Char Wipe Questions

I think most people are focusing on the wrong part of the problem. Yes, I accept that it is a problem. Without proper guidance there will be a lot of confusion, but just like most other things of this nature, it's in the hands of the player to see what he wants to do. I personally would love to keep my character, but I am not going to. Mainly because I would like start over. And in part because I wouldn't want to mess with someone else's "Old name, new RP" plan.
The consensus of the people I've talked to is to just start new character. It would be much easier, though it's up to all of you until the GMs make a decision to "take the power out of you hands" (or whatever the quote was). I know that the first few days will be a bit... buggy, but eventually we'll all be fine. Good RPers can rise above little things like world destruction and plot holes.

Why is that? There seems to be a definite mis-understanding about the concept of a roleplaying game here. When you applied for Illarion, didn't you write a piece on your understanding of the concept of roleplaying? Why are people so reluctant to embrace a clean-slate? You should see it as an opperunity to craft new stories, develop new ideas and forge stories with other people. Remember: Illarion is a community game. You play with others to create a shared roleplay! It isn't just about your own personal experience.Ules wrote:And if that happens Illareion will become a once in a while game for me.
As Martin has already said, you will always have the memories of your past roles in Illarion, isn't it time to create a new role?
Of course, I'm in no way biased towards either a clean slate or a continuation. This is just a random thought that popped into my head.

You know.. the more I think about it. The more I want Domitrio. Ugh this is too much of a headache. There should be SOMETHING said either way. I.... hell I don't know. Maybe Domitrio under a new name.. though I like that name. It'll... *Head explodes*
*Walks to yellow cross*
I don't know... just go with the flow. No stress. The thing is, we ALL lose stuff. It'll be alright.. I swear it will.

@Dom: I wholeheartedly agree there.

Was hoping to swerve more people to try out the "back to square one"-opinion, but hey, if some people are so emotionally attached to their characters, I won't be the one to hurt their feelings.
The way I see it right now, there are way too many players and different opinions for us all to find a common ground, so I suppose the decision will eventually land in the hands of the GMs (and we can blame them for any resulting misery, har har!). Any way you take it, be it the players or the GMs, it will not stop me from roleplaying.
Peace.
I'm only acting it.Fooser wrote:And why are some so reluctant for continuation?

Simple solution
The demons came back. A huge war was fought and many died (to explain characters missing)
The rest were imprisoned for a decent time (a cople years, which explains skill loss)
The town was ransacked (which explains item loss)
Even some slaves were experimented on (which explains some characters with memory loss)
Evntually the slaves rebel and take back the island (which explains why the buildings are all there) but the few survivors noticed the demons had begun to change their land (explains changes to the map)
Tada, all settled.
Now obviously this would need far more detail, but someone talented could write a damn nice story....now just erase the RP board, and write the story as the single post.

Forgive me.. but in Illarionite lore.. Wasn't there trouble with the gods at one point? If the gods saw fit to wipe the island of life.. that would work. And they would choose those they saw worthy to continue life there (Those who can't pull away from their characters), and leave them totally unskilled and unequiped, like children, to restart life on the island....
Wow.. ideas ARE easy to come up with.
Wow.. ideas ARE easy to come up with.
I actually think that Domitrio had the best idea right there...
The gods become angry and destroy all life, and everyone's items and skills disappear. But then some gods are angered at that and restore life to certain individuals (Those who want to keep their characters). Sounds perfect to me.
And maybe during the event, there would be major geological changes to the island, and thats why the island has become larger.

I warn that I am not part of this conversation as part of my GM duties and never was. I'm part of it as a GM, but as an individual GM. There are five active GM's currently: Arien, Cassandra, Estralis, myself, and a new one that I will allow to announce his presence to you all personally.Domitrio wrote: Good idea though... I wonder what the GM sentiment is... still...
I will not speak for the other GM's individually, but I am quite sure that the vast majority of them are on the side of keeping history and going on as though nothing happened, as much as that is possible. I, on the other hand, am either within the minority or, perhaps, I am the minority, wholly. I am unaware of the opinion of the new one.
As an individual GM, I'm simply asking you all to debate it, more or less, for the sake of understanding both sides of this argument. I can't promise any result from it. However, it helps me understand the situation more, hearing your arguments.

