Something to discuss
In Illarion, i noticed there are no family or 'clans', whatsoever, making it only to worry about yourself, and maybe your friends. If, people started forming families (even just one parent with 'adopted' children, uncles, or nephews etc.) will make people not just get food for themselves because they depend on it, but the lives of their family does too. Other things like violence or lack of money also makes families stay close.
Hm, there are families. Very small ones, but families nonetheless.
One of my very own characters has a family starting, after all. But yes, I definitely believe this would be a good idea. It's so much more challenging when a character has to provide not only for themselves but for other too. It adds to the game a lot, though it makes for hard "Decisions" for a character. Perhaps others should consider. ^_^

My main char has got four wifes in the four years I played him regulary.
The problem with families is, that you depend on other peoples will to play.
If the PO of your chars wife stop playing Illarion, you have to explain, why you haven't got a wife anymore. The same with sons or daughters. Happened at least four times to my main char ... so on long time, playing families doesn't really work.

Great, more of em...ugh...I can barely stand the one...
Families exist, and even if they don't...I basically consider a char's friends IG as their family. Friends stick together, and sometimes friends will kill for one anouther. Basically...any guild could be seen as a family, not to mention the fact that friends are sometimes more often seen together than a person's family. Consider this, who do you see more often, friends, or family. Most characters are in their 20's range, and often have moved away from their parents, parents are dead...basically the parents aren't around any more.
