A Leave of Absence
Quinasa and Irania met at the docks, ready for journey neither having told a soul about. Irania was just about jumping out of her skin with excitement but Quinasa kept looking behind her in obvious pain. She patted the parchment in her pocket knowing that when the time was right she would send a letter.
"I'm going to see mama and the baby and Darrah and you're coming with me, it'll be like forever ago!" Irania said in a happy singsong way.
"I'm going to have to sneak you in, Rae," Quin replied. "Once we step off the boat you can't be so... you."
"I know that Quinny. Cheer up or you'll put me in a sour mood."
They boarded a ship at the dock and settled in a room below decks. Irania grew bored fast as her sister lay in bed writing something long and uninteresting so she went up top and met the crew. Some of the men flashed her smiles and she always played along.
Back in their room one of Quinasa's feet dangled off the side of the bed and the other was in the air as she lay on her stomach, a scroll of parchment drying before her. A trip to see her father was just what she needed right now.

Irania moves to sit on the bed with her sister and leans over her shoulder, she sighs before speaking.
"Quinnie, I always get to nervous when I go back. It brings back bad memories sometimes to see Darrah, doesn't it?" She continues, "And it's dangerous for me. We're going to be alright, aren't we?" She leans away and rests back on her elbows, crossing her legs at the ankles.

The elfess lays her head on her arm, the finished parchment rolled up in the bedside drawer. She looks at her sister.
"Bad memories to see my father? I never thought about it. He's my dad. He has always been my dad through all the bad times and the good. He's always been there. Do you get sad when you see your mother?" Quin paused, Irania looked thoughtful. How to make her understand...
"Darrah isn't part of the bad memories, every pciture of him I have in my mind is full of hope and courage, love and strength. He is a pillar, Rae."
Irania still looked doubtful. "We won't be in danger will we?"
"I don't think so, the house isn't so close to the center of town. But I think they might have something planned, we probably won't stay there long."
Irania nodded with satisfaction.
"Isn't there a man around you are going to miss?" Quin tried lightening the mood.

The night fell lightly upon Gobaith, two figures sat beside a small burning fire, both silent. The first a human male, his look placing him in his late twenties, head bowed and deep blue eyes looking to the dancing flame.
The second, a humanoid with reptilian features. A permanent smile upon its lizard like jaw sat with a leaf which the creature continually attempted to shove up his Nostrils.
‘Foos’
The man raises his head slowly, eyes going to the lizardmans slanted pupils.
‘Quin, I think she hates me’
The lizard removed a finger from its nostril his watery eyes looking to the man, the affects of the leaf showing.
‘Quin hate nah, Wine. That’s all you need Aris’
A light smile crosses the man’s lips. A warmth coming to his eyes.
‘You could be right my friend, you could be right’
Getting to his feet, the cloak falling about him, its rich folds showing no sign of creases. Aristeaus places his hand to the lizards shoulder.
‘I should find her’
Fooser snorts once more, the remains of the leaf going to join the rest.
‘Yes, you should. And if wine doesn’t work run’
A rich laughter leaves the man’s lips as he walks from the firelight into the waiting darkness, in search of the one he had pledged his life to.

"Just think. The baby must be so big by now. We have a lot to catch up on." She smiles, trying to lighten her sisters mood.
"Yes. We do." She seems to brighten at the thought. Irania reaches into her bag and removes a leather book, lined with gray gems. "I think i'll read a bit." She lays on her stomach and flips the book open to a marked page.

After days of travel by boat, Irania and Quinasa arrive on Paralon. Quinasa looking forward to seeing her father once more and Irania looking rather suspicous trying to not look suspicious.
"It shouldn't take long to get home, Quin. Just a couple more days by foot." Irania puts a hand on her sisters shoulder as they walk from the dock.
"Yes, hopefully you won't be feeling too lazy to make it there quickly." Quinasa shoots her sister a smile. Although she looked excited her voice implied that she was still upset about something. She must really miss Arist...

Quinasa smiled at her sister with forced enthusiasm in her voice.
"You go on and set up camp somewhere off the road a ways. Just don't go too far I want to be able to find you," she told her sister. "I've just got a letter to send out."
Irania walked off the road and into the brush. Quin called after her, "And no fish!" She could hear her sister's giggle and as she disappeared from view. She sighed and looked toward the ship her keen elven eyesight sorting through the rigging and sails to find Keiko. She whistled and the small white dove came soaring from the topmost mast.
"Here Keiko. Sorry, it'll be a long flight but I need you to take this to Varshikar, find Aristeaus for me?" Keiko cocked her head and peered at the elfess with beady black eyes for a moment, then clutching the parchment took wing and disappeared against the clouds. Quinasa watched for a little bit, the ship was farther out to sea and her letter was farther. How long would it take before she got a reply? She turned toward the last place she saw Irania go and headed off in that direction. She was not too far off and Quin was not surprised to find fish sitting over the fire on a spit. She gagged at the odor and then sat rummaging through her pack. She pulled out several utencils, a pot and a bowl, and a nice large head of cabbage. She filled the pot from her waterskin and cut the cabbage with a large knife, dropping it in the water. Irania watched her in disust and Quin grinned as she set about making her soup.
"I told you no fish."

