When your playing a thief and you try and steal from someone is there any type of in game system that gives a random chance (of course with some determiners) of you getting some gold or what have you from your victim? Or is it done totally by roleplay in the sense that you do #me attempts to pickpocket <random player>, and then your attempted victim drops an item or some gold if he is good enough to play along with the role play? I suppose of course at some times the victim coudl of course catch them to keep it realistic. If you caught someone though what would you do? Would it be justified in killing them? Or would it be better to just give a warnining hit, and demand your items back?

It is done totally by roleplay. You must decide what would be good roleplay. If you "catch" the thief at work, then I presume you are entitled to fight back...as you might in real life...or perhaps you would roleplay being frightened of the madman holding a knife to your throat, it all depends on the situation.

Ya but I mean, how woudl you catch him in the work right without it looking like your just not playing along with the role play?

If the thief is painfully obvious, then perhaps it would be justified to catch him in the act...say for example, if it's just the two of you-thief and victim.

If the thief is just standing beside you, and types:

#me attempts to steal gold from the man's pocket.

Then the man, depending on his character, would either be entitled to respond:

#me 's pocket flops open and some gold slides from it, into the thief's hands.

However, as the street is empty and it's obvious you're nearby, then the victim is equally entitled to type:

#me feels the man's hand in his pocket (...) and hears the breathing of the thief in the cold and empty street.

ANYWAY...
It all really comes down to how good both of you are at roleplay, and if you're both willing to make some sacrifices for some good roleplay.

Oh ya, why is there a thieving skill thing, if thieving is totally role play?

The skill is not yet introduced to the game. Perhaps you should wait until you make it into the game, where the majority of your questions will be answered.
