A question about Red Skeletons

I bumped into a red skeleton in the woods to the south, I didn't fancy my chances and so I hightailed it out of there. He gave chase but was nowhere near me and all of a sudden I was dead with no signs of an attack....
So how do they attack?

it was a mage. the mage npc can cast at you even if you are already far away. or it was an archer. they can do the same i think
