black screen

hi,

I've read several threads about this(I did a search and read most of the first few pages) but I haven't found a way to fix my problem

I attempted to run the offline install it wouldn't allow me so I did the online installation and got to the log in screen, from there I entered my character's name and pw and the game screen(or what I assume is the game screen) opens but its completely black with the exception of the window's frame and it does nothing

I openned task manager to see what was happening, its using up RAM and uses up part of my processor as if the game was running, but under the networking tab the line is flat so its not connecting(or attempting to connect) to the server

I tried to play first on sunday afternoon then again monday evening, late tuesday night into what is now wednesday morning(in case there were server problems on those days)

I've altered the options, I've uninstalled and reinstalled, I've checked my firewall, I have no clue what to do now

I have windows XP
directX 9.0c
512MB RAM
S3 graphics prosavage ddr
Compaq Presario
AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2400+
2.00 Ghz

Hey, and welcome to Illarion.

Before you start playing, check the online list on http://illarion.org/statistics/us_players.php If it says ' The server is offline now so nobody can play ', well, you have your explanation. If you see a list of characters (who are connected), then post again here so the ones who know can help out.

The server is currently running fine, so the source of the problem has to be something different.

When you start the client, does only a black screen appear or is the game interface visible as well ( the empty inventory at the right side of the screen and such )?

Then you should check if you have current drivers for your system.

Next question is: what Version of Java do you have?
The current build is 1.6.0_02-b06

You find it out of you do the following:

Start -> Run -> "cmd"

In the window that appears you type in "java -version" and press enter.
Then the version of your Java appears.

java version 1.5.0_06-b05 I read that it needed 1.5 so I didn't update when I was checking for problems but I will now

Try to update your hardware drivers as well.

thanks for the help, I updated drivers and java it works nowhad to leave but I'm back now and in game
