OOC
I'd like to remind everyone that the OOC discussions, conversations, and comments should be kept to bare minimum or non-existant. Those are the rules. When I walked into the shop just now there were maybe 6 or 7 people speaking in OOC without whispering, and while this may sound like whining to you I just wanted to point out that there is a time and place for OOC discussions and it isn't IG. Please be respectful of the environment we're all trying to create and cut it out, or at least whisper. Thanks.

Just to play devil's advocate, *sometimes*, especially when dealing with a large grup trying to sort something out, it is unavoidable to speak OOC in-game, without whispering (as whisper can only travel so many squares).
*However*. If such a situation arises, it should be taken somewhere where it isn't likely to bother many people's RP, say, two screens away from the town wall, at least. It *certainly* shouldn't take place in the shop, whish is one of the main IG gathering-spots!

if i ooc i whisper and i only really ooc when:
some new guy does the wrong functions.
i get asked something in ooc.
something really needs to be discussed at that time.
people think wdf why didnt he respond for the past 2 mins.
i do not whisper when there is agroup of us and no one is near, but needs to hear it.

Frankly, I tend to ignore this OOC rule, as it is almost always portrayed by staff members as something more of a suggestion than anything else. I also feel that it should be everyone's right to do so as much as necessary, as long as they are able to exhibit restraint to some degree. I have had some hilarious conversations while OOC with groups of people in the middle of town in the past. It is everyone's community and while the game is designed for RP, plenty of that happens as is, whether or not its a quest or just character interactions (which to me are far more important than 'questing'). Everyone should have the right to speak OOC as much as necessary/wanted as long as the proper tags are attached and as long as it isn't being shouted everywhere.

Exactly why I feel we should not be reprimanded for OOC conversations. We are very considerate about it 95% of the time, so why people are jumping on our asses about it, I really have no idea. I guess 'vast majority' isn't good enough to some.Retlak wrote:The thing is, people do not just walk into a shop filled with people roleplaying and suddenly shout ooc everywhere.
I can't speak for anyone else, but as far as I go...
The reason I get onto people about OOC conversation in 'populated' areas, is because if nothing is said, people will get more and more lax about it, until you end up with a Tibia or Everquest like mishmash of IC and OOC, to the point where you can't tell the one from the other.
Yes, the tags are the really important things. But the less OOC there is, the better for the RP environment of the game.
As I said, there are times when OOC is unavoidable, even appropriate. But wholesale use of it in highly public areas will detract from the game.

Neither Tibia nor Everquest have any actual rules about Roleplaying. Well, I'm sure EQ has "rules", but not in the same manner, nor is the game community of EQ consistently reaching out specifically to roleplayers, rather than people who can pay a monthly subscription fee. So, really, thanks to our application system, we are almost guaranteed roleplayers who are here to roleplay.
Cain... I quite agree.
My point is along the lines of the 'give an inch they take a mile' theory.
The more lax we let things get, the more lax they will get, and then things will be pushed to be more lax in the next area, and so on.
And it has long been clear that whenever possible, OOC should be kept to whisper. To say 'but I've had so many fun OOC convos, quit complaining!' is not a justified argument. Yes, you can have lots of fun OOC. But that isn't the point of this game. If you want to have an OOC conversation, get a messenger service like AIM or MSN and have it there.
I'm usually pretty upset about how clique-ish and puritan some of the people here get. But this is one thing that I do not think should be compromised on.
At all.

I agree with NirAntae and likeminded individuals. I'm not even in the game yet (awaiting name approval at time of writing), but from the very first page that is what this game was promoted as. I think this rule is the most important as this is what creates the game world and promotes a stronger roleplaying community.
Would it hurt to try and rephrase modern terms into medieval sounding phrases the sending of the dove or the leave a parchment with your scribble under the big rock outside my door and I'll respond later terms are or seemed to me pretty standard.
To not actually bother role playing defeats the purpose of the setting doesn't it and dilutes the new members attitude to the rule, which until they get in the game is announced as hard and fast etched in stone as "keep to bare minimum and ONLY if you MUST and ONLY in out of the way areas."
Tell me if I'm being unreasonable with this opinion?

Hello there my friend, when you get in game you shall see what we mean. People do not speak OOC as a rule ;] but on occasions they use (( Sentance )) to speak an OOC phrase. This is not a problem if they need help etc, but some people take it into the extreme, speaking OOC for no reason, which was the issue at hand. You wont see this happen often so fear not.
My fears are allayed kind stranger, the laws in these lands are strange but reasonable. I may even willingly pay taxes, but that is a different subject.Aristeaus wrote:Hello there my friend, when you get in game you shall see what we mean. OOC should really, really in "((...))" and even more whispered.
With this in my mind I am OOCing from time to time. I try to not send my text if a not involved character is in my "talking range" and I am RPing parallely (e.g. #me-commands).
But it is true it is real annoying if someone always and very often speak OOC without whispering (I think of one particular person...

I am somewhat new to this game. But I have just gotten into the swing of things and I find when I walk into an area and be bombarded with OOC Messages quite distrubing and hard to keep in character.
At first I didn't mind it as it was people asking and giving advice on how the game is played but recently I was in Trolls Bane and two people [I'm not going to name names] were having a OOC dissusion in normal speech.
Becuase I am a poor typer, poor at multi-tasking and still figuring out the game controls, I usually just whisper what I want to say to the other person and then add nothing else. [It's usually a plea for people to #i themselves to my character.] However I've been flamed by one person for doing it this way, again I'm not going to name names here.
For the record normal OOC speech is heard by everyone around you and it annoys the crap out of me when Im not part of an OOC disscussion to be bombarded with its messages, so I avoid doing it to others.