After eating Irania set down a blanket for herself and laid back.
"Hey, we might even get there tomarrow night...If we run and don't stop for a minute." Irania laughs at her own humour.
"Yes Rae, how your imagination does run off on it's own." Quinasa sets down a blanket for herself and mimics her sister, laying down herself. After that there was silence as Irania was already asleep.

Aristeaus raised his arm to the sky and the familiar dove landed upon his outstretched hand, with nimble fingers the lord of the north removed the letter from the doves leg and with a slight flick of his hand sent her back to her mistress.
Unfolding the small piece of parchment Aristeaus’s smile disappears to be replaced by a look of loss. Taking a quill from his pouch the man makes his way into his personal chambers, sitting within the familiar armchair he takes out three sheets of parchment and begins to write with careful strokes.

Caitlin looked to the letter in her hands. Line to line she read it. A second time. A third time. Before she put it away finally.
It made no sense writing him a reply though she wished it dearly. He was gone. Caitlin had this feeling that there always have been words between them, which never were spoken.
Slowly she sank back into the chair with a thoughtfull glint in her eyes as her gaze wandered out of the window which faces the west.
"We've gone through much", Caitlin whispered silently to herself, as if she would speak to him, or verbalizing what she would write into the letter. "Sometimes I still wish the old days in tavern back. Everything seemed so easy those days. We had our dreams, hopes and fears."
Her black eyes wandered back to the letter on the table.
"Most of our fears came true, while many dreams simply broke or have been forgotten. But the hope still remains in our hearts. We've been there for each other in times where no one else was. Sometimes I didn't see your for months.. and though, my friend, I knew you were there. I knew you were just one single word away. Closer as many other.
...
Follow your heart. It will tell you the right thing to do.
Follow your heart and it may lead you back one day.
For the old days in tavern."

A small figure runs to the shore as the small ship pulled out of the cove.
He stands watching as the ship is finally swallowed by the darkness. The final twinkle from the running lights dissappearing in the gloom.
"Damn. Now what are we supposed to do. That man has a habit of leaving without warning. Maybe he left Ath some instructions. Or at least a hint as to what he has been up to. Maybe Ath will find something in the Castle."
A small chuckle escapes into the darkness.
"But I doubt it. So. We just have to guess and do the best we can."
The figure turns from the water then pauses.
"Ambassador? Boss, I hope you dont come to regret that one."
The small figure takes a deep breath, straightens and squares his shoulders. He turns back towards the waters.
"Take care boss. May the Gods watch over you and give you safe passage. We will take care of the land till you return. Just dont stop away too long."
Jeremy turned back inland and jogged back to Varshikar.

After cleaning up camp upon awakening, Irania and Quinasa begins once more the walk home.
"How old is the baby now? Two?" Irania looks to her sister with a questioning expression.
"He'll be three soon actually." Quin replies with a smile.
"Then I guess he's not really a baby anymore!" They both giggle in growing excitement. Both of them are silent for a few moments.
"Now that the war is over they've moved back to the city, did I tell you that yet?"
"Rae, you really need to work on your memory." Quin chuckles. They continue on, chatting all the while.

How times change,,
A meeting arranged within the long abandoned coal mine, a kiss stolen within its gloomy depths.
And the Consequences and the joy which went with it.
A battle between the brothers, for a love they both sought, and a rift created between them as times grew on.
The love of a maiden who’s beauty was un-surpassed, and the nights spent together beneath the stars in each others arms.
How could our story get to this Quin..
A single tear rolled down the mans cheek, the charts before him untouched as his thoughts were elsewhere.
‘ My Lord ‘
Aristeaus looked up giving a slight nod to the man before him.
‘ There is land in sight ‘

