Herblore

Post by Paean »

Hello all. I bought a sickle the other day, but I can't seem to find any herbs. I've browsed through some older threads, and some say you don't need the sickle, some say use it on farmlands, while others say use it on plants and flowers. I've tried all of those options, but I just can't find any herbs!

Now if if my eyesight was weaker I'd put the blame on that, but fortunately I'm young and the eyes are pretty sharp ..

Thyme? Rosemary? Both are good in low temperatures. I also rarely see flowers in winter, but they're popping up all over outside of Trolls Bane. The apples are still growing, and gosh darn it I picked cherries the other day - all in the middle of winter. Quite odd ..

There are some herbs growing if you know where to look. I think you also have to have a certain skill level in herb lore to find them. But the system has changed recently, so I'm not sure how accurate the information in the old posts will be.

We don't have these herbs in Illarion

I don't understand why we're grappling with specifics. An answer like Fianna's would have been much more helpful as opposed to the condescending response I received from you. I've read through the manuals, guides, fansites, background information, and just about everything I could find. No where in there did I see any explanation for trees growing and bearing fruit in the wintertime, or reasons for herbs NOT growing in the wintertime.

In game I've asked (at Trolls Bane tavern) if anyone had experience in collecting herbs, and if they'd be interested in exchanging a bit of their knowledge and experience for a few copper coins or a tune on my flute. Unfortunately I got no takers. This left me to post here, on the Newbies board, where I expected a polite response. Even a polite response telling me to try asking in character, in game would have been acceptable.

My point, Pellandria, is that it doesn't really hurt to answer nicely. You used a sarcastic and condescending tone. It put me off. Maybe you don't care, but if every newcomer gets slapped in the face for asking a simple questions it's probably going to be an ugly future.

Fianna, thanks. I tried in a few different places and managed to get the "Paean starts to search for herbs" message. I haven't managed to find any but I'll try later when the seasons change. :)

Hello Paean!

Welcome to Illarion. Indeed, a new crafting system has been recently implanted, and therefore, you need a sickle to find herbs, mushrooms, etc..
Now stand in front of flowers, grass, or something like that, and use your sickle on it.
You'll get the message 'Paean starts to search for herbs', and just wait. You might have to wait a while, and sometimes try again, it's not easy in winter.

Hope you have fun.

Thanks Karl. I'll keep trying, and maybe wait for the ground to thaw a bit. ;)

If the trees still got fruit on them they shouldn't. Every server restart or script reload gives them fruit though. Unfortunately some people got alot of nonsense up in their heads. :D Last time I checked trees don't grow from magical energy. Our farmer's would be archmages.

Grobul you should seriously think in more "fatastic way" Grain that grows in one hour (illa time) Trees that grow in less then one hour, you seriously want to explain it with "well its fast growing you know" instead of "the magic, which is always around everyone and flows trougth all things, lets the plants grow that fast".

yeah just my two cents.

I gave you a nice explanation why it "works" this way and then I'm bitched about geez reminds me why so many people leave illarion...whats wrong with my second answer seriously..?

No your right, on a third or fourth read through your answer wasn't as edged as I initially perceived it to be. I was probably still aggravated by the first message which I thought, and still think, had a rude tone to it. In any case, I'm sorry for the aggressive tone in my last post, though I do stick to the point I made in it, in a generalized way.

My apologies, mana flow or what have you is a perfectly reasonable explanation for IG. I am looking at this from a OOC point of view, and mana flow doesn't quite cover the technics of why the trees are still making fruit because they shouldn't be. The trees I saw were bare unless someone just picked them. :? I mean technically, trees shouldn't reproduce fruit once they are picked, if they are then they removed that part or its bugged.

Clearly, this mana flow arguement is an excuse, because the devs can't easily script it, not a reason for not scripting it.

An explanation OOC alongside a ingame explanation might also have done handsomely.

And actually your first and second post were quite condescending. To say, have you ever seen any herbs grow in winter, and for someone else to say, why yes rosemary and thyme do. Then for some reason you change the arguement to have you ever seen illarion herbs grow in winter. Clearly not, as no herbs grow in winter in Illarion!

And considering how winters in gobiath seem to last so long, maybe this whole winter system should be changed slightly, so at least some easy herb can be found in winter.

Alright, I wasn't going to get involved again, but...

There really are herbs growing, I promise. I think the herblore skill has to be fairly well-developed (Fianna's in bright green) and you have to look in the right places. There are no strawberries, but lots of others around. It seems that as you skill gain, the auto cycle will start in more areas when you use your sickle. I think they are harder to find in general, but the winter has certainly complicated things a bit. Although for my part, I like the little bit of realism that enters the game with the ground freezing in winter.
