Death?
Somewhere I read something that made me get the idea that if a player attacks another player and defeats them, the defeated one only gets knocked out, dropping items but not actually dying. Is this really true?

A "friendly duel" ?
Intressting discription of an action where you hit each other hard, with mostly sharp objects, causing pain and injuries to your opponent.
Excuse me, but I rather dont want to be considered as a "friend" of you.
On topic, its rather obvious that sooner or later characters can be knocked out and will again drop items upon thier defeat.
But how and when is written on another page.

It depends on your skills.
You just drop items at a certain skill amount.
You can give a newbie an inventory full of things, as long as he has 0 skills or really less skills he won't drop anything when he dies.
That was implemented in the old client to avoid that newbies are losing their only few things (hammer, shovel) when they get killed.

And that exactly is why the mummy tomb was such a pain in the <censored> to me personally.
You could go down, could not move back up, ergo try one last futile attempt at attacking one of the mummies, and all the fiends would slap you to death so quickly in concert that your skills shoot up and you get an automatic "you're too tired to learn more yadda yadda" and you could kiss your items good bye.
Just a thought, toodles.
