Well, it doesn't look like it links up properly, things are in the wrong place slightly. You know what would be a good idea? Getting a real crossbow to work from. My father has one, but with a few bits removed so it can't fire bolts through skulls.
Howto put this in a nice way...... It looks like crap, it's two bits of wood with a large metal spike shoved through it. Where do you put the bolt? How do you fire it? It looks like a badly made pickaxe, and it's upside down, the string goes on top, if it didn't the bolt would fallout when you loaded it. There is nothing keeping the string in place, and unless it is upside down the string wouldn't disappear into the wood, Nilo, have you ever actually seen a crossbow?
Actually, Moathias image is a quite good one to model from. I made a simple crossbow model from it which still lacks detail and has to be textured yet but it's fairly good considering I only put about two hours of work into it and I'm using a new tool that I'm not really familiar with yet.
It's called Wings 3D, a free modeller that mainly works with subdividing polygons. The interface is crap to be honest but the functionality more then makes up for this.
I'm working on the textured version. I'll have to do that in poser cause I couldn't find out how to import a texture yet.
I know the metal looks like plastic. That's because I mapped the model wrong, and now I can't add reflection to the metal parts witout adding it to the wood too.
Good, but a crossbow would have some sort of catch to ready a shot, and a heavy crossbow has a winding mechanism. What kind of crossbows do we have in Illarion, light or heavy?
Rynt, are light and/or heavy crossbows more or less powerful than an average bow? Average bows in game are not as good as crossbows so that would be some way of finding that out.
A light crossbow would be lighter to hold and use, and able to be drawn by hand (Without a mechanism).
Heavy crossbows would be heavier,so harder to use, but have a winding mechanism to pull the bowstring, so probably do more damage.
With crossbows, it would probably depend on characters stats. The heavy crossbow needs the mechanism, and is usually slower to load and fire than a light crossbow. But with a low strength, a light crossbow would also be hard to use.
Are you sure the bow part wouldn't be wood? Iron isn't terribly flexible, and thin iron can be brittle and if it bent probobly wouldn't bend back, and they didn't have elastic. It would solve the plastic looking problem, even though you haven't scaled it to illarion so it might not matter at that size.
