Yeah, totally, when you reach a certain level in the skill in question.
Under certain circumstances, the following can happen:
-no lvl up at all in millions of attempts (item is too easy)
-no lvl up in thousands of attempts even if skill is very low (MC-cap reached)
-no lvl up in thousands of attempts if skill is high

I`m no smith so i ask:
May tools,(for example a sickle) still be manufactured partially, without having the complete object(-picture) with the %-count?
(i had sickleblades, and gave them away, is there any chance to receive ones again, or were they taken away from the game?)
~collector of things~
---
Bin kein Schmied also frage ich mal:
Koennen Werkzeuge, (zum Beispiel Sicheln) immer noch teilweise hergestellt werden, ohne das komplette Objekt(-bild) mit dem %-Zaehler zu erhalten?
(Ich hatte Sichelklingen, und gab Sie fort, ist da irgendeine Moeglichkeit, wieder welche zu erhalten,
oder wurden sie aus dem Spiel genommen?)

It will be redundant to say that I am new after mentioning this why state the obvious. I have to say that blindly trying to learn how to do stuff in game is not very intuitive in the least bit. There is no consistency in the game world mechanics so every action has a seemingly different user method to enact the action.
For example to saw logs you don't click use on the saw but instead you select the table to saw the logs. However all the other tools such as the slicer or carving tools are accessed by using them while you are holding them. This makes learning how to do things in game extremely frustrating.
I am not asking for a "how to do everything" for the game because I do like trying to figure things out. It's part of the fun of exploring but it really becomes frustrating when I try out a few dozen combinations just to try do one simple task. Some things I still have no clue how to do them or what is even required to accomplish them.
Yes I know that I could just find some veteran player that knows how to do stuff. But that is not my point. If the game world was much more consistent this would help me as well as future players to learn how to interact with the environment better.
I know it seems like I am bashing the designers but really I'm not. I think the game has huge potential to be a fun game and I like how the world is so interactive. With the added role playing atmosphere this game has much more to offer than thousands of mindless games out there. I like Illarion and want to see it succeed.

I get your point, but I can also see what you're asking of the designers.Krumple wrote:

As far as I can tell, the code for the game has 'grown organically' and been through many hands over a period of years. I'd be surprised if there is consistent documentation, and straightening it out would be a huge task - one which *might* well be taking away from what they are getting out of this (vast and unpaid) endeavor - a chance to really work up their coding skills.
True, trying to straighten out the spaghetti code might be preparation for what 'real world' programming often ends up as, but I can't blame them for preferring to take up the more entertaining parts of the challenge.
Which means, for the users, that we've got to find ways to work with things. Fortunately, there's a really good wiki, with a lot of user encoded documentation. IF you discover some 'how tos' which aren't in the wiki, you can (and should) put them in yourself. This way we can all add to the community.
The crafting system was done basically by two hands. Both are mine
And "inconsistent" is a question of how you see it. The point of the whole redoing was to make it consistent.
The gathering of the ressources work always in the same way ( use the tool ) for mining, lumberjacking and all the other crafts.
Refining of the ressources work always the same ( use the static tool ) for sawing logs, melting ingots and so on.
And the producing of the final items work always the same ( use the tool and select the thing you want to create with a menu ) for smithing and carpentery.

Ok fair enough however why have it that two of the three systems use the tool function but the third (refining) doesn't use the tool but you still need a tool in hand before it would work. If you are cutting logs into board why wouldn't you design it so you can use the saw instead of needing to to use the table? And "inconsistent" is a question of how you see it. I apologize if I am being anal and feel free to tell me to stfu but this is the hurdle that every single new player will need to get over, much like I had to. That is unless they had a very helpful guide holding their hand, which I do not have...
Have you looked over the wiki? I've found it really helpful so far.Krumple wrote: I apologize if I am being anal and feel free to tell me to stfu but this is the hurdle that every single new player will need to get over, much like I had to. Thats just it Korm, you have failed to understand...
It might be all and well for you who have it all figured out but for me who has just started and all those who will start in the future, perhaps will not figure it out and quit.
Since I am an idiot you'll have to explain to me how this makes sense.
Ok so when you want to saw logs into boards you hold the saw but "use" the table? The table doesn't do the sawing, the saw does. So why not when you want to use the slicer, you don't "use" the table? After all both require that you stand in front of the work bench, so why don't you also "use" the table when you want to slice or carve something?
For the geniuses out there, it really probably doesn't matter if you had a dozen different ways to complete a task, but for someone like me who is probably overly compulsive about the "game world" making sense that it is easy to get frustrated. I'm sure I'm not alone and perhaps there are others out there who have thought similar but it didn't bother them as much as it does me to say something about it.

