being a thief
one of my characters is a thief/bandit etc. is there any way to properly roleplay this or is there a system for stealing things and what does the thieving skill do.

Aye there is a proper way to rp your thief character but it doesn't mean you will get away with anything and he/she will probably get put in jail eventually. Just dont be one of those thieves that #me uses the most impeccable forms of stealth and cannot be seen nor heard. Hehe that is silly. Also try not to use the technical flaws in the game, hiding in the shadow of a building for example these things will get you in trouble and people will complain. In other words dont rob someone then go behind a building's shadow to get away. Sure you can #me lurks around the shadowy side of the building thats alright but dont use glitches in the game to your advantage.

Don't play a thief as a first char, any bad char must have very good rp, sadly most of our baddies don't have good enough rp for playing a "good" bad char.
The main "problem" might be, that you need to react and give situations where another player can say "yes here I can decide what my char would do" if you just go around and force rp like "#me shoves his hands into xyz's bag and pulls out everything, while holding a dager to xyz's stomach" noone will have any fun playing with you.
Let the people know that your char looks strange, that he may be hooded or is standing around completly still, while watching people pass, don't just jump behind someone and make a "#me holds a dagger to xyz throat", but sadly most of the "good" ones play their chars with x-rayvision and spider senses, seeing everything behind them and greet people who walk past their backs, but well you need to play with try and failure, so my advise, play a "good" char first, play a merchant or something, get into the atmosphere, learn to rp and make rp situations, then you can start to play a bad char and never forget, you play ths game with people, don't just play for your fun alone and be selfish, but also bring fun to other player.

I would say, do not play a thief. Thievery is not yet supported well.
1.You have no control over how much people will drop on their ground, no way to know it is the whole bag or they just picked something to sacrifice.
If they have a golden ingot and an apple, they will just give you the apple.
2.Most people will immediately fight back, and most likely kill you, or they will just walk off so you cannot hurt them. It's funny how everyone answered those questions about RP at account creation, but so few of us actually follow those rules.
These two facts will make you angry and you will end up killing somebody when trying to rob them. They will remember your ID and recognize you very soon publicly, and you will be put in jail and/or banned from town.
Thieves are meant to stay on the outskirts, which means your trading opportunities will be highly limited. Literally, you will have to wait for people to come online, who are willing to secretly deal with you. If those people play in different times that you do, you're in trouble.
Been there. Do not play a thief unless you plan to end up defeated. Play a character you can socialize with and make friends.

Everyone is saying don't make one, but Dash is one of my most liked chars in game (though i am pretty sure some people hate him too...) Almost everyone recognizes him as a thief, and if not suspects him to be one but is still generally well liked by the PO's. So if you can pull it off, being a baddie is really fun. If your in it to steal and get rich and kill, maybe not so much. My char is mostly just suspicious looking and says shady stuff, very few times has he actually tried to steal. I only ever attempted to steal 3 times with him. One i let him be caught by the dwarves of silverbrand. once he randomly met a druid but then backed down because he felt guilty cause he thinks druids are nice. they only time i ever got goods was with the help of a GM char who let me rob his house. So if you want to play a baddie, go ahead, but do it for the right reasons.

Don't play a baddie if you are new, thats "stupid" we allready got enough newbie played bad chars, they just give the bad chars a.."bad light", learn to rp first and then play a bad char, I don't want another " comes up after yo, out of nowhere and stabs you in the back" thief, actually the facts are wrong aswell, if you meet the right persons and you just steal small things its alright, if I meet a good played theif, there was once these two boys , one distracted everyone other emptied your bags, then I will give something to them, bad played or forced thieferie won't get someting, this is as simple as pie.

Hmm. Well yeah, it's pretty much exactly what I'm saying. You can play a thief for some fun situations, but you cannot make a career out of it. You can play a petty thief, waiting for players or GMs to throw you a cookie for good roleplay (if you roleplay well, like Dash did, pretty much being a thief by personality, with a fun personality), but you do not want to be a major thief. You should not count on thievery as a thriving career. Being a thief, your fate will never be in your hands.
You will not be able to change anything, you will always depend on others keeping your secrets, and they usually won't. Don't try to be feared, people will not fear you. Generally, the public will just find someone more powerful than you and destroy you.
If your purpose is to become a notorious badass, don't do it as a thief, do it as a fighter on the side of law. People will respect you more.
Play a thief for RP situations and for funny moments of being caught, but not as a plan to get wealthy.
Finally, never, not even on forums, never take your worshipping of Ronagan public.
//edit: I guess what I'm trying to say is - this is not a multiplayer version of Thief. If you try to steal something in a major quest campaign, that GMs did not plan to be stolen, you will have little chance to get away with it. If you upset the majority, the majority will get upset, and you will get punished. The GMs usually will take the side of majority over the side of an individual, no matter how clever you think your thief plan was, unless the individual is himself already permitted to steal by the GMs. If you force stealing on others, they will not permit it, and you can only steal what your victims permit you to steal. Griefing in ruining people's plans - is not welcomed here. The best was to grief someone in this game is to become a politician

My two cents:
Whoever manages to really piss me off, is a bad guy.
To piss me off:
-discuss with me, inside the gm-castle
-destroy the fun of other players on purpose
-name me, a gm or a player with cusswords/insult them
everyone else, is wether a good roleplayer, or someone with potential to learn it (except AlexRose, he stays a noob)

Personally, I love a good robbery. The poorly rp'd ones I'm not crazy about but I still play along. I really think a layer of danger/badness adds some richness to the roleplay. I was pickpocketed by a halfling and a lizard, both awesome. I was held up various times by other characters and when it's well done, there's nothing like it.
Konrad is right that you can't make a living at it, though. The player being robbed has all the control about what to hand over. A thief will be always poor unless they have another way to make money. Also, the unskilled thief can only go so far with the highly trained fighter characters present.
So, I say go for it! Add a little spice.

My thief char was deleted ( Doyle ) but was very much fun to play.. she NEVER got any coins unless someone gave her some in RP, but got a lot of food. I would say if you expect to earn much as a thief/pickpocket/robber, it is more then likely you will eventually cause problems with other PO's. If you would just like fun at RPing the char and are new it may be better to check ooc. Typically, there were a few appeared not to want to RP a theft, ignoring my char and she went away. I agree, it is better to be in game and know your RP very well before becoming a thief.
PS Doyle was totally unskilled at anything, and she wore no armor, carried no weapon relying on her speed and agility (RP) rather then anything else.

Very helpful, good answer to the question thereNoradur wrote:My two cents:
