Question about this english/german thing...

Post by Alvarez »

I've just found this game and I'm quite interested in it, especially in it's roleplay focuses. I've also found the background very interesting although I've still much to read, of course. But so far, so good.

Still haven't runned the client and joined the game, actually. And that because I'd like to know something before everything (so I wouldn't waste my time and patience). Is the german language used so much as it appears by the forum? I mean, I expect the game to be in english, of course. But I wanna know about the community habits, do you communicate a lot in german? Or you try to keep things in english? Are there many players who speak only german - or terrible bad english? Will I miss interesting discussions about the game for not understanding german?

Thank you for your understanding.

This is a multi-lingual community. Most of the german players speak a great deal of english. You won't miss out as an english only speaking player all that much because the german speaking population is more than wonderful at catering to those of us who can't understand a lick of German. The multi-lingual factor isn't a barrier, it only serves to make the game more interesting.

And there are several of us english speakers willing to learn German. I have never had a problem with either language. There are few occasions where you will find someone who can't speak english, but at the same time, it is respectful to at least try to learn German if you can. It enhances your experience and you won't feel 'left out' of some of the German stuff.

If we start speaking Chinese though, I'd be in trouble!

Really, its not that hard to keep a list of German words, learn some basic conjugation, and be trading with German speaking people in no time. Even with seriously bad grammar its still not that hard.

I don't know any German. I was concerned about this myself when I first started. I had actually downloaded a similar game right before it and it promised to be in English but not even the game itself was in English (even when the whole website was).

Anyways, I have not had any language barrier problems. Most of the German people seem to speak a good deal of English (at least in my experience).

Oh, and welcome to Illarion! I hope you have a good time. If you have any other questions feel free to ask them here in the forum, I am sure someone will be nice enough to assist you in getting started.

Time for a word of a german:

As said this game is multilangual.. We call english "the new language/new tongue and german the old language/old tongue.

As far as i know the game startet in german.

The most of us handle it this way. We normally speak german if we are RPing in a group with germans, but if just one english-only player comes by, we mostly flip directly into english. I can tell you, my english is gettin better, even if my rp is smoetimes kinda blocked because i am missing some of the vocalabuary, i am still trying my best to rp my char.
I still do many langual mistakes, but the other players are helping me. SOmetimes if i really don't no the translation of an german word, but its really important for the rp, i ask somebody (special) for the translation.
But i do not think that our different language skills takes any bad influence to the game...

so do not worry

by the way, i am very impressed that your collecting informations about the backround and the way we handle things, for all newcomers, take an example..

last but not least: Welcome to Illarion, i'm looking forward to RP with you

I can only add my confirmation to what's been said already.

There is a large German-speaking community in this game; as is to be expected, since that's where it started. However, they are almost all very accomodating to us poor, idiotic single-language players. ;) *Most* of them know at least enough English to accomplish at least basic RP with us English-only players. The rest simply say 'I don't speak English' or whatever, and you do find someone who can'. ;)

Honestly, you won't miss out on much really, there is plenty of English RP.

Upon coming to this game, I was absolutely delighted to find out it has German-speaking players and a German interface. Why? I'm trying to learn German as my third language! Talk about coincidence.

But I'm very glad that the Germans around know English too. You're all so accommodating. ^^

 excuse my words Alvarez, but this really makes me mad (to express my feelings in a quite polite and acceptable way).

At least the German players - if not perfectly though - TRY to rp in English. I know, German is really difficult to learn and I don't expect anyone to do so. But I learned and each day learn more English while playing, maybe you should give it a try with German ?!
My English is not perfect, not at all, and I do not mind being corrected ... because this is the only way to learn

Okay all I know is Grube. Hello. Dont worry there are plenty of people who speak english. I dont know German and I have fun playing. As far as I know , I only met only one person that only speaks German. But not a problem. In game translation. There was this other guy who translated in english. Dont worry you wont miss out on anything. The entire game is english and most play in english. Well, one thing.. you need to know German to join the knighthood or whatever but dont worry there plenty of other jobs. Let me stress, Plenty.
Good luck!
