stairs / ladder

Can someone give me a hint how to use a stairs or a ladder ?
I tried around half an hour but didn't get it.....

Move your character onto the ladder.

i try to imagine how someone can use up 30 minutes to figure out how a ladder works...i mean...you just have to step on it o_O. what has he done all the 30 minutes? standing infront of it and shouting "Beam me up"?
