Concerning the Magic System

Post by Korwin »

No, I'm not going to bash the current intelligence. I was just looking at the 'Developement' part of the site and I took a look at the magic section. Are all the spells already planned out? I'm sure most people have great ideas for spells. So if you're short on ideas, tell us.
I'm also a bit concerned about this age thing descirbed in characteristics and abilities. I'm sure playes who have been around awhile don't want their characters to age quicker than they would normally. I like the 1 year older for every year played myself.

right.... so basically, if you only played your character for three years, then your char would die at the age of 3...?

for roleplay reasons, time must go faster in Illarion. a few examples:

It takes about half a minute to craft a plate mail (unsuccesfull attempts counted), where as in RL it takes weeks or months.

Secondly. Farming.
It take five to ten minutes for grain and cabbages from sown, to ripe and flourish. RL that takes a season, about 2/3 of a year.

Furthermore, roleplay often deals with things happenening in the future, e.g. a mad lich is killing a continent, and will attack our town when finished. That would take years or at least months in rp time, and if your character was to age in RT, it would take that long in our time aswell. No one would have the patience required to RP such events anymore...

Alright I realise I'm babling and make no sense, so I'll stop now.

point is: I disagree fervently.

Yes I suppose you do have a point there Mishrack. After hearing your reasons I agree with you.

What is this?
So we are going to DIE someday?!
Nooo! I plan to live forever! You'll never get me!
But I have to disagree with few of your points, Misharck.

I believe that this is something to do with the actual sense of the game,
how many farmers you suggest that we'd have if person would have to wait for moths for their crops to grow?

You can never really fully compare Illarion and Real-Life with eachother, mainly because there is no fear of 'pain' and because people are at their best, only a few hours in a day online.
It takes about half a minute to craft a plate mail (unsuccesfull attempts counted), where as in RL it takes weeks or months.
This will hopefully change in the future, but not this drastically I suppose.
Perhaps crafting a platemail will require hours of real-life time (with the change of stop and continue later, of course)

I shall once again have to change my viewpoint. It would be quite difficult to have say 1 hour being 1 day. Simply because that would mean I have spent days speaking to certain people without food or water.

People often compare Illarion to RL, this in my opinion is wrong. Illarion is a Fantasy game therefore RL has very very few things to compare with. What people should be comparing Illarion to is 'realism'. I will explain what I mean more as some people fail to understand the difference between the two:

RL (Real Life) - Real life is our world, no elves, hobbits (etc). We are an 'advanced race' (compared to lifeforms on our planet as we do not know if there are aliens blah, blah, blah.), in Illarion we dont have electricity or sky scrapers, or satelite television etc. etc.

Realism - Effect of making something seem real. I.e. as if you were really there in illarion.

I hope this outlines my point, and sorry for losing track of what this post was origionally about, once again, my aplologies and thank you.

But my main point is, that you can't really say that 1 hour = 1 day
Since the people aren't there 24/7.
So..
You play two hours in day. Your character gets two days older.
And when you log in, you character has magically aged 22 days?
Since the world is still there regardless if your character is there or not.

Making it so that 'Character ages only when he is logged' doesn't solve anything, people would still die at the age of three, since no-one plays eight hours in a day, seven days a week, four weeks in a month, twelve months in a year.