Ok, the problem is, in the way I see it, is that each way to use an item, has ONE result. To saw boards you must USE the table, while holding a saw. Carving tools opens ONE window. Slicer opens ONE window. Using the table, while holding these and not holding a saw, does nothing. Basically... Immagine a locked cabnit, three doors, each with a different key. The slicer is one key, the carving is anouther, and the table plus the saw, opens anouther.
I know this isn't really how it works, but making everything the same, makes it rather repetitive.

With this analogy of the three keys would mean that to open one of the doors you would use the lock instead of using the key, but for the other two locks you use the key instead of the lock. Does that really make sense?Immagine a locked cabnit, three doors, each with a different key. The slicer is one key, the carving is anouther, and the table plus the saw, opens anouther.
This isn't a very good explanation as to why either because a task will eventually become repetitive anyways. And if repetitiveness was really the reason then why not code it so that you could use a tool or the bench in many different ways? So to complete a task there could be dozens of different ways which have the same result...I know this isn't really how it works, but making everything the same, makes it rather repetitive.

Ok. Found the game today and have been exploring.
First disclaimer: This is a long thread, I'm tired and slightly confused so I have only skim read bits of it. If what I am about to say has been said before, ignore/delete it. These are my experiences/opinions, and probably worth exactly what you payed for them (ie nothing).
If I remember correctly, this thread was started as 'be nice to the newbies, help get them involved.' So I thought that telling you my experience would help. Don't get me wrong, I do like this game. I want to play it. But playing it wasn't actually very easy.
The introduction:
I very nearly gave up trying to get the game to work at all. Downloading the client was easy enough, however it crashed complaining about my computer being unable to cope.
I opened up the settings on the client - and there were defaults for none of them. I had no idea what a reasonable value for these was, so just made some up. It still wouldn't play.
After reading the forms, I found several threads complaing about the same thing and forcably installed new drivers for the 3D card. It worked! At last!
I entered the game - and couldn't work out how to do anything. I couldn't even move. I had found the manual, and re-read it it. I walked around using the cursors, as I was suposed to. The main reason this confused me is it was a graphical interface and everything else responded to the mouse, so I assumed it was some form of point-n-click approach.
I spoke to the green guy in the libary. I couldn't make him say anything helpfull. I looked at the bookshelves, they didn't seem to do anything helpfull.
I wandered around outside, generally being nosy and ended up chatting to someone who was kind & helpfull and sent me off to kill some pigs. Which I duly did.
Around about the point when I was thinking I had killed enough pigs, I met someone else. I have have been the first chap come over to see how I was doing (if it was, thanks). An orc attacked him, seemingly without explanation. So, I piled in.
He mutters something about a theft. The fight breaks up, and re-starts again a couple of times. Either the server or my client crashes. I log back in again, and discover that everything I had done before has been forgotten - no pork or pig skins in my inventory etc.
At this point I figure I really, really need to work out how to log out cleanly. So I start reading what documentation I can find. I can't work it out - this doesn't mean that it isn't there, and probably somewhere obvious, but I didn't find it. Being a brazen so-and-so I post a request for simple information to the help board, proving to everyone concerned that I am an idiot.
I check back in the client, to find that the orc has found me, killed me an looted my body. I now have no gear, no real idea how to earn money/find more gear, and need to find the graveyard. As you are asking for a high RP game, I figure dead guys can stay dead and go and create a new character - partly because it is now easier than trying to acheave anything with my first one.
Having to generate a new character disapoints me slightly, because I liked the background of the first one and I don't want to just remake him, different name or not.
However, I do now have the faintest idea what I am doing and set off exploring again. I wander around a bit, chat to a few people and generally start exploring again.
All is, finally, good.
However, I have been playing the game for most of the day in order to get to this point. I have had to trawl through the forum boards, and the website. if I did not really REALLY want to play this game - and I do, I like the level of RP you have and are encoraging, I would have given up. I have spent all day playing, and still don't really know what I am doing.
New players do not want to wait. They want to - unsurprisingly - play the game. They want to get involved. They want to do stuff. They don't want to read twenty pages of documentation. In most games, they want to start killing and looting things, here I wanted to get involved in the RP and story.
The Good:
Thank you to everyone I have met in game so far. You have all (with the exception of one orc, and I am still not sure quite what happened there) been very friendly and helpfull and tolerant. You make the game, and you have (mostly) sold me on it.
Once I understood how the interface worked, it was lovely and simple. Right click on everything, move with cursors.
The skill central character advancement is something I have been wanting in something like this for ever. Leveless, semi-classless, open ended, but due to the stat restrictions one advanced character can't do everything awesomely. Seeing this made me a very happy man.
The odd:
Movement limitations during combat. Took me a while to figure out what was happening here - i was putting it down to lag somewhere.
The Annoying:
These are the things that for one reason or another are already starting to annoy me:
'Someone': Good idea in theory - horrid in practice. I have no idea who anyone is. AT ALL. Ok, so they havn't introduced themselves to me properly so I don't know their name - but can I at least have some form of (very short) description please? Or different icons? Or something? It's confusing.
Terrain effects on movement: Walking everywhere is boring enough without making it even slower. Keep it for combat time, please.
AI shopkeepers: Again, I can understand the theory, but can we just have a normal shop please? I am sure my character is quite capable of buying breakfast, without getting confused. I am sure he knows what to say, or that the shopkeeper will understand him when he points to the eggs and holds up half a dozen fingers. Searching for AI triggers for such a basic function is a pain in the ass.
Edit:
An The Ugly:
I started writing this as I was unable to log in because of what I thought was another client/server glitch. Turns out my character is banned. I have no idea why. With absolutely no idea what I have done wrong, and therefore no way to change it that is rather the end of that. What a waste of my time and effort.

