Woah, woah, woah there people! Can't we all just get along?
The way I see it,
BOTH SIDES had valid points.
Arkadia had given my Vahkos character the only other 'key' to the gate an hour or two before this attack occurred. We assumed it was going to be a nice, quiet day after our characters worked on diplomacy. However, Moyave and Avaloner arrived to pay Darlok "a tribute" with a trout at his grave. Some time later, a whole bunch of invaders attacked but we didn't close the gates. My character nor Arkadia made it in time, and we both were "mortally wounded" (I use this term instead of 'kill,' because most people can only die once; it makes more sense this way...so basically, we turned to clouds).
You guys mowed us down like elephants. Ouch.
So, after we're all surprised, I decide, "Hey...maybe if I use this key I just got to cleverly lock their butts in the castle, we can make them die of starvation, or shoot arrows at them, or something." So sure enough, I had two guys try and push the attackers into the castle, where I locked it.
I always imagined the gates were both inside and outside unlockable; anybody can close it, but to open, it takes a key. Hence the reason it is completely impassible if closed, unless Ark or I use the key.
A moment or two later, I decided this was unfair RP. Although I could've easily trapped the attackers and kept it that way, I remember, that I was already "mortally wounded" first and can no longer take action resisting the attackers for a while. So I reopened the gates, and hoped everybody would forget I closed the gates at all.
Later on, I heard that the character Zesh got too curious and tried to play with the gates, to see what they would do. He closed them, and anybody could, but couldn't reopen those gates. So a GM, who was saving a poor little cloud from inside, opened it up for his escape. But in my opinion, the gates should've been closed again after that cloud was out, because the character Zesh closed them in the first place. The only players with keys were Arkadia and my own, therefore they couldn't be opened.
So, hey, in the RP world, Zesh screwed it up for the rest of Trollsbane because of the lizardmans' overly inquisitive personality of "Hm, wonder what happens if I close something that locks up when it closes", and their entry might've been delayed for a few days until they could hunt us down or something. I don't think it's fair to mess with technical functions in the game, strictly for OOC reasons while ignoring IC behavior. The player of Zesh was obviously trying to figure out if he could access the gates, and enter any old time he wanted regardless of the fact that he isn't 1 of the 2 only roleplaying keyholders on the freakin' island. He doesn't hold a key. So logically, he should stop trying to open the doors and take advantage of technicalities over the roleplaying aspect.
Roleplaying is a matter of honesty people. Quit trying to use the technical fuctions for your benefit.
But then again, the thing could've been bashed down by 20+ people if they used one of those big bashing logs together, and there was no defenses when we were gone.
IN CONCLUSION:
Both parties had their roleplaying mistakes pretty equally, so I say we forget about all the small stuff and simply say that Trollsbane has taken it over. Good job guys, Ghengis Khan had more trouble taking over China.
But remember; we made it difficult, but not impossible, for Northerot to be taken over. So I hope, in turn, it will be very difficult, but not impossible, for it to get back in our hands. Remember, my character was appointed a High Priest and Royal Advisor. Not to mention the whole ordeal left his face horribly scarred, meaning he no longer has a "pale, handsome face." Now he has a "pale, it looks like I fed my face to wolves face." He isn't going to give up very easily.
@Arkadia - Please, please, please come back. Your character is very fun to roleplay with, and this really isn't too big of a deal. It gave Illarion a much needed thrill, and now there's more space to work with on character development. Besides, if it were to be taken back, would you want ME being the ruler?
