Trouble buying hatchet

today i started my new gnome and didnt have a hatchet to chop wood with so i went to sam but to my suprise when i got there he would not sell me an axe or any tools at all. when i sadi "buy hatchet" he sold me a hat. and when i said "list your wares" he showed a list of of clothes but no tools at all.
I was wondering does sam still sell tools or is there a glitch in the game (because it works on my other charecters) or am i typing the wrong thing please help me.

Say "Beil" instead of hatchet, that works.
