Gems in Trollsbane

Post by Jeremy Gems Willowbrook »

Jeremy walks quietly upto the wall, takes a deep breath, looks around slowly. He places a parchment on the wall and walks away quickly.
The note is written in small untidy writing. In some passages the writing is very shakey and in several small patches the ink has run as if wetted.

To all my friends who, though I have only known you a short while, I feel I owe a great debt. Mia said something to me yesterday which made me think long and hard about myself. She said I was "good". I do not know if this is true now and probably was not in the past. Anyway, I will tell you my story as best I can and you can judge for yourselves. I will not hold anything against anyone and will respect all opinions, good or bad.

I do not know where I was born....other than it was on my parents farm, which was a good few days travel from the nearest town. I worked on the farm as soon as I was able and never celebrated a birthday. So I dont know how old I am.
When i was still quite young the farm was attacked by orcs. My parents were killed and the farm destroyed. I was hit in the head and lucky to surive. I was unconscious for a few days i think. When I came around I was very Sick and the fires were long since cold. I somehow survived for several days or weeks until people came from the nearby town. I was taken to the healers were I stayed for a long time. I was very ill. Suffering from Bad pains and fainting as well as nightmares and grief at the loss of my home and family.

Eventually they sent me to an orphanage. I was bullied constantly and I hated it. I put up with this for a long time as I had nowhere else to go. But one day I just lashed out. A group was tormenting me as usual. I picked up a chair and hit the nearest person. I think I killed him. There was lots of blood. I ran. Fast.
The town was very big with a big harbour area. Plenty of places to hide. I fell in with a group of street urchins, thieves, call them what you will. I stole to survive. I was particularly fond of Gems, which is how I got my nickname. I lived like this for several years until my luck finally ran out. I was caught and put in prison then finally banished from the town. They sent word to neighbouring towns too. So I had nowhere to go.
I lived rough in the wilds for some time and got very sick again. A travelling healer must have found me and taken me back into town. How he got me in I dont know. I woke up and panicked. Fearing I would be caught I fled. I ended up in the harbour and that is all I can remember. Until I awoke at the cross here in Trollsbane.

Well friends, if I still have any friends, that is my story as best I can remember. I know I have done bad things in the past and they will always be a part of me. I want to be a different person. A good person. But with this in my past I dont know if I am or can be. Judge me as you will. But I think it only right that you know the truth. And to Alora and the guards, if you think me a criminal or want to investigate, I put myself at your mercy.
To Mia and others who have trusted me I am sorry. I should have been honest from the start and not let you think I am something I may not be. I am sorry I have let you down.

No apology neccessary at all.

I try hard to judge folks on their actions that I observe and what they do with their life now, not the past. I f they truely are sincere and want to change they can with a little help.

Some folks dont want to change and others do not.
The key is as to the how's and the why's.

I always give things to the new folks and try to help them as best I can because many come here the way you did. Hiding, running or searching. Jumping boats or wandering overland it matters not.

That is why Doc Burlow and myself do what we do.

New starts and new beginnings can be hard to find.

We beleive in giving folks at least a chance to try for a new and better life.

And in Trollsbane somtimes it can be very hard when you are a stranger.

Cannot ignore the past of a person Mia. Past shows everything of a person.

The past is what explains and describes a person. What they do now, can and is most likely lies. Although past, is never a lie.

Pasts

Post by Mia Handur »

Ignoring a persons past and forgiving a persons past who wishes to amend and start anew, are two entirely different things Kasume.

Thoughts and opinions about a person are still brewed on their past.
Whether you try or not.
No one can start new.

Once the present will become past - and then this past is the truth, isn't it?

So....it is totally impossible for anyone to ever change?
A child who steals an apple will become a thief?
The child who pulls the wings off flies will grow up cruel and sadistic?
The stupid person is destined only to wield a sword and can never learn?
I dont think so. What a sad place the world would be if that were so.

You cannot change without a past.
You cannot simply put aside someone's past. It was what makes them.

I don't see how that has anything to do with anything.

Bravo, sir! Kasume didn't yet realize that he had been put to a dead-end.

Lies and truth have nothing to do with present or past. You either do things sincerely or you don't. Doesn't matter when.

Kasume,
Anyone can change.....even you. My past is just that...past. Over. Done.
Now I look to the future. While I am scared of returning to the way I was I will try to improve myself and be better than what I was before.

You cannot force those in their minds about how they should make their assumptions of you.
If the assumption is bad, do not fuss.

While looking through the messages on the board Jeremy finds his old notice.

"Still not sure that was such a good idea....." he says to himself

He takes the paper down and is about to rip it up when he stops. He seems lost in thought for a moment.

"But what of my new friends? Dont they have a right to know too? And all those I have yet to meet. Alaine, Zarine, Boka....have you read this yet? Do you already know? I hope so. Then it is okay but if not you have a right to know."

Jeremy pauses for a moment lost in deep thought. A decision made he puts the paper back on the wall and tacks it in place. He turns, hesitates for a moment then shrugs and walks away.

The words "come what may" linger in the air a moment as he walks away.

Alaine saw a paper on the wall. It was signed by jeremy.
After reading it she said:
"So this is your truth. When I met you you wouldn`t tell me."
She smiles warmly
"You are my best friend, now and forever."

You were honest from the start, hobbit. Since I know you I know this story.
And you sould not mind. We live in the present.
You are surely not the only one to have a shadow in your past.
But today, when I look at you, I can only see light and joy.
Do not worry, friend.

Jeremy, I don't care what you have done in the past. The past shgould only impact those involved. Anyone you meet after that should judge you on what you've done since you've met them, not before. You have been a wonderful friend to me, and others. You're very giving, like there isn't a speck left of your past thievery. If not for your help I wouldn't be as far as I am now, and I am in debt to you.

You slew those who ment you harm. I see no dis-honour in this. If one does not stand his ground, he shall become the doormat for all those who walk his path.

Written in silvery elven script on a dark green leaf, are these words:

"One who has let the old self die away, is surely reborn a new person."

The leaf has been borne on the winds, but it catches the eye even as it flutters away.
