Hmm...
For Illarion to attract more players, it would have to be a little less strict, and the game would need a (near) complete overhaul.
Compare 6 online players to thousands upon thousands on other MMORPGS.
It's what the admin's want, however... and most of you...

Also, six online players who arent twelve year old "uber teh 1337 pwn j00 wit my runite sw0rd and lvl 50 cheese bomb magic spellz0rz" Is far better then "thousands upon thousands"

I think the game is fine the way it is. The GMs do this on their own time, it is they who have the final say. I appreciate all they do and have done for us in the past. The way they chose who plays and who doesn't has worked for the most part so far. There is no way to make the system perfect, and there will always be human error. If someone didn't care for RP much they wouldn't take the time to do the story and would forget about it. There are some who did care and now do not that sometimes ruin the game for others, but they will be weeded out someday.

Server Down
They are doing a great job, the game is evolving every day. I wonder if the server is down to upgrade something, or to change or whatever. I hope it's something BIG like those GFX martin was showing us, that kind of fits, but who knows? If it is something important I'm going to have to write to PO Arcia at his training camp. He said he would bring the full force of the US national guard down on me if I didn't alert him when there was a change. I miss poor Arcia

Screening
I have no problem with the screening of names or a story finishing technique. My only complaint is that it can take Far Too Long to get a final reply. I waited for over three weeks. I finally got a reply after I sent an E-mail telling them patience was a virtue that I was running out of.
I know of another rp'er who is waiting for a reply as we speak. Do not wait too long or you may lose another player.
Other than that I think the gm's are doing a wonderful job in a truely difficult situation.
I also agree, new blood is needed to increase more roleplaying possibilites.
Keep up the good work staff of Illarion!

Mia, you think everyone automatically has the right to play this game, like it is a given. It is not. The gamemasters of Illarion do not stay up late at night hoping for new players to come. They are spending their own money on this server and are spending their own time making this game, it does not belong to the public.
So before you gripe about how long you must waste and threaten the gamemasters by saying they may lose another roleplayer, remember they are people and it is their game, not yours or mine or anyone elses, it is also free.
They account system actually works very fast considering the amount of email they get from people like "Twe" every day.

She never said that everyone was en-titled to an account.
Never did she say that.
She was simply saying that the acceptance takes so long, that even some of the good RPers out there may become impatient. And simply never come to the website again. And even if they *may* get an email, they may just delete it. Because they've completely forgotten about it. And could just not care anymore.
That would mean another possibly good RPer down the drain. Someone that could contribute a good bit to this community. More people never hurt. Especially ones who have been accepted.
She was only saying... That they take quite a long time just to accept you, then it takes even more time to activate you. Yes, a low number of people playing this game actually maintains it very well, but honestly, the average number online has decreased as I've noticed recently. A lot of times would see at least 10 - 13 players connected. Usually I see anywhere from 5 - 7 now.
She never implied that everyone deserves an account.
Perhaps taking another look would make you realize something.
Edit:
PS: I'm *pretty* sure that the Illarion staff wants this community to become better.

Somehow I was under the impression that this particular forums' topic was for constructive thoughts on what may be done to help get more players in Illarion. Perhaps you think that over 30 days from start, (i.e. creating a character) to actual game time, ( i.e. account acceptance), is a reasonable amount of time for anyone to wait. If so then you are blessed with more patience than the average person. And yes, in case you missed it the first time in my original post, which it seems you did, I do agree that the screening is essential. And that commenting on a known fact is not a threat but simply a truthfull observation.
Perhaps you should also re-read my comment regarding the Illarin staff, and you will see that I also applauded them for all their hard work, etc. Having been a facilitator for rpg games myself , I do have an inside perspective on the "Labor of Love" that it truely is.
My regards,
Mia

Read what I write, and don't just rewrite your own posts. If you have a proposal as to make the wait go by longer, be my guest and give a proposal, others do not complain about the long wait.Padishar Strum wrote:I'll add that she shouldn't gripe about the wait without giving a proposal to make it go faster.

I hope it doesn't mean that. It would mean to me that people are discouraging unusual and potentially interesting characters. As it is, we already have hundreds of "standard" fighters, rogues, magi, druids, rangers, etc., etc., all of them capable of doing every craft in the game, including what they're supposedly best at. Powerful characters do not make up for shallow RP. Ibatha's a character who's been interesting in RP right off the bat, regardless of any technicalities.
However; the very fact that there is such a healthy proportion between "sane" and "insane" characters shows me that the screening-staff is doing their homework right - many cheers to them. You can tell there are a few well-played insane characters in the game (Ibatha, Bronzebeard, and Shilly to name three I've encountered ig), and many "normals", which would about realistically reflect a common medieval fantasy society (whatever the benchmark for that is).

