Melons

Post by Gro'bul »

We need melons, the island is tropical and melons would be a great new crop. I did some research and found that melons like warm weather with moderate amounts of water, they also grow rather fast. From seed to maturity it is 60-70 days. I am refering to the muskmelon (aka Cantaloupe in the USA) and I made some gfx to support my proposal.

http://www.angelfire.com/alt2/majham/melonoverveiw.png
(I know they aren't the right size, I just wanted an example not to big of size in a decent format)

Here you can see from right to left is the growing process of the melon, below is seeds and the lone cantalope. My idea for the melons is that they grow quickly (2/3 time of grain) and generate decent income, however, they take a 3x3 perfect square to plant. You would need to let them overripen (to the point of being useless for eating), and scoop out the middles destroying the fruit to get seeds. You plant the plant in the middle of the square, and wait for it to grow, when the melons are ripe you just "use" them to pick them. I think max amount of melons possible should be about 4, and Eliza buys them for 3g each.

Growth steps: small plant, larger plant, flowering plant, flowering plant with immature melons, plant with mature melons.

the island is tropical
How do you know that? And when did you last see sheep somewhere tropical? They'd die!, besides tropical areas don't usually have pine trees either...

But nonetheless, I like the idea of melons! n nice gfx too.

Only one question. You've got 5 graphics for the melons growing, how long were you thinking it should take to grow? Longer than Cabbages?

No, accually shorter than grain. I read somewhere that grain takes 100-120 days from seed to harvest, whereas muskmelons take about 60-70 days. I just made a graphic for each dramatic developement of the plant, its not to say they will all be used.

I think they should use the 1rst, 4rth, and 5th graphic. only one thing though... I think the melons are too "boring" make them green or something (like watermelons :P )

Also, how were you thinking that you get seeds?? You could use a cool knife tool and carve out the seeds

I must agree that we need more crops thus making farming several jobs in its own. I woud not have thought of melons but I like your graphics. I think onions should be a crop rather than a "weed".

Thats a good one Gurik! Farming not being fun or a good job  . I don't think berrys should be farmable but Tomatoes and onions, We already have the graphic for them. Also Carrots would be fun to farm as well.

I don't mind right now...You know when you make a farmer char that you will be only to techincally grow something. You can RP other farming things, my bard can't do anythign really, but I had that in mind when I created him.