The sun was shining brightly through the breaks in the forest canopy where Quinasa and Irania were sitting with their family on a red and white checkered blanket. The food spread out before them was almost gone, and a little boy with sandy brown hair and pointed ears was running circles around the four adults who watched him and chatted amongst themselves.
"Why did you not bring him?" Darrah asked Quinasa. She lifted her eyes to him trying hard to conceal the pain she was feeling.
"He has a city to run, father. And a castle to rebuild. His job is not easy," she replied. She watched her little brother as he ran behind her father giggling, a napkin still tucked into his shirt as a bib. Darrah just nodded, though Quin was sure more questions were coming to his mind every moment. "His birthday is next month. How will you celebrate?"
"Are we staying for the party?" Irania piped in. Her mother crawled off the blanket and caught the running boy in her arms as he came past. They both rolled onto the grass laughing as the woman tried unsuccessfully to clean his face. Irania was on her knees beside Quin, almost falling into her sister's lap. Quinasa ducked to the side.
"You don't need to be going back?" the tall elf asked. He was looking at Irania and Quinasa in turn.
"No!" Irania answered.
"Nothing pressing happening, Keiko knows where to find me. Besides, we can't miss all of his birthdays."
Darrah was obviously concerned for his daughter but he said nothing. He knew when not to pressure her. If she needed something, all she had to do was ask. "We'll spend it here then. The five of us." Irania got up and winked at her sister. She was obviously growing fidgety, they had been sitting in the clearing behind the cottage all afternoon. Quin watched Irania go into the house and then turned back as her father continued. "But I've got to be getting to work at the end of the season so it won't be a long holiday."
Quin smiled and watched as Darrah stood and went over to his wife, a stunningly beautiful-if older-version of her sister. She closed her eyes and calmed her breathing. It was a meditation exersize. She called out quielty, her mind searching for the beacon that was her familiar. It wasn't hard to find Keiko, and the instant their minds touched the she opened her eyes. Keiko would return soon, and bring with her news of home. Quinasa paled at the thought. What home...?

Aristeaus stood upon the shore looking to the lands beyound, shielding his eyes with a gloved hand the man scans the horizon, taking in the beautifull scenery before him.
What was this place, but yes i imagine Quin would come to such a beautifull land, allways was she the poet in the relationship, being able to find beauty with ease.
With a sigh Aristeaus lowers his hand from his eyes and makes a small gesture behind him to signal the men to set camp.
Quin, your close, i can sense it love. But i shall give you some time.
Turning back to his men Arist smirks and shakes his head.
Your growing old, since when did you rely on others to do your work, not a year past you would allready be by Quinasa side. And none would stand before you..
His minds voice spoke clearly and unbidden, but he knew the answers to his self doubts, as he knew the reasons he must wait.
Older he may be getting, but with age comes wisdom, Quinasa would know when she was ready, no other.

Quinasa bent to pick up Lukas, the child was getting too big to carry but Gail said she'd wanted him inside and he was being a stubborn little...
She stopped mid-crouch.
Lukas was looking up at her with eyes full of tears set in an angry red face topped with thin golden hair, he stopped screaming and just whimpered. Quin was looking about the woods in alarm. There was something on the wind, alien to this land but familiar all the same. Would he come here? The elfess stood up straight and put her fingers in her mouth, whistling a high shrill note. Irania came running out of the house.
"Bring him inside, I'll be back soon."
"Is everything alright sisi?" Irania asked her step-sister. The short elfess nodded and watched the sky. Keiko was spiraling down from the tops of the tall trees.
"I'll be home soon. Don't wait up!" she replied as she watched Irania fight with the boy in her arms the whole way to the house.
"Scout the shoreline, and watch for me," she ordered, softly caressing the white bird on her arm. Before Keiko had taken flight Quinasa was moving to the edge of the clearing and ducking into the heavy brush quiet as the breath of wind that brought her news of her husband's arrival in Paralon.

From just inside the cover of trees Quinasa scanned the shore, stepping over brambles and roots silently as she kept heading southeast. A small encampment came into view just off the docks, something foreign. She hurried quietly along keeping out of sight of inevitable watching eyes. She paused behind a tree and looked up, wrapping her fingers around a lower branch she hoisted herself up and carefully crept from tree to tree until she was almost within earshot of the tents. Her keen elven eyes scanned the men walking around, her heart beating so hard that she feared she would be given away before she was certain...
Just then her eyes found what she hoped they would. She put her fingers to her lips to hide her girlish grin as if someone would catch her. She sat on the branch and watched as her husband sauntered importantly among the men. He looked paced and impatient but she couldn't bring herself to tear her eyes away long enough to get down. Not just yet. He'd been searching for her for some time now. A few more minutes wouldn't hurt.

