Speaking of medival times, we can only speak about europe.
It is a term in history used for the time frame between the "classic" and the "modern time", about 1000 years long.
Starting with the falling roman empire until the beginning modern times with humanism and renessaince.
early medival time was from about 500 to 1000
high medival time was from about 1000 to 1200
late medival time was from about 1200 to 1450
(time frames differ lightly from book to book)
The term medival was used in modern times to mark the dark period between the high developed times of the classic period (greek, roman ...) and the "high" developed modern times.
The medival period was seen as a downfall of culture. So it is a term, that can only be used for european history. Other parts of the world have their own periods.
From this point of view, medival times didn't know gun powder or coffee or tea or other things which exists in different parts of the world at the same time because medival time was only in europe but not there.
If you use medival time as a background for Illarion you can only refer to the european period from 500- 1450.
But coming back on topic, the loaning of money is as old as there was a sort of currency.

Japheth was invented in the year 2039 by German scientists hired by Illarion residing in Ireland who wanted to create the perfect GM.
Here you can find a video of an early prototype of Japheth:

Banking during the time of the Knights of Malta (1530-1789) was mostly pawn shops.
People used to take their silver items, and expensive things to this bank (usually run by a rich merchant jew) and they'd get X coins, where X is less than the value of that item. Then you have 30 days or so to return it, with a little extra for the jew; otherwise you'd lose it. plain and simple.
Banks for depositing cash I do not agree existed during that time..

I find it hard to understand people at times.
This is a fantasy role playing game, fantasy being the word. If i wished to play the Medievil playing game or the Europe playing game i would do so.
The bank which they have set up IMO hurts no one, so sit back remember its a game. Did you realise that there were never dragons or beholders in Medievil times, or that strangely enough people diddnt buy books to teleport them selves to other places.
There is no point saying. OH! that would not have existed in that time, as long as you use common sense.

it is fine having a bank and all but it would be gradual for people to think of interest rates and Clerks (probably a french word but i dont know) i mean have the bank but it seems like the chars just woke up and said "i want to create a bank with 7% interests on small loans ect ect"
I think to start off with it should be that the bank will hold money for people fomr bandit attacks for example. then later on Fooser and the others will make the more modern ideas. This is the first time that's happend in Gobiath afterall or at least make a big RP thing that a banker has come from another isle with all these things to give to Gobiath. Then I would be happy with you doing it.
It is a good idea afterall but a gradual change or the banker from another isle will make it cool

Check the bible...pretty sure there is mention of 'moneylenders' in it. I'm sure they didnt do it for charity.Necrontyr_arising wrote:i want to create a bank with 7% interests on small loans
Interest might not have been called interest but it almost certainly existed in some form. "Pay your taxes now or it will cost you double in 10 days". Get the idea?
Percentages were also cetainly used but mostly expressed as 1 in something. As in the term 'decimation'....a term from roman times badly misused today. A legion which disgraced itself in battle was 'decimated' as a punishment and warning to others. 1 in 10 legionnaires was put to death. 10%.
Lastly....dammit this is a game. Its supposed to be fun. They want to have a bank. Great! If you dont like it, dont use it. now stop bithcing and have fun.

Brer has been planning this or another idea since he heard the news about his dead brother.Necrontyr_arising wrote:it is fine having a bank and all but it would be gradual for people to think of interest rates and Clerks (probably a french word but i dont know) i mean have the bank but it seems like the chars just woke up and said "i want to create a bank with 7% interests on small loans ect ect"

Jeremy is right, the old testament even says that a moneylender cannot charge another Jew interest on his loan. I forget the exact wording, but it is to that effect.

As a member of the staff, seeing this as a good thing that is helpful to the community, economy, and fun of the game, I use the bank with all of my PC's *and* NPC's. So it looks like the bank *will* be working.Faladron wrote:I still don't see how they will be able to let their money work so they can pay out that interrest rate, besides sewing tons of shoes or fighting 24/7.
The bank system is a nice idea and the sense of it and how to play it should not be discussed too much if the result could be, that the players with the idea get annoyed and give it up.
Molotov Coctail - It is only name for an item. Propably the developers did not get a better name for this item when it was implemented. So the work-title was overtaken... simple
Coffee - Very good idea, maybe we get it in future in matter of other drugs. Within the current system angerberries could be the right source for a drink like coffee...
Ceridern also has no fruits until now...
