Name and Server problems...

Post by Brendan Mason »

Ever since the server came back I've forgotten all of the names I used to know, how can I recover them and start remembering names again :?:

Well, look around for a names.dat in your illarion directory. It might be under your character name. That is where the names are stored, and if you lost that, nothing can be done unfortunately.

I dont' think anyone else lost their names, so it's probably somethign with your machine.

i ahve always ahd that problem. but what is supposed to happen is that after they intro themselves, you both get off, back on, it should still show there names? withought re-intoing? not jsut the number?
that si what it sounds like to me, and if so, i have always ahd the problem.

What you are talking about, Drogla, has been reported many times, and the fix for that right now is to delete or rename your character folder under your Illarion directory on your computer.

This is sometimes (usually?) a bug on windows 2000 machines.

this isn't a bug, it's a feature. a randomizer distributes morbus alzheimer among newly created characters (with a probability of 0,5%, your character is affected by it). :)
to be serious: it might happen that you forget names when you don't log out properly. (logging out=pressing <esc>). if this still happens, and i suppose that it still happens, there's some real problem. try generating a new character, get one or two names, log out and search for the names.dat, open it with a hex-editor (a usual text-editor will probably do it as well). what you should see is a list of names with some kind of "spam" between it. if that is the case, i'm entirely confused. if not, then i'd call it "major bug of the client".

if i remember right you must have the names.dat in the mainfolder not in the sub of the names.

everywhere was that problem too but you must search it

Okay.. you have the names.dat file in your main Illarion folder, that is good.

But, do you also have a folder under the Illarion main folder the same name as your character? If so, that is your problem. For some reason Windows 2000 has a problem somewhere. Either rename or delete the folder name under you Illarion folder with the same name as your character. That way when the client can't see your character folder it will use the correct names.dat file.

I had this problem too, and it´s really annoying when you play more than one character. I solved the problem for me that way, that I use different Illarion clients for each character i play, so the names.dat won´t get mixed and Cuderon knews people he never met before.
I just copied the Cuderon names.dat from my old client´s subfolder in my new client folder called "Cuderon-Illarion" and so I did with my other Chars. With shortcuts on your desktop named that way it is even not that uncomfortable. Maybe it´s a little bit unprofessional, but it works fine :P

You must distinguish two things here:

Brendan Mason is talking about a bug, that arose with the patch, sirra is talking about some problems, that she had (I suppose so) always.
Brendan Mason has perhaps not installed the patch, but redownloaded and installed the whole client. If you did so, install it to the same directory or copy the character subdirectories (folders) from the old place to the new.
Sirra should wait for a new client version, when the bug is supposed to be fixed.