The shadows swept across the shoreline as the sun set upon the horizon, a carmness came upon Aristeaus as he looked out to the rolling surf, a carmness which he had not felt for some time. The times of late had done much to the still young man. The pressures of the isle were much for one of his age yet he shouldered them as he shouldered everything which came within his path, to him a challange not met was a challange failed. But was this the way it should be, was everything meant to be a challange to be met.
The sun's glare made the cloaked man shield his eyes, the golden path which the sun created in the waters before him beckoned to the mans soul, such peace and hormoney.
His thoughts went back to the early days of survival within the slums, a jungle of urban waste which could swallow a man as easily as the deepest forest. These times which seemed so hard to a young lad now seemed easier than what he know faced, so it was as they all say, in age comes responsibility.
The sun touched the waters in the distance, and the skys turned an exquisite hue of the darkest purple. And the mans thoughts went back to the times at hand, a sadness clutched his heart. What was a sunset not shared with the lady he loved, From all the pain and sorrow the man had been through he knew one person made it all worthwhile, the lady Quinasa, his blossom in the snow. Yet he had lost her, as he managed to lose all which seemed to matter....
Little did he know that this sunset was shared...

Quinasa watched him, standing there on the shore silouetted against the setting sun. It was like a dream, her heart swelling in her chest. He was magnificent to look at outlined in purples and oranges, wearing a cloak of pride to hide his torment. Look what you did, selfish girl, she berated herself and she slipped to the ground. She pushed her white hair behind her ear, a useless gesture as it just tumbled toward her face again. No matter. Trying to gather her wits she stepped out of the woods and stood barefoot in the surf not too far from the camp, just waiting. Waiting for what she didn't know exactly. For him to notice her? She seemed to always be waiting for him to notice her. She worried that she should have watched him for a bit longer but it was too late now. It would be all she needed: for him to see her walking away. She almost laughed. Her heart broke just to think about the things that were going through his head.
Still, he was here. He came here. So she stood as dusk fell around her, fighting the tears that always seemed to be there.
Waiting.
Still, he was here. He came here. So she stood as dusk fell around her, fighting the tears that always seemed to be there.
Waiting.
The sun vanished beneath the awaiting waves, and darkness fell upon the sullen land.
Another day..
Bowing his head the man slowly removed the dark brimmed hat which marked him, and which had followed him through times forgotten, a small shift of his feet turned him from the waters to gaze upon the waiting men who had been at his side through out this voyage.
Soon he would have to make a choice, leave this land and his lady, or to travel within its depths and find the diamond within the rough as his mentor once told him.
A smile crept upon the mans lips and he shook his head as Quinasa's words crept through his mind
Waiting Arist, im allways waiting...
Yes, he would find her. She was right, allways she was waiting, and allways did he take the slow route. It was time to be impuslive and throw caution to the wind.
Raising his head, the command about to be barked from his lips his eyes spot a lone figue upon the tree line.
Could it be..
He raised a hand and wiped his eyes and looked to the figure once more, seeing the white hair which flowed gracefully down her cheeks his doubts left.
'Quin!'
The shout left his lips before thinking, and those sitting about the fires look up in suprise to see the man running across the beach, his cloak catching in the wind's about him. Some went to stand only to be pulled back down by thier comrades.
'Quin, say its you..'
He neared the lady, his breath becomming ragged. Truely he was out of shape, another matter in which he was constantly reminded. His steps slowed as he neared her, but his heart quickened.
Diddn't she tell him to wait, she must think him a clueless fool who couldnt even manage a simple task.
A tear came unbidden to his eye as he stood before the lady and reached out for her hand. and a jumble of words left his lips.
' Quin, i, well, i. '
He sounded like a teenage dolt, damn. damn..
Clearing his throat he spoke again.
' Quin i love you, im sorry '

"I'm sorry"
Before the words had left his lips Quinasa hugged him, throwing her arms around his shoulders and squeezing him as if he were all that would keep her together. He was apologizing! What was he sorry for? The tears she held back came freely now, she could not stop them as he held her and they soaked the shoulder of his cloak. Anything that might happen after this moment didn't matter, all that she was was caught up in this moment of realization and love. She stood on her toes in the wet sand, burying her face in his neck. She couldn't let go of him, not even enough to look at him. She didn't even want to look at him, afraid to own up to what she'd done. She just wanted to stay right here, this way, this moment...
"I'm sorry" she whispered, not letting go a bit though her tears had stopped. "Please don't be upset with me..."

