The Tragedy of Alica

Post by Garett Gwenour »

Stephen took the cold body, limp and small body of the young girl Alica from the Grey Refuge. He didn't seem to really have any heart anymore. It had not felt this bad when he couldn't defeat Nightmare to save Emily, because he could still imagine saving Emily, who now was saved.
But Alica was gone, killed by someone Stephen didn't know, or very possibly could never find. He could blame no one but himself. Alica had thought of him as a father, and what had he done for her? Kamik had assaulted her and he did nothing, she had fended for herself and was killed and he came to late.
He had been wanting to speak with Alica about the allegations Kamik had thrown about her, but something had held him back. As he walked Alica, he wasn't even sure where he was taking her, he had walked into the forest and his feet seemed to know where his brain wanted them to go. He reflected on how small she was, she had been such a nice girl, so pretty and friendly. She was so small, she had so much she had wanted to do. She had never fallen in love, she had never been able to tell Stephen all about herself or he about her, there was so much he should have asked her but he never did.
He never could now. What had held him from coming to her earlier? Was it fear of finding out she really was an assasin? No that was not it, what he feared was being to close to her. He was afraid to be close to anyone. He never could be with anyone truely, he could never reveal all of his past. It was scared with such lies and cheats that people would never want to speak to him if they knew how he had used and failed his family name.
So, in essence, he thought to himself, it was his fault Alica was slain. He should have come to her sooner, he should have confided in her and maybe she would have done the same with him. But all this thought of it was for no reason, she was gone now.
As he walked through the forest he would speak to Alica, like a father would speak to his daughter who was to tired to walk, her limp form lay cradle in his arms. He would point out herbs or squirrels, small things he had never done with her while she was alive.
Finally he broke free of the forest and found himself infront of the lighthouse ruins, and he understood. Alica had wanted to live in the new town, with Stephen and they would have been happy. Here she would be laid down to rest for eternity, near the lighthouse, where she could be where she had wanted to be.
Stephen dug the grave alone with an old rusty shovel he found conveniently leaning against the crumbling bricks of the lighthouse, the earth was easy to dig through, Stephen did a lot of thinking as he dug. At last he finished the grave, laying Alica down wrapped in Stephens forest green cape, her entire body covered.
"Good bye Alica, I love you." Stephen murmured as he finished burying the body.
Stephen came back to the grave later on he planted an apple tree sprout where Alica lay, here he thought was a marker for her, something more, so everyone will know that Alica Scarface lays here.

Alone with only Alica's sprout, Stephen let himself cry and watched the sprout grow and its roots go deep.

An elf in a grey coat silently passes by, watching the scene. As usual, his face does not display much emotion, only his eyes leave the impression of sadness for a moment as he hears Garett speaking the name of Alicia.
He stops quietly, looking at Garett, then to the grave. The elf sighs, looking sad for a very short moment, shaking his head a bit. Then he slowly and silently turns, walking back into the slightly foggy woods.
A few moments after he vanished, a clear voice can be heard echoing from somewhere out of the woods : "Namaarie, Alicia Scarface. Quel lema, adon."

After his day of work, a Heavily armored Lizard arrives to see Stephen at their home, he goes to greet him happily, but sees that there is a grave with a sprout in it and drops to the ground, his legs having no will to keep up his body. He knew at once who it was..and couldnt control himself

"w..w...wh..-"
he cant even finish a sentence, nor a word. Distraught and crying more than he has ever cried in his life we watches the sprout, right beside stephen, his eyes turning blue, but he was not at peace. he was feeling complete sorrow. He turns to Stephen for some answers as to why, the Girl he guarded, was now dead, but couldn't say a word to him. Just looks at him with tears running down his face and word caught in his throught

Kamik opens his eyes suddenly only to find he isn't dreaming. He look to his side and sees Devrah sleeping and he smiles. The peace on her face while sleeping is enough to bring that smile.
He stands, already covering his deficient arm with a blanket. He coughs low, not to wake his fiancee, and moves slowly to the window of that room on the inn. He takes a deep breath. Away, he sees the lights of the Grey Rose.

Alica.

He calls to the air, as if by saying that name he would get a response. But not anymore. He didn't want to think about the idea of her ghost coming to him in nightmares. He didn't want that to happen. But one thing he also didn't want to happen was regret what he did. He did what he believed in. He did what he should. Prevent a guild of assassins to be formed. It didn't matter if she was a mere child if she already could wield a blade towards someone with skilled hands and dark desires. No... it didn't...

