Fighting the Demon

Post by Jeremy Gems Willowbrook »

Jeremy ran through Trollsbane looking for Athian and Arkadia. He heard screams and shouts from by the tavern and headed in that direction. Rounding the corner of the tavern all was confusion. Flames lit the near side of the square. On the far side stood the Demon easily fending off several attackers. The shout went up...."where are Athian and Arkadia".
Jeremy knew he had to do something to help. He stood out of the way as fighters lunged in to attack the demon and retreated out of its reach. The Demon held its ground swatting at the attackers, fending off the blows with relative ease. Jeremy started casting healing spells to help the attackers against the demons blows.
"This is hopeless" he thought. "Athian and Arkadia had better get her soon."
Attack after attack was repulsed by the Demon. Jeremy heard someone call Athians name. "They must be here. But will they be able to get close enough to use those axes?" he thought.
Jeremy had an idea. Every time he cast a healing spell the Demon seemed to look his way a little. Sensing the magic? "Maybe I can distract him a little. Give them an opening."
Jeremy concentrated. Summoning mana to him. Binding it with Hept and giving it wings with Kel. The image formed in Jeremys mind. He pushed it into existence, adding his mana to give it physical form. He cast the ice blast at the Demon. As soon as he cast he braced himself for the backlash.
"This is going to hurt", he thought.
The Demon half turned as the bolt sped towards it. Effortlessly he caught the bolt absorbing the mana. With a snarl the demon sent a bolt streaking back at Jeremy. Jeremy tried to duck behind the depot but, as fast as he moved, the bolt was faster. It struck him squarely in the chest. Sending him flying back into the wall of the tavern. His armour froze and shattered as the bolt exploded. The Icebird pendant beneath glowed fiercely...absorbing most of the force before it too exploded.
Jeremy passed out as the bolt seared into his chest, incredible pain racking his entire body. He lay in the corner unnoticed until, some time later, he began to stir.
Revlen and Rebecca stood by the chest. Jeremy groaned as he regained consciousness. The pain flooding back into his chest.
"I hope it was worth it", thought Jeremy.
"Are you alright", Revlen asked.
"I will live", Jeremy managed to stammer.
Revlen dressed and bandaged the wound.
"Teach me to cast at a Demon", Jeremy said between gasps of pain.
Revlen and Rebecca left and Jeremy pushed himself up...using the wall for support. He headed towards the tavern where he heard many voices. Happy at the defeat of the Demon though many were wounded. Jeremy staggered towards the door. Pain lancing through his chest with every step. He got halfway to the door before he passed out, tumbling into the hedge. He lay there unseen and unnoticed.

Later that eve, the two Novices Domitrio and Sian had been seen lazing around in front of the shop, complete physical wrecks from the battle against the demon—laughing about the lack of creativity of fiends, and laughing about how they should have been dubbed heroes. Despite the streets having emptied themselves after the incidents, some saw them taking a boat off the island with a crate of wine for luggage.

A small cloud of breath danced before his eyes as he stood in the small cobble square in front of the tavern the nippy evening air doing little to calm his feverish thoughts. Adjusting his cloak slightly he heaved a sigh of relief such a simple pleasure material instead of his metal around his shoulders. Words John had once spoken echoed in his thoughts. Soldiers carry the weight of the world on there shoulders, so others do not have to. I don’t know about the world but lately the armor has been weighing me down he announced to the empty square.
How ever it was not simple duty he had come here to examine, slowly almost painfully he turned his eyes to the charred cobbles and the feint impression of a pentagram still burnt black upon them. He had touched evil or had he been touched the images replayed before his eyes.
Another beer? Domitrio he had grinned as they turned from there duel and the lava rock had begun to rain from the sky. He had taken all of four steps when the unearthly smell flooded his nostrils and there it was.
Novice Domitrio: What the hell!
Novice Domitrio: It's hailing?

The mans words behind had meant nothing as he saw the abomination step from the ring of fire. The creature which had so haunted his thoughts for almost a year and trespassed upon his dreams with such temptations. The moment he saw it he had known only hesitation would kill him quicker than the demon. Steeling his nerve he had flanked it at a run and thrown his momentum and what little weight he had into a blow to its thigh. He shivered reliving the moment his axe had simply glanced off the creatures hide and those eyes turned on him. Fear stole his resolve as the fiery orbs looked down him penetrating his very core like flames licking his soul. His first parry had been non existent simply his axe found it self in the claws path as they tore through his amour and deep into his chest, reflex and pain had brought his axe up to his left shoulder as a claw sank deep. Certainly the only thing that had saved him from losing the arm as he was thrown back wards like a doll. Crashing into the well and landing hard on his chest the stones beneath him instantly wet and warm with blood he was dimly aware of the creatures pounding foot steps approaching him as he lay dazed and prone.
Surrender!
Sian: Never!Novice Domitrio: Never!
You cannot stop me!
Sian: In the name of all that is holy
Sian: Prepare to die, fiend!

