Determined Man RP??
I'm not sure if this counts as powergaming but....
My character is fairly new to Illarion and is pretty bad everything like most newbs would be but i have had to be saved countless amounts of times so i would like to RP my character as a determined man who wants to prove himself to the town. Now would it be ok to stay simply in one place and level up my abilitys for the most part of the day,im not saying im gonna stand there like a rock and do nothing but kill, but to include certain things like *Kidarien sits down and curses his lack of ability* and so on i think it might be a good rp for certain people but im not sure if its against the rules would this be considered as Powergaming?

Sheesh, to be honest chief, I'm not sure if I even know what powergaming is anymore.
IMO, there is no restriction to how long/hard you can work on a certain thing. My only advice is to quit if you're being purely influenced out of character to raise a skill. It just creates problems for other players.
Personally, it's too boring for me to raise skills. There's my motivation not to "powergame."

Powergamming is all about honesty. When I complete a task such as making some leather armor, casting a spell, fighting a skeleton, or making a new staff the very last thing on my mind is Gee, I wonder if my skill is going up. I should do a couple more just in case. I cannot even tell you the last time I noticed when my character got "better" at anything because frankly I have not payed enough attention. If you are worried you have no skills at the moment, you are not required to overwork your character to raise a skill. This game will be around for many years which gives you ample time to slowly increase your skills. This, I believe, would also be more rewarding.

I agree with bloods view standing around killing monsters for anything more than 10 minutes gets boreing fast. The only way to actually enjoy it is to find some people to do it with. I have had some great laughs "hunting" mummies with some people in game.
Pendar my character has been in game around 3 months+- and is only now really able to fight. How ever this is acutally an advantage to my RP and other peoples. How can not being skilled enhance rp ~I can hear people asking allready~. It allows established villians such as members of the skulls to generally beat my character which is actually there right as better/old warriors. Pendar seldom winning allows me to rp from a far vaster scope than the heroic warrior. Which in turn has made him many friends. This game is unique is as much as it is a small population of dedicated gamers who make it turn, Some of whom have been kind enough to take little Pendar under there wing. There is a great flow of rp as my young character learns from these people. Something I could never have created or rped if i had skilled up as a warrior in 2 weeks.
Also the fighting system is set up in such a way that a new character training maybe 3 duels with daggers with Pendar. Is going to teach them more than many hours of whacking the undead. So making social connections really pays of on that front to.
I do undestand why people includeing me wish to up there ability to fight, even with great rp you cant bluff your way through a fight "with some players" and getting pked can suck. How ever I prefer to see a determined young warrior "pestering" me to teach them or duel them over some one spending hours killing skeletons.
~I think the undead are some what of a island pass time and dont really see killing them as powergaming~
As no matter how much you wanted to learn something, I find it hard to believe any one would engage in combat with skeletons or ogres for hours on end. I know it takes many potions, so I "reality" a player has been near hacked to death many times after half an hour of ogre killing.
Yes by all means do it, as your character gets better he may start extreme training like that. The idea though is that it would be a thing one does but wouldnt like doing. So find friends, hunt togther.
Learn weapons train togther,
Make your desire to learn your rp, as apposed to upping your skills to rp.
I hope i make some sense,
Pendar

How do you get better at playing chess? By playing often, against opponents who are better than you.
How do you stagnate at the game of chess? By playing little or often, against opponents who are just as skilled as yourself. You don't adapt to tougher conditions.
Yes, huge problem. Even those who are great bluffers are beaten down, because the players of the "intimdated" are too egotistical to give their character some kind of fear recognition or limit - doesn't make the character that appealing when he's Superman. So, again, that's why pure loss in battle should be feared more. I am, sooo a pioneer of permy death.I do undestand why people includeing me wish to up there ability to fight, even with great rp you cant bluff your way through a fight "with some players" and getting pked can suck.

A new character is always hard, but usually very fun. It's what makes the past of your char, since you will have to become a great warrior, or farmer, when you get there, you can look behind and be proud of your achievements.
PS, Good luck to you PO Kidarien!

All that's really left to say is "good luck" and "don't over-do it" (which has already been stated, but worth dual notation). I look forward to meeting you ingame and potentially working with you to motivate your character in ways other than just working hard.
Best of luck to you, PO Kidarien,

haha...im super permy death person..haha...anyways...yes i dont like to fight monsters by myself...normally the only time i do it is when no one is on or there arent any people that my characters know...id choose rp over monster fighting any time....its crazy becouse its hard for me to even sit there and even practice a trade becouse its so boring to sit there and shift click forever knowing some sort of drama is going on...but when my character gets boring...or what not i always find a way to kill him/her and make sure that there are people around to enjoy my flashy death sceans *G* its great to have people huddled around a dead body trying to figure out the murder...or when your and another person is led into a trap by a angry woman and nearly killed THEN 7 or 8 people show us to nurse you to heath and help you out...i swear..that past week of rp has been great fun and i thank all the other people out there who make time in illarion so grand