...

Kamik feels the cold night wind blowing through the window and hears Devrah muttering something behind him. The young guard closes the window and returns to the bed, allowing his eyes to close, still thinking about the young girl's death; waiting for the nightmares to come.

When Devrah awakes, Kamik is already gone. She is awoken by some odd instinct, an urge to speak with Alica.

-My sister-, she muses, trying hard not to think of the pain this 'adopted' sister is causing her simply by forcing her to remember that she once had a real sister, a sister that had been brutally murdered.

Shaking the thoughts away, Devrah gets ready quickly, strapping her greatsword to her back per habit and sliding two longswords into her belt. Her face is a perfect mask of assurance and uncaring, but her thoughts run rampant with unexplained concern for the young lady that she had adopted as her younger kin. It had not been an official adoption; rather, Alica needed someone to protect her, and Devrah needed someone to keep a small bit of childhood in her heart...The heart that she herself had given up on long ago, accepting it for lost since the age of six. Only Kamik had been able to reach behind her cold eyes and lift the mask, only Kamik had been able to embrace her so warmly that her hear hadt melted and beat again.

She forces the thoughts and demons from her mind as she walks with a confident, catlike gait to the Grey Rose castle, the last place she had ever seen Alica; the place where she had told Alica that she would be there to protect her if she needed it, the place where she had comforted the girl over the actions of her own fiance...

She reaches the gate of the castle, and a guard stands there. Somehow, before he even finishes asking her name and business, Devrah knows,

"Alica"... it is a mere whisper, and she turns swiftly and walks back the way she came. All the while, her last conversation with Alica plays in her head:

Alica had explained the conflict between her and Kamik over the would-be assasins' guild
-He said I either had to disband the guild or find myself dead-
-What of your guild? How does it stand now?-
-It is currently inactive until all members meet up for a meeting. I will keep it active and running though, whatever Kamik says..-
After that, Devrah had spoken the words that she thought at the time to be the best... Now, she wondered, without knowing how Alica had died, if her own words to the girl had played a part in her demise.
-Alicia, I will tell you; I have been responsible for the deaths of many, innocent and guilty both. The guilt haunts me to this day. I will not make your choices for you, and you are my sister no matter what. Just keep in mind that a death cannot be reversed, and gold is no replacement for a life. trust you to do what is best for yourself. Just remember, I am here if you need me, to talk or anything-

...

As Devrah waslk the streets back to Trollsbane, replaying her last words to Alica over and over, a feeling of intense self-hatred wells up inside her. She should have told the girl to disband the guild, should have forced her to come back to Trollsbane with her... How stupid of Devrah, to think that just because she had made her own choices all along and had still lived thus far, that the same path would work for Alica. Her intent had been to allow Alica to come to the right decision on her own instead of forcing her to do what was right, but perhaps Alica had been too young to be given that freedom.

-I must find out how it happened- she thinks.

Her eyes and face are perfectly, expertly blank; one would think her taking a casual stroll but for the weapons on her...but inside, her miond and her heart were tearing each other apart.

An elf clad in blue looks upon where alica's grave is... and frowns...he speaks to what he'd expect alica's spirit to be,...

"I warned you, you should have never left the archers; you defiled yourself with your assissins, and now you are dead"

He drops a single blue flower upon the grave, as a reminder....

Upon hearing of Alica's death, Nialandra now finds herself standing by the sprout that was planted for her. In deep thought, Nialandra closes her eyes with a sorrowful frown, then drops to her knee's resting on her shins.
Nialandra whispers a few words that disapates softly into the wind:

Poor child, this was not your time to leave this world.

Opening her eyes, Nialandra turns to her side bag. Lifting up the leather cover, she produces a small sweet smelling reddish pink flower reminding her of the childs lovely pink cheeks. She takes the flower, and keeps it close to her heart then gently places it by the sprout.
A tear or two fall slowly down Nialandra's cheek.

Lifting herself up with the aid of her sword, one thought runs through her mind:Who kill's a child!
Taking her dark cloak edges and wraping them around herself to keep the cold breeze at bay coming off the sea, Nialandra turns in the direction of which she came from, walking slowly as if she had lost a dear sister close to her heart. Still with that thought running around her now angered mind