Aristeaus slowly lowered his head, his cheek nestling within her snowy hair, breathing in deeply he took in the scent of morning dew and a single tear rolled down his cheek. The mans arms reached out wrapping the lady in a strong embrace, he felt her body shuddering against his and to his surprise he felt himself letting out a quick sob as the single tear fell to her waiting hair.
‘ Please don’t be upset with me.. ‘
Don’t be upset, the words hit him more forcefully than any physical blow, another shudder tore through the mans body as he clutched to the lady. A soft whisper leaves the mans lips, the words only heard by the lady in his arms.
‘ Upset, you are my life and soul. How can be upset with that which as a part of me ‘
Aristeaus reached up, resting his hand upon her neck, his fingers running through her hair as he held her. He wouldn’t let go, he didn’t know if he could.
‘ Why didn’t you tell me, you should have told me ‘
Placing his lips to her hair he kissed her softly, the moment felt surreal yet nothing else mattered now, she was here, he was here. She was safe..

When morning came Arist bid farewell to his men who in turn stepped onto the first ship headed back to Gobaith. Reluctantly they watched as their lord and his lady walked from the shore to the road and disappeared into the cover of trees. His promise of "returning when he returned" didn't sit too well with them but orders were orders and exactly what they lived for.
Arist and Quin walked hand in hand through the forest and into the small city of Paralon. Quinasa pointed out some shops and showed him where her father and his wife lived, but they didn't stay long. Into the woods again the went, this time not by road. It was a two day trek if leisurely taken, and leisurely they went. Keiko soared above them now and again, always watching, not that there was anything dangerous in these woods. Peace surrounded them in the plant and animal life. It seemed to come from the earth itself. When they came to a stop late in the night Quinasa showed her husband a tree tent. It was large (as were the majority of the trees in the area), the base being almost eight meters around and the tips of the lowermost light-leaved branches touching the ground. She parted the branches and ushered him inside. It was large enough inside for him to stand up straight, and a mass of soft boughs lay to one side as a bed. They spent the entire night nestled together under a wool blanket sharing stories of the past and stories of recent misadventures, sleeping little. When morning came they came out of their shelter to find Keiko waiting for them.
"We should be there by nightfall," she smiled as they set off in a northern direction. They spoke very little for the first part of the day, taking in the beauty of the woods in silence, woods so musical and dear to the elfess that they still took her breath away.

Irania folds her clothes and packs them away into her bag carefully, leaving room for a few small items her mother had given to her.
"Be sure to tell Quinnie that I love her and that i'll send her a letter soon." Irania kisses her mother on the cheek and hugs her tightly. I'll write to you soon as well. Irania takes her leave to return to Trollsbane.

Days had passed uncounted as Quinasa and Aristeaus stayed with her revised family. The meeting of Darrah and Arist was a pleasant one, a bit uncomfortable as most first meetings are, but quickly turning to comfortable smiles and lighthearted conversation. If the tall, dark haired elf was ever wary of his daughter's safety in the faraway land of Gobaith his fears and anxiety melted away in coming to know the young man who so obviously cherished his only daughter.
The rift in their marriage seemingly more than healed, the elfess and her love spoke of returning home. They didn't quite seem thrilled with the obligations it entailed but were willing to give it another attempt. With fresh views and a new outlook on many aspects of not only their marriage but the world that relied and counted on them they felt they were ready.
It was late one night on the bank of a river just out of sight of the cabin, Aristeaus lay holding his wife close. She in turn with her head on his bare chest, her arm draped over his abdomen, both enjoying their last peaceful night in the woods before setting sail. Only the warm intermittent breeze and the water on the rocks beside them disturbed the quiet of the woods around them until Quinasa brought their thoughts to the future.
"It will all be so complicated when I go back to Varshikar," she sighed lifting her arm to itch her nose. After brushing some silver-white hair off her cheek she set her arm across his torso, rubbing his free arm with delicate fingers. "I don't want anyone to feel like I'm intruding. It's been so long."

Aristeaus watched the surf before him, a content smile upon his lips, The person he valued above all others rested within his embrace, all was well.
"It will all be so complicated when I go back to Varshikar,"
"I don't want anyone to feel like I'm intruding. It's been so long."
Varshikar, how was the land fareing. The thought entered his mind for but a moment. The land would be well, those he has left in charge were competent.
' We dont have to return to Varshikar straight away love '
The man turned his head slightly smiling to the fragile elfess, his hand slowly brushing a strand of hair from her face, his eyes meeting hers.
' There is much we can do before we return to that which we left behind '
Kissing Quinasa softly upon the forhead he continues in a light tone
' I nearly lost you once for foolish ambition, it shall not happen again '
------------------------------------------------------------------
The morning sun rose, its rays embracing the lands before it, Two figures stood hand in hand, thier eyes locked to each others.
' It is nearly time my love '
The man turns from the lady, to look upon the approaching ship, a look of slight regret upon his face.
' Are you sure you wish to do this? '