They had attacked it, bless there courage for it had drawn the beast’s attention long enough for him to drag himself to his knees. Yet courage had failed him armor torn and truly bloodied he had stood and simply watched. Unable to move or act it was this moment which tormented him. What use was his axe if the life behind it couldn’t be spent with purpose? He lowered his back against the wall and gritted his teeth against the burning pull of his numerous stitches. Squeezing his eye’s shut against tears he wished he could have attributed to pain his thoughts drifted back to the sleeping lady he had left to wander the early morning and he smiled despite himself.
As long as you stay with me even in my melancholy I shall find joy
It is as if in crystalline clarity of tears. The veil that is sorrow magnifies all beauty about me. Indeed just from knowing you even tears can make the world sparkle.

Quiet words whispered to the first signs of dawn he hitches his cloak around his shoulder and pulls the hood over his head slowly turning to head back towards the sea horse.
Perhaps there was some solace in a few more hours spent watching the gentle breathing of his hearts owner could sooth his nerves. The traces of a smile creep across his lips as he a simple thought comes to him.
Coward ?maybe but rather a lucky coward than a dead hero.
Leaning heavily on his staff he slowly limps back down the street aching head to toe wincing from the wicked pull of rows of stitches, smiling regardless.

Several days after the first battle with the Demon Jeremy was feeling much better. His chest felt tight and a little uncomfortable, but no longer painful. He took the bandages off. The swelling had gone down and only some bruising remained. Everything looked fine except for a small lump on the left side of his chest. It showed slightly blue through the skin. It was hard to the touch, but not painful, and showed more blue when touched. It was a small piece of his Icebird which had punctred through the skin and lodged between two of his ribs. It was wedged fast. It wouldnt budge at all when pressed or pushed.
Jeremy sighed. "Another day, another scar, another strange happening."

Jeremy had been feeling better after his injury at the hands of the Demon. Apart from the piece of Icebird lodged in his chest he was feeling much better. To celebrate he wandered into the tavern to see who was about. The tavern was empty apart from the barkeep. Jeremy ordered a beer and sipped it slowly waiting to see if anyone came in. Time passed, as did Jeremys good humour. He had work to be getting on with.
Without thinking he downed the rest of his beer. Immediately he knew it was a mistake. He could feel the headache begin instantly. It began to get worse, the pressure building quickly. It was going to be a bad one. Then he felt the burning start in his chest. He staggered from the tavern and headed towards the shop. His intention was to head to the seahorse to rest and wait out this bout of illness. He hoped it would not be as bad as in the past.
In his confused state he wandered too far and ended up in the West woods. With both pains getting worse by the moment he staggered on until he could walk no further. He collapsed to his knees knowing he was in trouble. He concentrated as best he could, summoning his mana and calling on the runes. He tried to focus his healing upon himself. The piece of icebird in his chest glowed, seeming to draw the mana to it. The fragment seemed to get colder, radiating the coolness outwards. The burning in Jeremys chest lessened. He began to feel a little stronger. He concentrated harder. Drawing in more mana. The fragment drawing it in to his body, focusing it. Jeremy concentrated, entering a trance. He searched inside himself for the cause of his bouts of illness, trying to target it with the mana flowing into him. He called upon all his reserves of strength and knowledge trying to purge himself of the illness which had plagued him since childhood.
After what seemed like an eternity he thought he found what he was looking for. He could see in his memories when it had all started and feel the damaged area within his body. He concentrated on these and released the mana. The fragment dissolved sending icy needles shooting throughout his body. Jeremy passed out.
When he awoke he was sitting under an apple tree in Greenbriar.
Physically he felt wonderful. Better than he could ever remember. But his memory seemed very hazy. Greenbriar looked familiar, but at the same time so different. As he stood he could remember all the things that had happened but not the faces of anyone around him. Names came into his head, but he couldn’t picture faces.
Absently he went to conjure some food, but couldn’t remember how to do it. He knew he had done it many times before, but how? He couldn’t remember.
After a moment of panic he calmed himself. He had put his mind and body through a great ordeal. Rest and time would bring everything back. He took a deep breath and walked around Greenbriar.
Feeling a bit the worse for wear he stopped to have a wash. It was then he caught sight of his reflection. The features were the same but the eyes that looked back at him were Ice blue where they should have been brown. The brown curly hair was now nearly straight and almost blonde. His pale skin now looked healthy. Which made the scar on his forehead more prominent. Jeremy stared at his reflection for some time. “This is going to make things interesting “, he thought. “I cant remember anyone and they wont recognise me.”
He headed for Trollsbane in search of his memories and his belongings.
