New player treatment
I must say that I am appalled by some of the treatment new players get whilst ingame. I am not going to name names or anything, but to give one (very vague) example. A new player is trying unsuccessfully to perform a function. He is told how to do it by a player, but still can't get it. He is then told to just forget it by another player. He then says 'I just want to have fun and rp' (alright, not in brackets) and then the group proceed to mock him by being sarcastic and also saying to cloud him.
(notice no logs posted, almighty mod!!)
Attitudes like this have to change. It is no wonder that so many new players are scared off, with all these negative elitist attitudes around. Just show a little respect to the new player; just because they are a noob, it doesn't mean insensitive comments don't hurt their feeling.

There is something between people who want to learn and people who simply don't listen, I just had a nice newb intro with trystran an new player and me, she learned very quick and really tried to listen to us, but this Guy in the tavern a) didn't stopped after atleast 5 minutes of spammng and b) didn't listen to the advices of us, sorry skaalib but after five minutes and several advices how to do it and he still doesn't listen, I don't have any mercy left anymore, we have a very good handbook, there he could have found the solution and when not there, then in the forums with a search.

Sure, like you would know me anyway, but indeed i was there and you werent and after 5 minutes of several "L lizard" "I Lizard" or "i lizard" just don't care anymore about him, sorry but it simply interrupts the ongoing rp when you see it and the people talking ooc the whole time and i didn't make any decisions, I didn't killed him and he was, aslong as I remember, friendly enough to leave anyway, I know we all where newbs once, still would say my Rp isn't great anyway, but there is something between listening to players and willing to follow their "commands" and simply not listening to them and going on their nervs.

Back in the good old days, some players *waited* in the library for newbies logging in, offering their help, showing them the town and introducing them to the most important commands (!l is quite unimportant). Those players did not feel disturbed in their RP but were glad to help.
Maybe some of this spirit has survived... Anyway, the problem is well known and I guess that is one of the reasons why the staff creates a newbie island (at least I was told so). I hope that the one or the other player volunteers to help newbies during their first hour on this island.

!l is important when he starts making up text for lizard speak and then translating it. I gave him the command and then told him a few times it was an L, lower case L, and not a capital i. Didn't work, so I told him to go read the manual. I try to be as nice as I can to noobs. Kind of failed today I guess.

Sorry, but as I said, a few minutes ago we(Trys and myself) helped a newb, but as I also said there is a very great differenc between listening newbs and noobs who just don't want to learn it, normally not even reading the handbook.
Where you there..yes...no.. I guess no hu? Well then please keep your mouth shut and let the people talk, who actually were there and can say something about it instead of talking about other things you saw /read and if you where there, why didn't you go up and tlaked to him then?...I know ya and I know what I'm talking about.

I tried to make it unspecific for this very same reason. I was not really refering to just this one example, just so it would remain a discussion amongst all.Pellandria wrote:Where you there..yes...no.. I guess no hu? And to me, anyone who says, 'Look, I just want to have fun and rp' deserves some effort no?

Re: New player treatment
That's really good, but next time I want to have them and/or the names of the involved players by pm.Skaalib Drurr wrote: (notice no logs posted, almighty mod!!)
I don't wont to blame them, I only want to know what has happened and how we could perhaps make it better next time.
I can't be ingame 24/7 and I (and the newbs) need the help of all of you.
I think about my beginning, never played a rp before and cack-handed with the handling. But I had the great luck to encounter a player who had lots of patience and helped me again and again. I'm still thankful for meeting him. Perhaps he was the foundation that my love to Illa lasts for nearly six years now.
Notice there were more female players when Aris was about?Fooser wrote:Aristeaus is known to hit on the new ladies of the island, and that usually scares them offAristeaus wrote:Id never roleplayed before and met Athian.
And look what happened.....
All they have to look foward to these days is Edward Cromwell,, ye'gads its going to turn into a isle of sausage people.
Re: New player treatment
difference is there are newbies both those easy and hard to work with. then there are people who are simply new to Illar. those players coming from games like runescape and Tibia, who make no attempt to learn this game at all and simply run around ruining everyones day.Arien Edhel wrote: I think about my beginning, never played a rp before and cack-handed with the handling. id say after a good solid while of attempting to explain a simple function to someone. telling them to go read the manual isn't rude at all, it's common sense. and if they are particularly rude, don't listen at all, or keep talking ooc while you stand there explaining actually how to speak in ooc (you see this alot with people coming from MMO that don't have any rp atmosphere) then maybe just maybe it's not a problem with them being a newbie but more a problem with them not being suited to this kind of game.
alot of times when people make these 'be nice to newbs' topics they're the person sitting to the side, watching and doing nothing themselves. then they come say how much they dislike how others treat new people, not mentioning that they didn't exactly get up and offer there assistance. but generally i try to keep in mind that for every newbie player that brings good rp and characterization to Illar, there are about a dozen who are just looking for a hack n slash.

Sentances that are 10 lines long are so much fun to translate. Expecially when you have no idea what is going on till the last word. Grant, don't they make you learn a second language at your school?
I think much of the time it depends on the setting, the new player, and how the other players feel at the time. It would be helpful if they read the manual, but some don't. Some that don't learn quickly as to what they need to do, others just go "DIE! NOOB!" and get pwned.
Some days you just don't have the patience to deal with a noob or even a newbie. Show them the basics and send them on their way. That is all you really can do. If someone doesn't want to learn, they won't.
