On the Library Roof

Post by Tari Ancalime »

Tari sits on the roof of the library. She has just returned from a short visit somewhere. Tari sings a dull, sad song when she hears wings flapping. Her hawk lands on her shoulder and drops a message. The hawk flies away. Tari reads the message. It is from Athian, her 'adopted brother'. Tari finishes the letter and sighs, she was going to tell Athian something, but now it is useless, for he does not want to be her 'brother' anymore.

None of them know the half of it. None of them know the whole story of what happened to her so long ago. Tari does not know how to tell anyone what happened. No one seems to be a friend now. Not even her cousin seems to care, if he ever did. Tari holds a long rope in her hands, she brings it with her everywhere just in case it is needed. Tari takes a large metal nail and a dwarven smithed hammer and hammers the nail into the roof near the edge. She ties the rope into a lasso on one end and the other end she ties around the nail.

Should she go like this? What would people say as they pass by the library and see her dangling body? Perhaps she should cut her wrists and bleed to death, some people might think it was a murder and not an act of suicide.

Tari has no one else left in the world. No one will care if she is gone now. She might as well go.

...But she can't. What if it does not work? What if someone comes and sees Tari while she is doing it? Tari sits there and thinks to herself. She does not have enough courage to do it yet, but she still sits there, sits there and sings a sad sad song.

Hammering sounds from the library roof.

Damien opens one eye.

Hammering sounds again.

The elf sighs, stands up, and climbs upstairs, to see a person sitting there, singing a sad song. Seeing the rope, Damien raises an eyebrow. He thinks, for a second.

"Erhmh... Excuse me. But that plan of yours will not be likely to work properly. It has, in fact, a simple technical weakness..."

"What plan? I am going to catch that bird with that rope soon..... it keeps annoying me. I do not see a weakness in my plan, but maybe a cage would be easier to catch it with. Oh well." Tari replies in a lie. She waits until the man leaves and then she continues singing. Another note reaches Tari and she reads it. It is from Athian again. Tari reads it and smiles slightly. She continues to sit there though, and hums the song now.

The elf's eyes narrow a little, as the person mentions the bird. Obviously, he does not take it for the truth, but he nods politely and returns downwards.
A short while after, Damien is just relaxing, reading in his library chamber, the sound starts again. Again, the elf raises an eyebrow.
A little angry about this disturbance, he mumbles something about weird humans and their lack of reason, half expecting to see someone fall from the library roof with a stupid rope around his neck, with a nail at the ropes end unable to hold the weight.
Some few moments later, a nice fire crackles in the chimney, some wet wood on the top of it produces some nice smoke. A small spell is quickly used to bring the smoke into the right direction.
"That should make it quite uncomfortable on the library roof - even for people with suicidal tendencies and an overgrown sense for dramatism..."
Since it is time for lunch, Damien quickly arranges a solid cooking pot over the flames, and starts peeling onions.
