why don't you try it and see, it slows gameplay down severly for me to the point of just being annoying and unplayable if i'm trying to download, but that's because my connection is very bad. It will slow down your gameplay, but exactly how much can't say.

I'm downloading 24/7 and also play Illarion. It's sometimes slow, but it belongs to your connection. I've got DSL and it works good.

look at server rule 10!!
"10. Usage of macros
The use of additional programs which influences the game is not allowed. Expecially macro programs are not allowed."

Thank you all for your advice. I won't be downloading with Illarion anytime soon!
@Muck, sorry I didn't understand that rule, as I didn't know what a Macro was.

ROTFLMAO
What Muck says isn't true! He already got his 'punishment' in the official Illarionchan
A Makro is a program which runs in the backround of a game, if you use something. It's for cheating and does things like smithing by itself without you doing anything, when you think of Illarion. It's not allowed to use such programs.
Downloading also doesn't slow the Illarionserver, it's slowing your own internet connection.
For that: Only play if you think you can stand the lag

It makes your connection slow! There is a rule about not harming the server, but downloading when playing doesn't harm anyone. Nobody else then you has got lag then!!! So you are harming yourself. I've also seen some people from far away with a bad connection which also had lag, when they only had Illarion running. It's not forbitten, you are only harming yourself.

and what if the downloading finished? you go afk and what happens with ur character? what the gms say to it? they have to decide how their rules are ment.

Muck, the only this downloading and playing does is slow down YOUR personal connection.
It doesn't slow down the Illarion server any more then just playing normally. Now it's not recommended downloading and playing if you have dial-up, as Chyan said, you move one block about every 2 or 3 seconds, but if you have cable, DLS, high speed, T1 ect. then it's not problem.
Macros would be something that does a repeated command, if you had a program that when running would just tell your computer to do a series of commands (i.e. Shift + Click, Click) or whatever, you could run that and then your character would start smithing or mining while you go watch TV. That's illegal.

You can download and play.
But if YOUR connection is too slow the Illarionserver will kick you.
If you download is finish and you must look at it, better hit ESC. If the server kick you, its possible that your names get lost ( damage of the names.dat )
But its not always so.

I've been kicked many times and havn't had damage to my name's or anything.
Also, why is it when you minimize your client, if you leave it like that for awhile it kicks you because your connection is slow. Why does it make your connection slow when it's minimized, is it because it's running in the background?

Probably because it is sending no data to the server so it thinks that you have lost your internet connection. (Just a guess)

for somereason when playing illarion (sometimes other games), it sends no "active signals"
and your internet connection (thinking you forgot to disconnect or is no longer in need of a connection) gives you the boot anyway. Just log-in and log-out once in a while if that is the case, open a explorer or somthing to show your active.... Dont think they do that for cable connection or DSL.

well it's not my internet connection that doesn't, when i minimize illarion it boots me out after about a couple of mins tops and my internet connection still works fine cause i just start illarion up again...besides i have my connection set on a 30 minute inactivity disconnect.

When you minimize it on any connection it kicks you out. It is the game that is connected to the server, not your internet explorer. It has been said that minimizing Illarion isn't such a good idea anyways, so do us all a favor who are trying to explain this, hit the "ESC" key

Just my guess from my experience with DX proramming.
DirectX programs are much easier to code if the program only runs when the window is active, that is, on top. That way DX can write directly to the screen and not have as many buffers, etc... So one of the settings in the program tells it to pause when it goes out of scope.
Which means, that when you Alt-Tab away the program pauses, and all the TCP/IP packets from the server are not being responded to, and the client isn't sending any. So, the client and/or server deem it to be a time out, and drops the connection thinking you lost your connection.
You may notice that if you quickly alt-tab away, and back, that a bunch of things jump around on the screen at once, that is all the packets from the server that were backing up while you were alt-tabed away being processed.
Or I could be totally wrong, and it could have something to do with the phase of the moon in Summer Solstice.
