Magic.

last you spoke to a teacher (myself) all you wanted was to learn magic resistance. and you were told that Athian teaches all the ways of his caste.
plus i didn't plan to powergame you a skill by blowing you up for an hour everyday. as to your secondary character maybe he should ask other teachers more suited to himself

However, now that all the magic teachers are gone, the people who tried to apply, but got rejected, now have to wait ages for them to open up again.
Also, there are no "Evil" teachers at the moment, so "evil" mages have quite a hard time getting teachers without acting all good.
And by evil, I mean EVIL. Not Neutral Evil. EVIL.

the teachers aren't gone, there full maybe but still there. more over you don't need an EVIL EVIL teacher to learn as an evil teacher. you just need a teacher who doesn't give a danm what you do so long as you learn your lessons and show him respect. that would be a nuetral teacher, and thats more then enough.

Again, you are illinformed. I actually placed my second character out of contention because I thought it would be unfair were she to get a place over anither char, whose PO plays only that character. And the last time I spoke to a teacher was saturday evening when she was in a trial lesson with Lady Meryadeles.Athian wrote:last you spoke to a teacher (myself) all you wanted was to learn magic resistance. and you were told that Athian teaches all the ways of his caste.

And then I ask, what is wrong with asking to learn magic resistance? After all, how does one train a magic skill? By casting over and over again...that does not mean that rp cannot accompany it.

okay fine. if you want to do it. then sure. but i'll just have to occasionally kill you with magic, i mean being pounded with flames and ice will do that to you. maybe several times in a row, who knows. thats like asking me to throw granades in your face so you can get used to impacts.
but hey if your willing to let yourself get pk'ed for skilling purposes i'll sign you on right now

You're being ridiculous now. Does Athian have any magic resistance skill? Or does anyone at all infact? Or is it one of those 'forbidden' skills, that is there, but noone can use it? That would be ludicrous. Then why have it as a skill at all?
Or can we not fight now, because you might get killed whilst fighting?

sotp thinking just kills and start thinking rp,
point one: no mage has any reason to teach someone one skill like that ever.
point two: there is no equipment that you can use to block magic. in all honesty after a few fireball people should be serverly burnt. of course magic resistance pger want to play it off like nothing happened.
if you want the skill so badly go fight mage monsters. but the truth is it's not the skill your after, it's the safety of getting the skill without having to die. sorry boyo, not going to happen.

Point one: Correction, your mage has no reason to teach someone one skill like that ever; you cannot speak for others. If all other mage characters agree with you, then I stand corrected.Athian wrote:sotp thinking just kills and start thinking rp,

Point two: So you are saying it is a redundant skill? Or are you saying mages can learn it, despite the fact they dont have any equipment to block magic, but fighters cannot learn it?....
Thirdly, apparently you cannot gain this skill from NPC monsters, and why would I want the skill not having to die, but not want the skill?....
And lastly logic tells me that anyone with attributes above the 30 limit; and so can learn any other magic skill, could logically learn magic resistance. And you say it is powergaming, but how much time have some mages spent casting spells at nothing, how much time have some fighters spent killing skeletons. And lastly, Arien doesn't seem to think it is powergaming. http://illarion.org/community/forums/vi ... hp?t=20770 But, whatever, maybe you are right, I don't even really care anymore, so you win; none of my chars will ever learn magic resistance. I will say no more now.

That is really quite a stupid question; without balanced, working skills, Illarion ceases to have any technical aspect to it. Why not play some other game with no skills at all?Arkadia Misella wrote:Why are we so sorried about skill levels all of a sudden....oh, sorry, nevermind, I forgot this was illarion.

To tidy up an old prejudice :
On the teachers meeting (where OOC rules for teaching were set) we started a poll about the rough alignments of our teachers. Result(rounded) :
~40% - evil/selfish/dont give a dammn if the price is right
~53% - neutral / dont give a damn
~7% - selfish but good-aligned (and still too violent/agressive to be really called "good")
So much for that.
The only thing where no mage teacher accepts "bad" apprentices is : RP quality.

I will make a comparison with my reality.
Nowadays, Medicine became something (well in Canada for sure) everyone is talking about. Med school is the hardest program to get into. But why? Prestige my friends. In comparison with Illarion magical system, I would say it is the same thing. Isn't just a challenge? Of course it takes a huge amount of time, but the outcome is great also. Imagine now, make this system for everyone. A lot of mage characters are respected, well known and honored because they are part of something they had to work for.
What I suggest is:
Make a thing neutral between a pure magician and a warrior. Like a battle mage. These characters would be able to cast spells and fight at the same time, but only pure magicians would have access to the highest knowledge. It keeps the elitist system and it lets other people use magic too.

I think magic should be as common as people want it to be. Let there be those who learn from teachers, let there be those who learn from guardians, and let those who learn by a gm character......It should be accessable to anyone who has the ability to gather it. If someone wants to pay someone to teach them the rune; fine. IF someone is nice enough to teach someone for free; fine. If someone is willing to go on a quest to summon the guardians with the proper staffs and then give them the proper item; COOL!
Magic should be available to anyone who is willing to persue it. Not to mention that your still gonna have to go through the process of picking the right attributes and then train it.
A Mage-Fighter should be able to max out his fighting skills and his mage skills, wanna know why? Becouse he put in the f-ing time to do it and becouse he sacrificed his attribute configuration to be able to be effective as one.
((NOTE: I do think that you should AT LEAST be able to speak ancient pretty fluently before you can even attempt to go after runes.))

Whats wrong with more mages then warriors? IF that happens perhaps we could have more intresting governments (magocracy) It doesnt matter if there are more mages then warriors, it still allows rp right? You should be able to be whatever you want, its all up to the ammount of time your willing to put into your character.
There are orcs, goblins, fairies, elves, and all other non-humans; not to mention active gods liches, crazy undead and monsters....I mean..This is a high magic world when it comes to npcs and the world itself, whats wrong with the pcs being ALLOWED to join the high magic setting?
