Mairead walked through the west gate and her eyes wandered immediately to the black pillar at Adrons lake. She smiled.
In her hands she carried carefully a seedling, like it would be the most precious and vulnerable thing on the world. An apple tree seedling.
“Don’t look at it like a seedling. It is your faith that will let it grow”, she remembered Fedaykin, priest of Oldra, saying. She met him yesterday in town and easily recognized him by his white robe with the Bardamen tree embroidered on it.
Mairead kneeled close to the pillar and examined the ground before she started to dig a little hole with her small hands.
Before she put the seedling into it, she raised it to her eyes, looking at it and saying:
“It’s not a seedling that I plant here. It’s my faith and my hope that will grow and spread and bloom”
Carefully she placed it down in the small hole and covered the seedlings roots with the soil, still speaking.
“Where a shadow is, there must be light. And with light comes hope.”
She stood slowly, gazing at the apple tree seedling and giggled at the thought, when the lich would show up, finding a tree growing next to the pillar. With a encouraged smile she turned back to town.
Before she passed the gate she had to chuckle as a thought occured to her: Wasn't the apple tree the symbol of love?
