Some beginner questions
I'm sure I could find answers to these questions by browsing the forums even more than I already did, but I'm eager to get going, so any help is appreciated.
1. I learn skills I already have by just repeating the task, e.g. playing an instrument increases the corresponding bard skill? Differernt instruments require different skills, right?
2. I noticed I start with a quite limited number of skills and have read somewhere that I need a teacher to learn new ones. Where can I find teachers? Is there a list of NPC teachers or can any player teach me? How does that work?
3. I noticed there are not too many players online at a time. Is there a place where I have a good chance of finding someone to RP with or are those players scattered across the map?
That's all I can think of for now. Something that bugs me though: when I first found this game, stupid me actually thought it was solely german, so I chose a german sounding name and only started reading forums when I waited for activation or confirmation or whatever you call it. Will the name keep non-germans from interacting? That would be a shame actually...
Thanks for any answers, I really look forward to getting into the game and meeting all of you.

1) Not sure
2) The only teachers are language teachers.. and only one is working right now... so you'll have to learn them on your own
3) Most people will be in Trollsbane, around Eliza's shop or near the inn...
Added-> Both methods would work SHIFT click OR the context menu.. i think

Some Germans speak english, and they interact with english speakers.. so it shouldn't be a problemWill the name keep non-germans from interacting? That would be a shame actually..

Thanks a lot. Now, just to clarify: I can learn skills I didn't get in the beginning by doing something? I was sure that a basic skill that a char doesn't have cannot be gained by just doing something, but must be tought... does that mean that a warrior can just go into the woods, chop down a few trees and gain a lumberjack skill he didn't have before?
All skills can be used and learnt from an untrained stage EXCEPT language skills.
SO basically if you try smithing, you'll learn smithing, and if you chop trees you'll learn lumberjacking.
You won't learn different languages unless you already have some skill in it, which is why the teacher comes in.
Edit-> Of course you are welcome to look for a character who's expert in it and ask him to teach you the basics (and he'll RP teaching you the basics, but there isn't anything in the programmed system)

I see. Ok, now for a final and probably stupid question: I read about skill levels being displayed in a certain colour to indicate... well, level. However, I have never seen that neither ingame nor on the char page. I'm probably missing something (again). Where can I view information about my char ingame?

Yes. It's my first char here (obviously) and I intend to use it to learn about the game world and characters, so I will avoid fighting and be looking for stories to tell and songs to sing to enhance my repertoire.
I think I read somewhere that you are playing a bard character, too, so I hope we meet ingame soon.

Yes, he's a bard character. My first character too actually.
As far as poems and songs go I am trying to write my own stuff. I've only written one thing so far. You can see it in the "Fluffy Sheep Tavern- The Love of Wine and Poetry" post in the RP forum.
For inspiration I would look to the moonsilver site that has all the background for the game. Once you start learning about the gods and the history you can generally take the themes and write some poetry.

Hope that helps some.

The only problem are special vocabulary, but that isn't a big problem.
So you can speak to the most german in the game.

I guess I didn't make my point clear enough. I had the impression that the majority of players would be german (like me) so I chose a german sounding name in total disregard of the fact that this community is quite international. After reading all your replies and other threads I'm confident that won't be a problem.
I've seen other games with a strong german community and I've seen those communities fail due to the fact that the german majority wasn't too tolerant when it came to language issues. I'm glad this doesn't seem to be true here in Illarion.
