[RECONSIDER]Follow

Post by Lianis »

The one thing that I have really wanted ever since joining this game was a 'follow' command. So that you can right-click on another player (or even NPCs, but I don't care about that really) and choose 'follow' and then you (surprise surprise) follow them wherever they go. This would be soooo useful for cross-map treks, especially now that rain/fog/grass/trees reduces visibility (and reduces it differently for different people), not to mention how hard it can get to see anything at night.

I've thought about this, but what when chasing someone? just right click and seat back, while that one is trying his best to hide and get rid of you? ;)

Sounds a bit runescapey. I bet people'll be like "I'll pay you a silver and you walk to the lighthouse", then click follow and walk off for a while.

Marius has a point there.

Another solution for the confusion in fog etc would be the possibility to really hear from where someone speaks or shouts, indicated by an arrow pointing in that direction or something.

Or maybe the auto-following would stop if there is a certain distance between the two chars, like 8 boxes or more, or something like that.

There are drawbacks to every potential change to the client. however, I really do think this one has more positive than negative effects. And frankly, this is just about the only such game I've played (and I've played a lot) that didn't have some kind of follow command. Some have a 'time limit' of sorts, some require that you remain 'unidle' (such as moving your mouse around), some require that the person being followed 'accepts' the request to follow, some require that the person being followed stops every few minutes to let the followers catch up (followers are automatically slower than normal players, thus allowing you to outrun a 'follower') and various other such systems, but all have some way of following another person.

Lianis has a good point here: Other games have good developers, too. And those have good ideas that can be adapted to Illarion. However, I didn't fail to notice a certain tendency in responses to proposals:

Player A: I want a [whatever] system.
Player B: This sucks, because [way player B would implement it] is a drawback.
Player C: Oh, no, not that feature, it is like [crappy game]

 Refer to the thief system. So, a good proposal does not just include the basic idea, but details.

Now on topic: I'd appreciate a follow function, a time limit or slowing down the follower is mandatory. This would require some server changes, though.

What I'd also appreciate: A true auto walk function. Like, one can middle-click on the auto map and the char walks there automatically. Please don't come up with "this destroys RP"-kind of arguments, as Lianis stated, other games have similar features and I doubt the RP suffers from gameplay enhancing features.

Yeah, I wait for that, too! It's good to have the double-click-walk back, but a walking-function via Minimap would be cool (wasn't it possible in 0.4?)!

A autowalk does over the screen does not work because the client does not know what is over the borders of the screen. So it can't search a way.

The old client had no way search engine. So he was able to walk where ever he wanted to, but leaded the most times into something unpassable.

Server sided solution? I mean, the server knows exactly what is beyond that border the client's vision cannot pass.

Of course does a true auto walk function not work currently, otherwise we'd have it already, no?

I really want the autowalk back, but @ that last sentence: Most other games don't have rp ;)

rofl. Good joke. Do you know how long in takes to perform a way search calculation over the whole bloody map?

And now imagin 20 characters do this. The server won't run that smooth then ;)
