This would be the actual discussion thing for the topic. It's getting late now and I don't really have a completely formulated plan of my own, so meh. I'd be curious about what others have on their mind.
What do you, the players, think about things? Let the devs hear. The devs could use the stuff as resource from where to improve their own plans, if some worthwhile concepts come up.
However, some things are worth noting that I consider important:
It's not fair to give extemely important resources to really closed groups (and more importantly, things will probably get messed up..) In practice this could mean, that Trollsbane gets (F.I.) coal and Varshikar (F.I.) iron, that are both plentiful and close to a depot. Silverbrand, on the other hand, would get both Iron and Coal, but each of these would be either/and harder and longer distance away than in the other towns to ensure competition, while giving SB a bit of an edge with it's own smiths and a degree of self-sufficiency. This could also help to alleviate the problem, that there *might* not be meaningful resources for each and every settlement (And make clear that each new settlement should not automatically expect some special, unique resource...)
Everyone benefits slightly, and it means that it will still be profitable to haul things between the other cities. Of course, the actual distances should be adjusted properly after a time of experimentation.
Resources (Access, Availability and Location)

There are two types of resources in my opinion.
"Common" resources which are widely used
and
"Special" resources, which are more of a luxury, and aren't needed much.
To give an example, gems would be 'special', while coal would be 'common'.
I believe that Common resources should be avalible to everyone. If you have the correct Rp reason, there is no reason why your lizard can't become a smith. There is no reason to drain people off a common resource to allow 'trade'.
Special resources aren't very implemented, except for perhaps gold and gems. (and copper?)
In my opinion special resources shouldn't be readily avalible, and this will allow trade. In other words "If you want a better X, import the better resources, but if you want an X, there isn't anything to stop you"
An example would be a special ore only found in a particular mine, which would give a boost to the quality of the items, or a magic wood which makes wooden items much more lighter...

Perhaps I should have added (I didn't really thought about it)
that these resources are available for everyone, just in the wilderness. The availability doesn't have to mean easy access, but it means that people still aren't 'bound' by that.
The system will be largely meaningless, if only copper and such things are given special location.
There is no reason why a lizard can't be a smith, yeah.. but there is no RP-reason why lizardtown/the wannabe smith lizard should have the necessary resources in his respective town. He might buy them from the dwarves/Varshikari in return for fish, or something. Or he moves to someplace where he can get the raw material easier and be an apprentice, and returns to lizardtown when he's a ready smith.

Lol? You realise that there's basically no halflings in Greenbriar anymore and it's become the new German speakers' and powergamers' place of residence? Anyone can go in.Hadrian_Abela wrote:However some towns are restrictive..
Silverbrand, Greenbriar (not sure), Zzyathis... all need you to be of a particular race to join.
Again, I wouldn't LIKE to import tons of a basic material... if its a special material, its allright though...
One is just wasteful

I can't contribute much to this topic at the moment, since I would only be repeating what you already said.
The major villages (Trollsbane, Silverbrand, Varshikar, Vanima, Greenbriar) of the island should get very easy access to one selected ressource.
This does not mean that only this place has this ressource, it can have multiple sources somewhere in the wilderness, but its simply not that easy to get as in the village X.
Currently my suggestion is:
Trollsbane -> Coal (surface mining area close by)
Varshikar -> Gold / Gems
Silverbrand -> Iron
Tol Vanima -> [not yet to be revealed]
Greenbriad -> insane amout of cropland (?)
