I can't figure out how to move around in the game, or how to talk.
Well, I sort of figured that out, but I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers on how to actually do things in game. Thanks!

The simple way for walking: Use the arrow keys
For talking: Just type and press enter

For more details read the manual.

Many items can be used by pressing the right mouse button and choosing "use". You have to stand right next to the item or have it in your inventory. You can drag small items into your inventory just like icons on your desktop.

Just try to open and close a door or pick some apples. Note that you have to right click on the tile the item "stands" on, so try the lower part of the item. You can do many things, including various kinds of crafts. Just ask any character you meet ingame to show you the ropes, most are friendly and help new players.

All I get when I open the game is a black screen with a character on the side. I can talk, but the majority of the screen (where I'd assume the map would be) is just blank, black space.

Do you think it could be a technical problem? :(

The server is down for the moment. It has been since hours. Currently, there are a lot of bugs in the game since an update. That's why the server keeps crashing.

It might be up in an hour, or not until tomorrow.

Easy indicators for the server not being up are very static online-lists (the same number of players online for hours) or the black screen you encountered when logging in.

Okay, that clears things up. So I guess I'll just keep checking.

Thanks!

No problem, but don't wait too long. ;)

The server was down all night (or day, depends on the time zone I guess) yesterday, might be the same for today.

Unfortunately, only one person has physical access to the server out in Germany. It usually takes between 30 minutes to an upward of a full 12+ hours for him to realize the server is down and reboot it. He took a vacation once and left us without a server for a week.

Shall I find out his number? You can call him to punish him for having a life.

Neither is the server in germany (at this moment) nor is physical access needed to restart it. This is required only rarely, you notice such events when the website is down. This can have other reasons, too.

Topic is "Controls".
