Newbie questions about rp.
I have been playing for around 2 weeks now and have a few questions about rping a character. First, how important is language when conversing? I don't mean using things like lol or saying ooc while ic, I mean how important is it for dwarves to sound like dwarves and elves to sound like elves as long as they stick to standard racial values and character traits?
Second, I wanted to see if some of the long term players could give some advise. What would be the top five most important (in your eyes) tips, suggestions, or common mistakes that newer players need to know? Once again I am not referring to obvious mistakes like talking about my computer while ic, but some of the things newer players like myself wouldn't think about. I really enjoy this game and spend a lot of off game time thinking about my character and I seriously try to rp to the best of my abilities. I would just like to know a few hints or things to avoid that would turn someone away from my character or things that would make me accepted by the other characters more quickly. I have read most of the forum threads about rp, but most are either for experienced players or brand new players and none for players in between. Players who have the basics of what to avoid at all costs, but not some of the simple finer points of rp.
I appologize if these questions have already been answered and I just haven't found them, and thank you for your help. See you in game.

For a newb, language is on the last of your To-Learn list. However, always a plus that shows off you know what your doing.
1. Staying IC. If your character is always happy with a great outlook on life, then he wouldent try to kill someone becuase they got in an argument. Always try to figureout what your cahracter would do in real life.
2. Proper introduction. The worst thing you can do that just SCREAMS "iimz a n00bz0r lol" is to walk around and just #i people. You need to introduce yourself after RP is sparked. Also, dont go around saying: "Hi! Im XYZ, who are you?" to every person you see.
3. OOC reduction. Using too much OOC makes you look bad. There are alot of post on the forums, try searching REALLY hard before you ask OOC.
3a. use the brackets ALWAYS! ((OOC MESSAGE)). There is nothing worse then attacking someone and then asking: How do i stop attacking? Even if you are a noob, asking OOC is a hell of alot better. People will accualy try and help you if you do ask with the brackets.
4. Bad guy? Big Problem. Villianous characters are hard to handle. You cant just say: "oh, he is a bad guy. Lets go mug some people." It doesnt work that way. And the fact is tons of newbies try to become villians first round! Learn to RP suffeciently, then become the most renowned villian to ever hit Illarion! It could happen if you know what your doing ^-^
5. Singlized Proffession. I find it annoying if characters are grandmasters in every single skill out there. Stick to one, and then practice it. (however, if you are a farmer and want to make your own flails, carpentry would be ok.)
Helpfull Links:
1.Tips and tricks from a queen of Rp
A collection of RP tips from nearly all members of illarion!
2.How to properly introduce ones self
3.Some hints for everything, and how to work the cilent
Cant figure out how to bake that bread? Proboly will find it in here!
mabey the best invention on the forums
4.How to be a villian
I seriously hope i was of some help, and it is good to see a newbie willing to learn Roleplay! Keep it up!

Patience, we don't all type super fast.
Find a niche in Illarion for your pursued profession, so you have something to work for and the skill comes as a nice reward instead of frustratingly hitting your skill cap with nothing to do afterward. This will also gain favor for people to buy from you, and give you some income you can use to buy what your character desires to have.
Don't try to get and do everything yourself, some cases this is unavoidable though.
Fighter-crafter, completely disrupts the economy the supply and demand is contained within the person(s) making trade stagnant which is important thing to keep people active IG and developing rp trade relationships, contracts, and agreements among groups and idividuals. In some cases where there is noone pursuing that craft (lumberjacking anyone?) it won't make a difference, and with a highly demanded resource (mostly mined items & thread) it can only help.
This game's economy is almost completely player-to-player oriented since you simply can't buy or sell many things from npc's, and they have limited money to buy thing's with. Don't rely heavily on them, one day they might have no money and your stuck with a gob of something.
IMO, depends on what language your speaking in. Common its rather customary to have accents, while speaking in a native tongue its usually clearer without much accent. Common is most peoples' second language (if they choose to speak it at all).

I guess I look horrible then. I use OOC all the time. Of course, I always use proper tagging, and I only whisper it.Ziel Oden wrote: 3. OOC reduction. Using too much OOC makes you look bad.
Ziel, I think that the extrapolation about RP you provided would seem a bit menacing towards someone who is new to roleplaying.
To the new member: The key is to just act like your character would, react to your surroundings, and tell your story, so-to-speak. All good things come with time, friend. Oh, and try not to take too much upon your shoulders for your character. (IE, taking on multiple trades.) Just be as your character would and you will do well.
Nowadays, people are way too uppity about exact detail, which can be good, but lately its been awful. Everyone is too obsessed with turning RPs a certain way, or making "the perfect roleplay session." It makes me a sad panda.
I must agree here. An OOC joke once in a while is fun, I must admit. And, Cain, since when are you a panda?!Nowadays, people are way too uppity about exact detail, which can be good, but lately its been awful. Thanks for clarifying that. I understood what you meant, but then again, I've been playing this game for three years. A newer person might not have caught on to what you meant. And I should clarify myself, I didn't quite mean 'menacing'. I meant more like 'overwhelming.'

Think hard about your character before you play. Get a good idea of his basic personality, appearence, etc. Then, as Ziel said, try to stick to this unless there is a very good RP reason to go against it.
Take your time to get into the game. Dont try to be the centre of attention right from the word go. Personally I think its much easier to be accepted if you start off quietly and gradually work your way into society.
As to playing villains...who ever said a villain had to be evil? Or act like a villain all the time?

Main point is to have fun. As allready has been written, just act as your character would, and keep your out of character to a minimum, feel free to bug those ingame, hell it can be fun.
HAVE FUN! interact with other players. dont speak about matters which do not relate to what can not be, ie skill gain etc etc

Cant agree more. Dont bother with all these guides and tips or what have ya. They are all very usefull yes, but first just get in game and be sort of a background character. Have some fun and just chat with people. When you get the hand of the game (controls and people that play) then decide on a more involved character if you want to, or maybe you find it fun just going around talking.Aristeaus wrote:Main point is to have fun. Do what you want, as long as you have fun and dont spoil the fun for others

I want to thank you all for your good advice. I have another question to add, if I may. This may start a debate, and it may have just been answered by the previous post, but what do you suggest as far as characters go? Should I create a few different characters and learn the spread of occupations then decide what to do and create a new character for this, or would it be better to stick with one character while learning rp and continue them on when I find their direction? I would hate for my character to make friends and then loose them when I switch characters but I would also hate for my character to be stuck in a position I dont enjoy rping.
I also think I am learning the most important lesson you have all said. Patience. I came from other morpgs where you get all the tools you need to prosper and you never need to talk to anyone but npc's. I love the way this game is made so you cannot prosper without other player interaction and patience while learning skills. You cannot become one of the best players in a week as I have seen in other games. I ask you all to be patient with me while also while I am learning as I hope in a few weeks or months to be able to add some characters that I think are not played now. I am thinking of a teacher's guild concept or a player ran general store/pawn shop concept. I just have to learn enough to be able to rp these things acceptably if they are not already filled.
Thank you and see you in game.

What I would do is make one character to start. Learn to adapt to the roleplay of others while introducing your own roleplays and then, when you become fairly experienced, or at least accustomed, move on to another character, if you so choose. You won't lose your friends as long as you maintain activity in both characters to some degree.
I would like to say that you are not "coming from MORPGs," rather you are being born into our world. This game, while it is an MORPG, is not a typical one. Something more like a .. GMUD, or so I've heard it called before (Graphical Multi-User Dungeon). Though that definition does not quite describe it properly, either. It is a game of its own. One that focuses on roleplaying over economic obsession and powergaming.
