Iron ore!
How can I produce something out of it?
Someone willing to help me?

You use it to smith items. With a piece of coal, and iron ore in your inventory, shift+click and hold the hammer and then the iron ore. A menu will come up showing what you can smith. shift+click whatever you want to try making. It may take a few tries before you are successful at producing an item.

I used to think you needed to be near an anvil, but I noticed that it can be done away from an anvil...

Yeah, keep in mind that blacksmithing is very difficult to become skilled at.