What's your standard of a "healthy proportion" of sane and insane characters? I would have thought that 3 was already more than enough in such a small community.
By the way, how do you differentiate between a "well played insane character" from someone who just likes to be a goofball and spew out drivel because they're simply bored with acting like a normal person?

No Ciegan Ibatha it doesn't meant anything about you not being in the game. It was only used as an example to illustrate the ignorance of some of the things people post in the forum. Do not take it personally as it was not intended to attack you in anyway. Since it is being misunderstood as to it's meaning I will happily delete it at once. I did not intend you harm. My sincerest of apologies to you.
Deeply regretfull,
Mia

No, Sian I did not mean Ciegan should not be a player. Read my apology letter please. And I do agree with you, the diversity of characters is an important part of the whole game concept and the only thing that keeps it from growing stagnant. My intent was misunderstood and that is mostly my fault, due to the way in which I wrote it. It will be deleted ASAP.
Sincerely,
Mia

As I wrote, I like it the way it is. As you write it, something must be changed, as you imply there that there are too many insane characters for your taste. I can only say from my own ig-experience from the past weeks, that there are never more than two insane characters online at a time, if any at all (not to mention the chance that you're immediately around them ig) - which would serve for a perfect balance in my taste. Anyhow, I think the careful screening of new players/characters is to thank for it.Dyluck wrote:What's your standard of a "healthy proportion" of sane and insane characters? You somewhat answered the question yourself. If the character does not appear to be the latter, there must have been some thought and quality time put into the character.Dyluck wrote:how do you differentiate between a "well played insane character" from someone who just likes to be a goofball and spew out drivel because they're simply bored with acting like a normal person?
A "well-played insane character" is definitely one like Ceigan Ibatha, who, to be quite frank, greatly contributes to the game*. In other words, a "well-played insane character" is one who stays memorable because the character was played well, perhaps because you can sense the particular form of mental dementia that has befallen the character.
This thread is about getting new players into Illarion (or not getting new players into it), and if it's turning into something about scaring off the potential players that might have original ideas hidden somewhere, I think we should end it here (and cover discussions about insane characters in a new thread).

I second that.Konstantin K wrote:In my opinion Ceigan is a crazy nut, the jester which the town lacked and needed so much!
Credits here go to PO Ceigan, who plays an "insane" character better (imho) than some people play "sane" characters. Insane doesn't necessarily mean evil or violent.

Roleplaying etc.
I agree, and I agree again with Sian and K.K. on those previous two posts. And I agree that Ceigan Ibatha is indeed colorful and well played character.
Well done all,

I'm still wondering what your standard of a "healthy proportion" is.Moirear Sian wrote:As I wrote, I like it the way it is. You know 3 is more than enough for me. I still have no idea where the range of your "proportion" is, except by number present online, but I don't think that's a very effective way of measuring "proportion". Maybe you never thought of an overall proportion, but that's fine.
So how do you tell if a character is one or the other? What reproducable qualities can you observe to make your decision? Can you elaborate on this "form of mental dementia" that you can sense from him that sets him apart as one rather than the other? You somewhat answered the question yourself. If the character does not appear to be the latter, there must have been some thought and quality time put into the character.Dyluck wrote:how do you differentiate between a "well played insane character" from someone who just likes to be a goofball and spew out drivel because they're simply bored with acting like a normal person?

For example, how would you explain this to someone new who was trying to learn how to properly roleplay an insane character? To say "contributes to the game" and "stays memorable", doesn't exactly help them very much. Could you give them something a little more specific to work with?
Perhaps you could explain to our potential new players about some of the observable and reproducable qualities of a well played insane character so that they may learn those, rather than the qualities of a "drivel spewing goofball".
i really dont know where you want to go..
an insane person is not reproducable in any way.. thats why he is insane.. of course there are simmilar symptoms and sideeffects but the insanity itself is mostly very diverse.. i dont think that there can be given advice on that topic.. i mean the insanity just needs to fit the character and the game world and i think its totally ok to play..
of course its no good when 10% of the active players want to be insane.. but i dont think that it will come that far..
as for that that i am a fairly new player i need to say that this thread is very confusing and sometimes leads in the wrong directions just as sian said.. surely no good lecture for one who wants to get started on illarion.. but thats just my opinion..