I guess we are running out of time. So if we are going to have a story we best pool ideas and get it sorted.
So...in light of the new information we have about the map...and to aid in continuation of storylines I will amend my suggestion.
Instead of landing on a different Island the survivors could be lost at sea for a month or so. Hit by storms...blown off course, etc. During this time they go around in a full circle...landing back on the old Island.
As already stated changes in the map can be ignored. We RP that it was always that way. (If its removed....the Skulll cave collapsed or some such. Maybe one of those little mysteries. Ready to be rediscovered at a later time? A quest for the orcs to find the old cave?)
Suggestions? Amendments?

I still firmly believe that a complete history wipe is the only good way to go about this. Think about it, you loose all your skill and items, and gold you have saved up for so long, and so does everyone else right? But, what about those who have enought to purchase buildings? Now they don't loose everything do they? This will make thing very unbalanced. Someone could have had hundreds of gold ignots, but someone with even a tiny building will still have that after the wipe.
And i don't believe any role play excuse/reason, will be able to smoothly transition everyone into the new server.
Aslo, for those who have become so attatched to there old characters and don't want to leave them, i totally understand that. But, you can easily have another character with the exact same personality and everything, even relatively same life story. Even brand new character have some sort of made up background, they didn't just come into existance rp wise.
Without a complete history wipe, there will be to much confusion on what characters, guilds, and organizations still exist. Yes, people and organization have just vanished in the past, but that wasn't as wide spread as this will be. You won't be able to be sure of almost any of them at the beginning.
With everyone having no skills whatsoever, they will be much more equal in some respects. How can there be a thriving city, of people who can't do much more that basic tasks. And can you imagine they town gaurds without the ability to fight.
Lets do away with all the confusion, and just start right from the beginning. Things will be very simple. Eventual leader will arise, governments and organization with beging to form once more. And it will have happen in a much more organized and realistic fasion.
I think that about sums up everything i have to say about the wipe.
Thankyou for reading it

Cliu makes the critical point both can work.
The skill wipe can be rped around with just a little flair, dont ask galim for an axe. Ask him what he has in stock in a week or so and such like.
It is going to be pure chaos what ever we do. There is sense to the complete wipe. How ever with out an entirely new map it is just as full of holes really.
On top of this perhaps if we had decided to wipe history earlier with say 2-3 months to tie it all up. People may have been prepared. How ever I cant help but feel that wiping out the game history now is going to cause us to lose many active and influentle players who are currently very active.
What ever happens lets just get it done and get back to gaming. Seems we have two distinct sides, that said which ever opinion wins out. I hope we can all just rise above the dissapointment and get stuck back into the game.
SHould be a lot of fun to have so many people online again.

Now we know, how to continue our RP.
But there is still one question: How should we explain that everyone lose all his skills and items?

Jetzt wissen wir, wie wir das RP fortsetzen sollen.
Aber da bleibt noch eine Frage: Wie sollen wir erklären, das jeder seine Erfahrung und Gegenstände verloren hat?

Agreed.
• I've never had any pipe for smoking nor did my character smoke Sibanac, but instead something... that always remained unnamed (Har har, no "Sian: You are stoned" for me).
• Rackere Diplomatre the dwarf always had mainland-imports of liquors, strictly RPed and "non-physical" by client standards, no different than a normal beer in sense of graphics.
• Duelling while having forgotten to equip a weapon but described the weapon in #me's and rp'ed to lose—happened to me many times too.
• Wanting to have a smith repair my armor and enhance my weapon (which is not possible in the current client, but I want to rp anyway), this would be purely rp. Heck, the smith could have zero resources, zero tools, even zero skill; nobody would notice if it's all RPed cleverly.
Just some ideas to get the uncreative minds in gear...
