Lame. I will always stick to the stylish thieves, with the great innovative RP skills to back it up.
A small hint on the side here, which, in my opinion, has nothing to do with the topic: Copy other people's RP a little. watch the style off them, and experiment yourself once you feel you have found the ropes of being a true thief. But, that is just my humble opinion ofcourse.

Just a little hint:
My character is just good in slashing weapons...an assassin/thief isn't a good fighter, but they're good with daggers.
Anyway, I prefer to take the initiative before mugging a target. A lot of thieves get it all wrong when they walk up directly in front of the person and say "drop your stuff, or else" #me pulls out his weapon. Then you have to rely on skill to win.
Going up behind them and putting the knife at their throat makes it hard for them to resist you.
Although, I've tried this a few times against some guys, who magically walk through your knife, mock you and fight back/run.
But for the most part, it works.

As Gro'bul once wrote, not if you use the magic word
attempt.
#me attempts to sneak up on the person
#me slings out a knife and attempts to hold it to the man's throat
Such a method of using #me's allows the other player to consider an appropriate reaction depending on their character, and gives them a cue to work with. That way, they can cue you back upon whether the attempt was successful or not.
Oh, and there are other magic words just like it, but they all boil down to "try".

I kind of mix it up between the "attempt" and the "just plain doing so" for two reasons:
1.) Attempt will more likely than not lead to failure. Prepare for a trip to the cross if you use this a lot.
2.) If I sneak up behind a guy, they wouldn't really get a chance to react anyway.
I got a sword out of some guy yesterday. He tried to pull a fast one on me by dropping his weapon at a space ahead of him so I'd have to retrieve it by walking. No no, I just asked for it closer and it was done.
Not a bad take. Usually all my guy has are cheap, crap daggers.

Doesn't matter, you might try this on a person who has 20agi and is a grandmaster in dodge and they manage to dodge you and run away and your like "OMFG WTF?" never knowing his agility or skills but still thinking it was bad roleplay.Bloodhearte wrote:I kind of mix it up between the "attempt" and the "just plain doing so" for two reasons:

But on the other hand, they could be as slower than iceberg movement.
My brother frequently refers to himself as a "worm" before he tries to squirm out of a body lock from me. He's skinny enough, but he never gets out anyway.
Now imagine if a "worm" tried to do this with a sharp object pressing on his throat.
I think agility and dodge applies for when the individual is ready for a confrontation...all that stuff falls apart when surprise comes in (if it didn't I'd have to balance my character's fighting skills rather than just letting him stay the way he is in slashing). Surprise is an element that gives my character an edge over those "blessed" with great attributes and skill.
But that's not to say I never give them a chance...even turning around to face me while I'm sneaking up on them prevents my guy from doing his thing, my strategy can fall apart just as easily.

Well, I don't have a theif character, and on the whole it might never occur. I'm not that good at roleplaying 'evil' characters, I'll admit it. Perhaps if my character gets robbed often enough I might be able to attempt one. I'll never have a pure murderer though. Those would be nightmares to play for anyone, unless they /like/ being anti-social.
Anyhow, about the theif skills-Perhaps a few distinguished 'thieves' could gain the skills /by/ roleplaying them. Meaning you can't start out as a theif or something with the ability to do so. But a few of the good current thieves might somehow gain the skills-And pass them on to a chosen few if they happen to be even slightly social. Just a thought. It'd be hard to implement I suppose, but it'd keep the people who would just use the skill to rob someone from becoming a professional theif.

Basically it boils down to this, or at leats what i have seen through rping a thief:
1) If you dont say try, attempt, or the like, the person tends to magically get free. More foten then not, for me, when I go
"#me begins trying to sneak up on the man, being careful not to make a sound"
I will get something like
"#me doesn't take notice"
however, if I do something like (only did it once, when i was first gettind used to rping a thief)
"#me sneaks up behind the person"
I got
"#me pwnzorz you!!!"
well, not exactly, but you get the point.
But of course, this relies on rping on the victim's part. I'll give these tips:
1) If you have high perception, and would see someone sneaking, try to do something like "#me's sensitive ears pick up a sound, and he turns around to see what it was", rather than "#me hears and turns around". Otherwise it may appear like you are a bad rper.
2) If you have low perception, you do not have magical abilities to know when someone's there, and should act as such.
3) If you are distracted by something else, like talking to someone, take that into account. You are less likel;y to notice someone rummaging through your bag when you are having a conversation with a friend. However, your friend may still see the person depending on which way they're facing and such.
4) If you are being mugged rather than snuck up on, and you said that you didnt notice being snuck up on, no matter how good your agility you wont likely get out of a sudden subdual. However, if you have high strength, you may try to remove their arm, but give them a chance to keep you there, their strength may be just as high.
5) Lastly, do not just ignore when someone rps trying to take something from your bag. It's better even to magically notice than to act like no one is there.
And likewise, the thief needs to rp well too:
1) Even with high dexterity, you are not the god of stealing, rp accidentally bumping the bag or pocket you're stealing from every once in a while. I'm not sayign every time, more like 1 out of 10-20 times, depending on dexterity.
2) If someone hears you, they aren't automatically rping badly, they may have good perception, and just not #me that fact.
3) Rp everything when stealing. Rp sneaking up, getting your hand in the bag, and attempting to get something. You need to give chances for the other person to rp as well. If you do something like "#me sneaks up, opens the persons bag, and grabs something", it looks very bad on your part, and it is very unlikely that the person willcooperate. If you're unlucky, they'll just kill you for it.
That's all I can think of right now. Hope this helps.

I didn't really get that... How would the person afront of him not notice?3) If you are distracted by something else, like talking to someone, take that into account. I basically mean, if the thief is just sneaking up rather than relying on shadows. It would be noticable in, say, the middle of town, while in a cave someone might not notice that their friend is being pickpocketed.The-Puppeteer wrote: I didn't really get that... To Karri.-> If you are not good at rping evil characters dont worry,,,
If you want to become a successful theif you have to gain the trust of whoever to be able to get close enough to them, rping someone evil may be the totally exact way to failure...
RE: rping--> but thats a bit strange, by the time you #me yr message, the theif would have gone, stolen and ran away...

but i have not actually been known as a criminal *yet* and if i rp it ever. it would make my name go around as a criminal. and how often do people actualy go along with the rp? i mean people usually say they catch you and then just kill you. they ruin the whole expieriance and dont give us thieves a chance.

if the person says that he "trys" to do something you don't always have to follow
Example: #me trys to grab the halfling, you could respond with #me slips from his grasp or something of the sort, if they say it in a way that you are forced it is called force rp THAT is bad and should be brought to the players attention
If you were a theif and you were caught, people would pursue you. It is the same IG, try to be sneakier about what you do then you might not have the whole town chasing after you...

Be descreet.. most people here are great RPers... don't #me inserts the hand into the bag, that's risky...
#me dumps into the person as he passes, slitting the bag open with a dagger
"Oh sorry"
#me applologies
[Partner] #me digs his hand into the slit bag and takes some coins out
[victim] "Oh never mind, it was just an accident"

Ding ding ding! Force RP bell tis a ringin'!
#me takes coins from the person.
((DUDE U P0SER! RROCEASD RP!))
ahh.. good ol' Illairon.
#me reaches in for any kind of bag or purse. His hand is like a deadly cobra slithering through a small pipe. His fingers gently feel in search of any kind of gold or small object.
