if I am from the old continent), so it makes things a bit hard.

Thanks in advance, and really sorry if the answer is obvious and I somehow missed it.

Regards,
Darmad
