my computer crashes when illarion is running for about 5-25 minutes (it simply freezes, i can't move anything including the mouscursor etc.). i always have to rebbot my computer after this happened.
does anyone else have this problem?
my system:
AMD XP 1800+
win98SE
hercules 3d Prophet 4500 (+tv-out)
sb live!
directX 8.1 (latest version)
it's practically impossible to play illarion that way.

Sometimes the same happens to my computer.
Mostly it is only needed to restart Illarion, but sometimes everything crashes
as you had mentioned.
My System:
Pentium 500
Win 98 SE
Elsa Erazor III video
sb 128
Direkt x 8.1
I thought, it might be my system, because it has some problems
for a while and I had no time to make it new

i tested it now once again:
my mouse-cursor can be moved, but WHEN it is moved, my computer makes strange noises as if it was writing something on my harddisk.
the picture i see does not move (except the mouse), just as if you took a screenshot of illarion.

This is a known sign for a crashed system, i had that often as i used Win89 se.
The only thing you can do, is to restart the computer... (i think it's a Win 98 problem)
I have the same system configuration like you, exept the OS, i use Win2000 and it works fine.
I would say it's a software problem... (OS or drivers or a program in the background causes this crashes, i bet it's not a hardware problem)

hmmm....
I use W98 SE since I started and it works well. I am not an expert but it sounds for me like a memory problem.
my system:
Pentium III 600
ASUS V6600
SB 1024
DirectX 7.x as I started (8.x now)
128mb RAM as I started (512mb now)

a P4 2000hz, WinXP, geforce4,sb pci, T1;
And an AMD 800 with win 2000,onBoard soundcard, T-dsl;
all systems with 256 ram
i tryed direct x 7 and 8 but i never had problems

I also run Illarion with Windows 98 SE, and no problems. I have never seen anyone's system do this to them.... Even Windows 95 has no problems with it. (I guess SOME versions of Win95 can run Illarion) Only difference between my system and the ones mentioned is that I have only 64 mbs of RAM.

@shi long: thanks for your comment, but are you sure?
the mouse-cursor CAN be moved + the computer makes strange noises when moving it (as if writing on HD).
@badmosche: you think my RAM is probably not working properly? (in fact, i had problems with the RAM of my graphics adapter, but i got a new one)
probably it's a program running in the background. i'll try this out later.
thanks anyways,
martin

@martin: yes, it's a crashed system, or can you do someting with the mouse exept moving? Like starting other programs?
There are only a few reasons why a computer crashes after half an hour normal and fine working...
1. a thermal problem (CPU, RAM or some other chips at the mainboard are overheating... most its the CPU
but this can be tested with a simple benchmark testprogram like 3Dmark from:
Mad Onion
If the Demo of this program runs in a looping more than an hour, then you can be sure your hardware and the basic software (most of the drivers) is ok ("be-sure-rate" at 95%
)
2. a softwareproblem: Stack overflow, memory overflow, wrong address writing or access and so on... the most known softwarebugs that happen...
(damn microschrott... ups, i lose control on myself, tztztz)
The third one could be a bad touch with electronics, bad electricity or magic... (j/k) :cheesy:

Hard disc activity is a sign for the paging algorithm. If the memory gets too short, parts of it are placed to hard disc and are loaded again, when needed (by moving something else from memory to hard disc). If the algorithm swaps something to disc and needs it the next moment, gets it back, decides to put on the hard disc again, needs it again .... then you get this effect of hard-disc-sounds. A solution may be more memory (probably on the graphics adapter, since the Illarion graphics is stored there), closeing other memory consuming programs in the background....
Another reason, as already pointed out, may be the heat. The source may be an overclocked processor.
You can also try to start the game without sound and music. This deactivates whole parts of the code and memory usage. At least it is worth a try.

=) no this sound doesn't come from the hard disc... it comes from the speaker in the computer and is caused by the crash...
i know this bug well, i had it often before...

i had the no-sound-and-music-idea as well and used it the last 3 or 4 times and had no crash (but i didn't stay very long in illarion).
the momory of my gfx-card is 64MB, my computer hast 512MB of RAM, i'd think that's enough. heat -- well, i didn't try shi longs program yet (i DLed it but found no time to see what it does...).
maybe shi could assist me later (in 3 or 4 days)

Martin, try disable your "Power Management" or what ever they called on your version. (I have a chinese machine infront of me right now....) HDD is usually set to shut down after 15 ~ 20 min of lack of activities. I've found my win 98 machine IMPOSSIBLE to responde right after that. Sometimes I chat online or just do researches and then since my HDD doesn't move for so long, it just dies out on me... Silly stuff that's done in Windows 9X systems. If that still doesn't work, try getting a copy of windows 2000. It is much more stable, and now that MS is trying to advertise XP, 2000's price is going to drop with the price of XP
