Ugly grass

Post by martin »

Hi,

since many people don't like the ugly grass (including myself), i made a quick-and-dirty-workaround:
Download the file
http://stud3.tuwien.ac.at/~e9525060/grasspatch.zip
and simply unzip it into the file into your illarion-folder.
this isn't a piece of breugel or rubens (of whom i saw a lot of beautiful paintings today ;) ), however it prevents your eyes from taking damage.

You wouldnt happen to have patches for all the tiles would you, why on earth did they change them, they just look cheap and well, worthy of a stat game such as runescape.

WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE OLD ONES?

i have a huge wish martin, please change the background of the pockets, chests etc. black isn't good because it is difficult to see coal, ore and other dark items.

ich habe nen grossen wunsch martin, bitte änder den hintergrund der taschen und kisten. schwarz ist sehr schlecht da man dinge wie kohle, erz und andere die dunkel sind nicht bzw. nur kaum sehen kann.

Ahhh yes... I don't think the background color should be black.... it's very difficult to see.

I think the new tile graphics and client colours are.........um.....not to my tastes The grass was good as it originaly was I think. They looked great if anything they should have been modified to blend with each other better.

The old grass seemed to blend in well with the forest ground. Now it doesn't, and the forest ground is even lighter color than grass. The hedges are also bright and hurts the eye badly.
It all kind of looks like a children's cartoon...

you were all used to the old tiles.

to be honest, they were simply WRONG! there was a pattern in which they should have been set in order to fit together. bror didn't pay attention to that and instead he mixed them randomly. the reslut was, that they didn't fit together. so, they looked UGLY to me (i am not used to the tiles). they furthermore didn't fit to illarion as they were ment to be some kind of photorealistic -- in contrary to the rest of illarion (they were made by ghorkan, who left illarion at a very early stage).

anyway, i CANNOT change *anything* for the next 1-3 weeks, sorry (i'll go skiing). maybe someone else wants to create new tiles, it's simple to change them now.

I would like to do some tiles, just say what tiles you want and how they shall look approximately.

Ich würde gerne einige Tiles(Bodenfelder) machen, sagt mir einfach was gebraucht wird und wie es in etwa aussehen soll.

Uhh... I agree the grass reminds of of 'fisher price', and the old interface color was alot better for seeing things. Imagine my surprise when I showed up without being able to see my pants

The grass tranisition to sand or "beach" tiles of the old graphics are still there and sticking out like thumb sore at the edges of the desert. Then again they might as well be the best graphic tiles out there.
Also, the new "rock" floor tiles look like the grey "roof" tiles, or a patch of grey slush. The old tile that looked like "a bunch of rocks" looks more like rocks and doesn't look so obviously "squared" like all the other floor tiles now that don't fit with each other.

In principle, I suppose the new graphics were supposed to make EACH type of floor tile look better matched without "lines" or "squares" when connected with itself in a larger area, but each type of floor tile doesn't fit well with the OTHER surrounding floor tiles making everything look even MORE "squared" now.

I think the graphics took a step towards tibia graphics, especially the cobblestone road graphics. I think it would look better if you just took the old graphics and adapted them. But I certainly do like the pine trees :)

I think that Shi's mod makes more of a difference, although the server crashed before I got to test them.

There is a difference, albeit a slight one. In my opinion some graphics for illarion have taken a turn for the worse. The hedges look like they have fairy dust on them, the grass looks a bit to cartoonish...and I the forestground...looks like golf course matting with highlights. I am not saying that all of the changes have been for the worse. Some like the new dress and dwarven axe are great additions, but others...need some changing!

Yeah, I unzipped them to the Illarion folder...

Did it make the tiles darker, or something?

Is it possible for anyone to make a mod where it changed all the tiles back to the old ones?

Just a thought,

the tiles are great!! (not martins mod) They look so colorful, everything is so bright, it amkes me happy, the old ones were dark and ugly, these are colorful, everything looks great, and the water is better now too, walking down to the water shrines looks great! The only tiles i dont like are the rock tiles... but everything else is great, i think the new client is alot better than teh old one in tiles. i love it

Im definatley with you on that one mate. The old style tiles were realy good, all they needed we just some modification. But the style of them (original) made the look of the game what is was.

Now it looks very...taky and like it was rushed on MS Paint. No its worse than taky..just look at it. I mean how can you honestly say or even think that this new set of tiles is any good. What in hell made who ever replace them. Whos good judgment was it to think..yeh these nice looking tiles we got....lets change them and use these which are ghastly. All the old ones neede was a little modification to make them blend better. They were realy good. I cant say what I realy think fo these new ones but Im sure you know. Did the graphics person do any ...graphics before hand?

If somethings good why change it?

The game looks now like an alpha or worse...where as before it looked like a beta.

If someone wants to give me the old set of tiles I will modify them to make them work better.
