speeding up my computer

does anyone know how to put my computer into overdrive? i have windows xp. iv heard about it and thought it might help me in running illarion a bit more smothly. iv finnaly got it running on my pc, but its still fairly laggy. if you know anyother ways that would help that, id realy appreciat it,

The best way is to make sure not too many other programs are running.. only those necessary.

get the newest drivers for your hardware, learn to turn off all those background programs, before playing and so on.

if your system is old, i suppose it is so because you got no money for a new one. in that case it might be prudent, not to fry your CPU by overclocking.

some speed-ups/general maintanence:
-close background stuff (ctrl+alt+del)
-Defrag every so often
-Spyware checks
-Uninstall/delete unused stuff / things you dont need anymore

Fooser's very right with that.
Spybot is a very useful tool for getting rid of spyware. When i get "The computer is slow" messages from customers i drive to, they usually just have a load of spyware on their machine as well as many unnecessary programs and starters loading with the systemstart.

Just incase you don't know how exactly, or stuff, you can turn off some stuff that starts on startup:



Just choose 'run'(not exactly sure about the name in English so I makes you a nice screenshots!)

Go to that button I pressed, should be the same order, turn of all Microsoft services, and then you can turn off several annoying ones that you don't tend to use much.(I suggest keeping your firewall and stuff active :p)


You can also type %temp% in that box and delete your temporary files (I guess most are going "DOH", but I always had trouble remembering where to find my temp files are put, and this is a bazillion times faster.

You might not want to do this last one when you're working on something or the like save your work as it will quite possibly be in your temp directory.


Sorry if everyone already knew this, but I thinks it might help a bit, better give too much info instead too little.

Not a good idea to just turn off services if you didn't know what it's for. Might cause problems, such as... can't connect to internet is one of the thing.

For services, actually it's better to run "services.msc". You can set it as manual (normally only when the comp needs it), auto or disabled. Can stop the current running services as well.

If your computer is pretty stable (no crash and so forth), can kill the system restore service. This one usually used up lots of resources.
Windows firewall... normally rather a junk, i don't use it at least.

LOL, i once had a customer who disabled all microsoft services...
can proove to be a bad idea on a windows system.
But talking about msconfig, there you can take stuff like ICQ and some other usually unnecessary stuff out of the autostart.

okay, kevin, i have no clue waht i should and should not turn off.. i dont want to screw anything up, iv ahd to fix this computer befor, i dont feel like putting much more money into it to fix it again, lol
