You need both hands to be free. Then you place it in the right hand of the drawing (on your left)

You drag it into your hand slot, the same place you put weapons or other tools.

I've had two left-handed characters. I never once put anything but a second sword or a shield in their right hands. So you can put the pole in your left hand if your char isn't right handed.

You can put all your weapons and tools in your char's left hand and make them left-handed.
