Bandits vs Game Rules?
Moderator: Gamemasters
Bandits,, well playing the bandit can be different in so many senses, and if both parties, in this case the bandit and the victim are both good roleplayers, it can be a enjoyable expereince, even for the person getting robbed. Most of the time there should be no reason to actually kill anyone. Come now people if you had someone armed with a bow and they had an arrow aimed in your general direction, would you run across a open field to try and reach some town gates, which themselves would offer you no protection till you got through the created kill area and within the town itself, i think i would rather give the bandit the few gold coins i have, and not tell him about the larger stash i keep hidden down my trousers

I second that.
Cheers to the bandits responsible for the above-mentioned case of good RP.
In real life I've been robbed a few times, and only fought back twice. One time the fighting back was not dangerous, the other time, it was highly dangerous and I could've gotten killed, but from a total of four times of being robbed, I can say the smartest way for me was to co-operate with the "bandits". I can also speak for myself if I say I never thought for one second to try to run from a robberies where I had guns or other weapons pointed at me. You'll probably think of co-operating or fighting, depending if you're smart or you're the hero of the day, but running normally never came into question for me when I was facing weapons, as I was always "unarmed" (although by the laws where I live, being proficient in martial arts makes you automatically considered "armed" if you injure/kill anybody).
That's just some real life for you. I expect from players of RPGs, that they know clearly where the character's place in the RPG is, too. In real life, there are only few heroes when it comes to dire situations, and it's up to your fair judging of the situation and the character, if they are appropriate to make the "hero" emerge.
Also, I'd love to add: the people who kill a bandit just because they tried to rob them (however though the bandit did not immediately threaten their life) and consider themselves of "good" morals are portraying a paradox, or perhaps a double-standard. Just wanted to have that said.

That's exactly what I meant when I wrote common sense.Aristaeus wrote:Come now people if you had someone armed with a bow and they had an arrow aimed in your general direction, would you run across a open field to try and reach some town gates, which themselves would offer you no protection till you got through the created kill area and within the town itself, i think i would rather give the bandit the few gold coins i have, and not tell him about the larger stash i keep hidden down my trousers

When a victim decides to overpower the bandit, I think they should attack each other ingame, and fight till someone backs off, not till death, and then whoever wins - gets the right to choose the RP line which will develop.
If bandit wins - the victim may not walk away. Victim must play along, return to the bandit, and the bandit now can hold a knife to the victim's neck. And the bandit has the right to not take their mask off, therefore - stay unidentified.
And the bandit now gives victim the choice - pay or death.
If victim wins - they have the right to remove the bandit's mask and give their name to everyone. The victim can now RP dodging the knife, twisting the bandit's arm, elbowng the bandit into the crotch, etc. Bandit lost technically, so the bandit now must play along. The victim can now choose to lead the bandit to the guards. The victim can let the bandit go. The victim can shout for help. The victim may kill the bandit and loot them.
Sian made excellent points. Unfortunately, even charming didn't work. One of my chars practices just that very kind of robberies - charming and cunning. And usually it ends up in ladies making excuses, annoying the hell out of the bandit, and when he loses patience, happily running away, breaking the robber's cold grip easily and saying something like "Never come close to me again and leave your charming robbery fantasies..."
Ouch, smokin' failure.
But I have to agree with Sian on the comedy situation. It's a very delicate art of RP - to sense the chars around you. Like, one of my main characters is a very cold, known ruthless, and a very dark man. Dangerous. People would know not to smack him with a fish.
Yet other chars have this sort of comedy tendency and sense of humor, and they have no problem taking an apple to the head.
But I mean... no one would dare throw a pie in Darlok's face, for instance, right? It would just... be untasteful. At least at this point in time, after Darlok became an infamous villain.