Re: Feedback from a Noob
First off, welcome : ).
Edit: Don't give up yet, even if you got a bad start, some players are ass and seem to pick on newbies but after going trought all this you don't want to stop yet or, the game generally has no goal and just a few quests and the only thing to do is to "rp" just play your char according to your background and you will soon see that Illarion has to offer a certaint charm that is left out by many games, all your "complaints" about the movement and the "what to do" things will soon be ended, as a newbie Island is allready in work.
You must give the player some kind of sign that you "check the char out"just something like "#me lets his eyes travel over the man" or "#me exames the elfess" than you generally get a description of the char, devs are working on some kind of paperdolling/look at command.Morden wrote:Annoying:

Its more realistic this way and if you aren't carryieng heavy burdens, you should just come along fine.Morden wrote: Terrain effects on movement: Walking everywhere is boring enough without making it even slower. Keep it for combat time, please.

You might have had a bad name, I guess if you send a pm on some Mod like Arian or Dev (Nitram) they will work that out.Morden wrote: Edit:

As for the someone 123456, if you overhear the name, or have somethign you want to mark him with type in what you want "Weird person" , right click and choose "Give name"
-
Don't give up, in the end its worth it

Hm, well, from what I can gather from your post, I doubt you got banned for rule breaking, more than likely it was just a name problem. I'm sure if you talk to a GM, you can have the name changed to something more suitable. As for the other things, if you, or anyone else for that matter, needs some help figuring out the controls, do feel free to send me a private message, I will try to find you and help you out if I can. Welcome to Illarion, avoid the PKers and PowerGamers, and most of all, I hope you enjoy your stay here.

I am new to this game as well, and I have to admit, if someone asked me how my first week playing Illarion was, I would say...
frustrating.
I agree with Krumple. Nothing is used in the same way. If you fail, you are told, if you continue working, it tells you. Why doesn't it tell you when you are successful?
I agree with Morden, death sucks. The first time I died, I got a cryptic message about finding a yellow cross. In all my travels I had not seen a yellow cross, nor did I have any clue where to find one. By the time I did find one, and got back, all of my items were gone. Wasted away to the nether, and the 5 hours I had spent in game, picking up herbs, walking back and forth selling my wares for a few copper, was lost. Again...
frustrating.
I have read the wiki, and it has helped, with some topics, but others, there is no information to be found. On the main website, I did a search for Herb Lore, or Alchemy, the most recent News post is from 2003.... only to find out an hour later, after scanning through countless posts, that herb lore/alchemy has been suspended!?!?! Again...
frustrating.
And why does everyone look identical? No matter what you are wearing, and what you are holding, you look identical to everyone else. Personally, I find it a lot easier to role-play, if I look the part.
I like Illarion as a game. I like the RPing. For the most part, I have a good time playing it, and I would say 80% of the community I have met has been helpful. Banning a player with no warning is rude. Send an email, tell them why they have been temporarily banned, and get them to fix the problem. How can you expect to enlarge your community if you ban people and not tell them why?
Just my 2-cents,
Catandra

I can't believe that message hasn't been changed since the look of the yellow cross changed. The ""yellow cross" is a pillar that resurrects you when you approach it, it is at the north end of town. It looks kind of like a traffic light, only...not sure how to describe it >.>.Catandra wrote: I agree with Morden, death sucks. The yellow cross is actually invisible most of the time.Azuros wrote:The ""yellow cross" is a pillar that resurrects you when you approach it, it is at the north end of town. It looks kind of like a traffic light, only...not sure how to describe it >.>.

And it's on a stone slab behind the Seahorse near the well. More west-ish. It used to be north, but it was moved a while ago. If you try crossing that stone slab, you might trip on the cross.
Re: Feedback from a Noob
I would also like to empasise that I was not complaining, nor requesting anything be changed. The post was simply a 'These are my feelings and experiences, for what they are worth.'
I have an apology to make. This part was my mistake, it was a name problem and I WAS emailed to explain. I just didn't check that email account until this morning. So, well, Sorry folks!Morden wrote: An The Ugly:
I started writing this as I was unable to log in because of what I thought was another client/server glitch. Turns out my character is banned. I have no idea why. With absolutely no idea what I have done wrong, and therefore no way to change it that is rather the end of that. What a waste of my time and effort.
