Is there any way to inspect a merchants goods before buying them? Also, is there any way to find out what a merchant will pay for my goods?
Oh, and when I bought a sword and equipped it my shield disappeared.

No you cannot inspect the quality or condition of a weapon/armor/tool that a merchant sales, you can only ask them to "List your wares". When you ask "help" to an NPC it does list a template for asking the NPC how much he will pay for a particular item but it does not work in English......... might in German but I wouldn't know. As for your shield disappearing that is a glitch.... I have had similar things happen if you want to report it go here
