The path of Zhambra, part 2

Post by Gwendolin Cad'ell »

Six whole months. Six whole months have passed since Gwendolin left Gobaith. Over 3 of these months she has been travelling through Salkamar, even at the borders of Albar, to find her destination and to follow her gods call. To become a priest. It was a journey like she has never travelled one before. A journey of small wonders, prayers and even fights. Afterthis travel along with Zeljka the young paladin apprentice, her theoretical education had begun. Gwendolins case was an exception and even Gwendolin had to struggle hard to be allowed this honour to be educated by the salkamarian priesthood, she never have had the feeling that this wasn't Zhambras will.

And now after 6 months she stood behind this altar of the temple she came once. Sitting next to the beggar in the last row and listening to the priest that had stood in the spot where she was right now. It was done. Since the night before she has been initiated and she was now a priestess of Zhambra. Gwendolin knew that this was only a title to achieve. A name to wear. And names weren't important in faith. But Gwendolin was a woman of tradition and also she was salkamarian. Even though she had held one or two sermons before, she always had longed for Salkamars official sanction to 'be a priestess'.

Gwendolin blew out the candles and took a deep breath. It was quiet in the temple that has been crowded with people just a few moments ago. The heavy gates where wide opened and the sunlight brightened the white marble ground of the temple. It has been her first official sermon and she has been very satisfied with it. Ever since her journey as a 'wander priest' she has become aware of how oppressive this calling was. Spending strength, hope and comfort to people of all age and all ranks. It was much more sacrificing than even she had imagined. But it was what she wanted. It fulfilled her.

Early in the morning, Jorokar was already all set and ready by the docks, standing towards the edge of the pier. The skies were only a little cloudy on that day, and at the horizon, they were highlighted with an orange-red color as the sun slowly rose above the ocean. Despite him being earlier than planned, the ship was already there waiting, rocking only gently on that rather calm sea.

An hour had passed and the ship captain walked out of the small cabin to check on the man who still hadn’t put foot on the vessel. Jorokar was gazing towards the outer seas with a stern, thoughtful look. He felt a heavy weight inside him that made it hard for him to simply board on ship. He had a family to take care of, and Ayla surely needed him but he would be no good right now if he remained on the island. The recent days had proved that, and he regretted his own behavior.

He was soon led out of his musings as the captain called for him:

"Lad, ye hoppin’ on?"

Jorokar stared at the other brawny man inattentively while vaguely nodding his head. It was a few moments after when Jorokar actually stepped onto the wooden plank and finally embarked on the vessel. The board was then raised, ropes untied and sails unleashed, the small galley finally drifted away from the docks, stirred around and navigated to the west. Throughout the seafaring trip, the travelling man barely every chatted with anyone on board. For the most of the time, he lolled in that raggedy bed or simply watched the roughening seas from the sides of the ship.

-------------

Dusk had already approached when the ship was coming close to the land. From that distance and in that darkness, one could spot the large lit torches situated in the various regions of what could be deduced to be a massive and vast city. It was a spectacular sight, even though the buildings were barely any visible. The ship carefully moored into the city’s substantially large harbor, until the ropes were tied to the wharf and the wooden plank was lowered.

"Here we are, lad. Welcome to Salkamar."

And with a deep breath, Jorokar disembarked the ship and marched onto still land. The dockyard was fairly quiet at that time, with scarcely any activity going on but still not entirely dormant. Following indications and signs, he made his way through the path until at least he found himself inside the wondrous and famous city of Salkamar, where people still loitered about the darkened streets, carrying torches or lanterns. He felt totally lost inside the enormity of the city and there could have been so much to see and do, but for that night, it was best for him to simply find a place to rest and have a peaceful sleep which is undisturbed by swaying motions like that inside the ship.

-------------

During the next few days, he travelled around Salkamar, visiting various places of interest which amazed him, occasionally chatting with a few people for information and perhaps every now and then even enjoying a late evening in a tavern. Never did he see a city of such scale; he could easily spend months there, but his money was running low and at that realization, he started heading for his aimed destination: the sanctuary.

In the next morning, Jorokar at last reached his targeted location. Having noticed that an oration was underway, he decided to sit outside and patiently wait it to end. Whilst waiting, he managed to doze off easily, due to him having stayed up late at the tavern the preceding night. He was quickly stirred out of his snooze when the heavy gates of the temple fully opened. Jorokar stood from where he was and walked towards the entrance, but stepped aside for now, waiting for the people to walk out. Once the place calmed down, the visitor proceeded diffidently through the doorway and stopped the moment he caught the sight of the woman by the altar, dressed in a white robe. That golden hair of hers that flowed freely down her back gave a somewhat familiar look, but he couldn’t recall at that particular time.

Hence, with a hesitant voice, he spoke in order to try and get the woman’s attention.

"Ex..Excuse me, ma’am?"

Gwendolin closed the book infront of her with her personal notes for her sermons. She had noticed the heavy footsteps on the marble floor. Someone was approaching and it didn’t surprise her. On her journey as a wander priest people often came to her later on to speak about personal matters and seeking for help. Gwendolin raised her head as the man spoke to her and she smiled warmly at him. But some confusion flickered in her eyes. This face looked very familiar to her. She was sure she has seen it before.
Be greeted… don’t I know you from somewhere? Aren’t you one of Dantagons men? Squire Sladrir?”

It must be. Gwendolin had seen him but a very few times before. Although her crystal blue eyes didn’t give away her sudden excitement, but she was afraid that this meeting wasn’t a coincidence. Did something happen on Gobaith? Something with Ascius? Something that could not be said in a letter?

How can I help you…?”

The man stood close to the entrance for some moments, him being clothed in simple linen tunic and pants with a dark red wool robe on his back. Strapped to his thick leather belt was a sturdy scabbard containing a fine long sword. He slowly took some steps further inside but stopped once again the moment she looked at him, the same confusion that crossed her expression could be seen in his own face too. It was only when she mentioned Dantagon that he remembered. It was a strange coincidence to find particularly her at this place, totally unexpected.

"Lady…Cad’ell? What a surprising occurrence to meet you here."

He was unintentionally assuring her that he was not particularly searching for her to spread some news. Following his words, he glanced around the place as if he was looking for someone else, being unsure whether she was the right person to speak to. After all, he wasn’t certain of her tasks or reasons to be at this place.

"I have travelled here to Salkamar in hopes to…strengthen my faith. You see, I have been recently raised to a Knight, but I feel something lacking inside me and to be honest, I have never had a strong and robust belief. But then again, I’m not really accustomed to this place and I’m rather unsure of who exactly to inquire regarding this."
