Language Teachers

Post by Ku 'Agor »

Apparently, a Linguistic teacher existed when I played back in 2006.

Can another character be selected to deploy the services that were? This was an incredible opportunity, but apparently to me this no only is existent or possible.

The language teacher was somehow bugged, can't tell you the details.

But I am not that sure if it is favourable if everybody can talk and understand every language. Could be a nice thing, though. A long term goal for characters, but nothing accomplishable in some hours of gameplay.

Apparently Taeryon Silverlight teaches languages.
Skaalib knows dwarvish, he learned from Tserian.

Taeryon Silverlight got his books from Tserian Llewenar.

Since Tserian Llewenar became inactive. Taeryon is out of order too.

So are there any plans to get another language teacher?

I'd find it interesting if books were dropped by monsters or sold by GMs or NPCs for incredibly high prices.

As far as I know language books, like the Ancient Book, take several days to get decent with because there is a timer from when you read a book and when you can read the next page.

I don't like the idea of other races learning the other language anyway in a way like they did with that language teacher. To many learned languages of other races. That distroys the racial roleplay in my opinion. From my side there will be no more support for such a teacher.[/quote]

So our powergamers are the only ones who get the other languages? Without any roleplay? Forget it.

What if we could only learn one or two other languages?

I think you should technically learn as many languages as you want. The only thing is I don't think you should be able to PG it and have mastered at least one in a year other than common and the native language. It doesn't make sence and it is almost impossible to master a language in a year. There are people my age who can't even master their native language. Sure Illa shouldn't completely match real life. Though I don't think a language should have the possibly be mastered in a year.

Yeah, but this is a game still.. No-one becomes a mastersmith in less than several decades. I don't see why we should apply different logic to languages than smithing..

I dont know... it is really rare for a person to be tri lingual. I think 2 extra languages should be max

and this would make 4 languages known....

I don't think it is rare if you live in Europe. After all, you are surrounded by many different countries with many different languages. If you have all these different languages around you, there is no reason you can't pick up at least a few words from them.

Plus many words from other languages have entered the English language, or people will use words from other languges. Just think of all the different words from other languages that have been made to fit into English.

Basically I'm saying there is no reason that more than one language can be learned. Though I agree, not all should be possible to be mastered.

How about restricting the amount of languages you can learn to your int score? With intelligence 10 you are able to learn 2 languages additional to your mother language. so "Racelanguage/Common/1 extra language". Every two int points someone may learn one extra language. means an intelligence 20 elf could speak up to 7 languages. 6 additional to his mother language. if we take intelligence 20 as an intelligence fitting a genius then this is a right amount. most real life genius are able to learn and speak 7 languages, or even more, in their lifetime.

Sounds somewhat alright, at least in my opinion. However, EVERYONE should be allowed to learn at least one language in addition to the two. That's simply because it's not ONLY intelligence that counts when learning new languages.

Maybe lower intelligence then 10 allows you to learn 1 additional language to the starting two, but as lower your int as less high you can skill the language. means with intelligence 5 you could learn elfish, but not higher then 50 or 40 %

Hmm..learning languages is not really about intelligence, anyone in RL who has a regular IQ can learn 6 languages easily, as long as he studies them as much as he needs to. Its about making efforts to learn something, intelligence does help but it isnt the main aspect about learning things such as languages. I think there should be a technical way to learn languages, maybe book and such, but not the way it works now.

Right now if you get a book you become good at the language after 2 or 3 days, if we are looking realistically it isnt that great. I would suggest that books of languages can be bought (either by NPCs or players) and anyone is able to learn as many languages as he/she wants. However, this would be a very long process, maybe something similar to the current system where you need to click 4 pages, some hours separating each, but instead of being 4 pages it could be 100 or so, not more than once each day. Doing this would take a characters more than one IG year to get good at a certain language and would be easy to accomplish as far as I know, since it is similar to the current system. Maybe intelligence can affect learning speed as well a little, though I am unsure if it technically possibly with that sort of learning.
