Your Last Chance/eure letzte Chance

Post by Aegohl »

(English Version Below)

Also hier ist eure letzte Chance.

____________________________________________________________

Many changes are being done to the future map by request of players, GM's, and developers alike. It is likely that after the map is changed, you might get lost for a couple of weeks.

That being said, I worry that there might be complaints. Some buildings look nothing like they used to on my map, since I took an approach to them less like my predecessor who, for the most part, did an incredible job of providing something that looks much like the old map, and instead took it upon myself to revise our cities and landscapes.

So, here is your last chance. Is there anything that absolutely should not be changed? Is there anything that you hold sacred with the map? Are there any buildings that must look exactly the same or you will leave in frustration?

Thank you in advance,

Mitch, on behalf of the Map Editing Team

And the change of the landscape?

Don't understand me wrong. I saw your work, and it is great! But how should the characters react on that? or will it be for them like ever? like the world didn't changed and it is just a new and beautiful version for us players?

mmm..

I think saying what they said in the whipe is wrong. They should atleast put in some clouds, call themselves gods, and say they bless us with landscape like no other.

Just make some big rumbling in the sky, earthquakes, divine natural quick growth, the sound of Irmorom's hammer working in mountains rising... new land being lifted from the sea...

That could explain the landscape issue, but about the buildings... no idea :?

How many times did Silverbrand change form, now? Where is the Shi Long Monastery? How about those three buildings missing in Greenbriar? Where's Silverstar? Eliza's shop isn't much like the old one, due to technical problems. No one seemed to care that those changes took place and no one's rp was too badly effected.

You see, we have a problem. The city of Trollsbane is the worst case, but there are others. The city has been built unnaturally, with no zoning laws, no future plans, nothing. It was just "we have space here, put that there." Now we're in a situation where we don't even have space in Trollsbane.

The Gm's have been saying "no new cities" but where's the room in the current cities? There is none. You want a building? Too bad. Not enough room.

So let's say I expand Trollsbane, add some gardens that could be our future buildings someday. I set it up in a way that there is realistic quarters to the city. You might have a chance to find rp somewhere else in town, because each part caters to a different group of people; rather than everyone camping at the depot at Eliza's.

I suppose what I'm getting at is that the long-term rp benefits far outweigh the short-term problems. We shouldn't be playing the Illarion of five years ago when we can play the Illarion of the future.

Think of this as the wipe after the wipe. This time you get to keep your characters, skills and copper. Enjoy the ride.

Most of the landscape areas will stay the same. There will still be your Troll Forest and your Lake Adron. They'll just change a bit in appearance. There will be a greater variety of terrain in any one spot. It should be more appealing to the eye. I don't see this as any different from you changing graphics cards, because it's an increase in quality more than it is a change in environment.

Although, there might be terrain elements added. At the rl meeting there were complaints that there weren't enough rivers, lakes, and other things of the sort. We did listen, even those of us who couldn't make it. As far as that is concerned, there once wasn't a Lake Adron, and most of us were able to accept that it was always there, even if we hadn't noticed it until after the wipe.

What Mitch was going to say: We simply ignore it.

We ignored the whole wipe, so I this won't be a problem either. ;)
However, the house of the druids and the hospital are paid for. So I will rp it that both has been renovated.

Not for quite some time. The new map involves some components that your current client doesn't know what to do with yet. The testers have a client that these things work with, but there are also new graphics being made as we speak.

That being said, the extra time this gives me allows me to make something really special for you guys and girls. I couldn't allow such an opportunity to pass.

So you might now ask "Why is this our last opportunity, then?" Well, it may come as a suprise to you, but I put a whole lot of hours into the making of this map. I literally get home from work and dash to my computer and start editing. It helps that this is something I enjoy doing, but if I give you this many hours of my time and sweat and you say you want everything different after the fact, I'll simply lose motivation.

Right now I feel it is, perhaps, the best time for you to make proposals and tell me what you don't want changed more than any other time. It's not that I'll simply stop taking input; that will never happen, but this is your moment to really get some words in.

Also ich fände es ja toll wenn man das ganze hier auch mal in deutsch schreiben würde. Denn es gibt auch noch Leute die der englischen Sprache nicht mehr so gewachsen sind.

My apologies, dear. In much the same way, I have no ability to speak your language. I can't translate it, personally, but then I am aware of the problem that if it is translated, I won't understand the replies.

Ah, well. I can try. Could someone send a translation to myself via PM, so I can add it to the original?

You are too slow, Mitch ;)

Edit: And no worries about translation. If any german answers will follow, I shall translate them for you.

Edit 2: I shortened it a bit though.

Aeghol, can we have "examples" for some of the new designs so we can see if we want it changed or not?

Well, you could, but I'd be making enough screenshots to wallpaper your room with, and then run out of time to actually finish the work. I also feel it would take some of the magic out of being there.

Jennifer,

Thank you!!

Danke Gwynnether!

Heheh. Alright. I'll post a few. I have some stored away, anyways. Everything you see will be subject to change as new graphics are brought in, different tiles will be able to transition with eachother, etc.. What you see will only be a quarter of what you will get.

I present to you, the new Greenbriar:

Notice that the hobbit houses are considerabley, small. That would be because they're hobbit holes:

I believe I was told months ago to keep this relatively on the downlow, but I've been working with these tiles for the last few months and all of the testers have seen it anyways.

By the way, to explain the last series of screenshots, since I've already been PMed with questions:

It hasn't been uploaded yet and each level is edited seperately and put together on the server. The black tiles become transparent. Thus each level is on top of the level before it, and you'll be able to see them all together as one cohesive unit.

Feel free, but don't give away too much. There are some things that should be left as suprises.

It's not like this is new technology or anything of that sort. We've had transition tiles in the client for years now; they just didn't link up properly with the regular tiles and were incomplete (Anyone recall those transition tiles that used to be by the Seahorse among other places on the old map that just didn't work together? There you go.)

A discussion between myself and Martin later and *kabang* within a day we had a new experimental client with new transition tiles. Beautiful. It was that day that I started playing with the map editor more seriously, and now, here I am, revealing it to all of you.

Just your piece of recent Illarion history.

one thing i hated more then anythign with this map we are curerntly using:

The river that went infront of elizas shop back in the map before this one. That was the place to be, where the criminals or outcasts can talk back and forth with others. That was a great rp element, one of the ones i missed the most. but it it doesnt work out with that river there then *sigh* I just remember all times i had sitting there talking to criminals, how fooser always used to post up on the other side of the river shouting crowning of kings ans silly stuff. Just that one river had so much potential and had so much rp come from it.

erg we also need to have all the towns closer to water each with a dock with teleporters to each of the other cities becouse it sucks paying for books >< when i go somewhere it costs money and i have no motivation and no sence of direction to walk that far around ><

perhaps even make it a cost to use the teleporters? Most 10 gold please...some of us live pay check to pay check and jobs only come when someone hires you...not to mention prices....equipment costs a helluva lot now.
