Hard Skills to Raise - some skills are too hard to improve!

Post by Lord Chaos »

Some of the skills in the game are too hard to raise.  These include Goldsmithing, Tailoring, and Baking.  They either go up too slowly or are too expensive to raise.  My mining skill is very high and I can only RARELY find gold nuggets.  Plus, when I try to smith them, it always fails.  I think that some skills should be slightly altered to make the game more realistic.

Actually most skills are far too easy to raise.
Even goldsmithing is not that hard - just buy some nuggets from other players and your smithing skill will increase as if you had found the nuggets yourself :)

The skills may be easy to raise later in the game, but for people who have only been playing a month or two, the skills remain impossible to raise.

Its supposed to be a long time before you master a skill anyways, not just a month or two.

It does not take that long and that is the problem! skills are much too easy to raise the point is is that it does not make sense for skills to be easy to raise gold nuggets aren't hard to get just mine a lot!

Sure you can easily master any skill in mere days if you log into the game just to do one thing repeatedly the whole day.

:o WHAT??? TOO HARD??? Forget it!!!

I think, all skills (including goldsmithing) are too easy to raise. And its too easy to learn all skills. I play RPG since 10 years and Ive never met a Char who is master in black-, goldsmithing, carpentry, tailoring, baking and glass making. :)

Yes, that's also my opinion ... it's too easy to raise the skills to maximum ...

well, excuse me and my bias, but I think the guy's got a point.  His point is not that skills should've been easier to make, but should be some what balanced.   For me, the best square I found on goldnuggets is about 10 every 100, that's a fairly decent square.  now, if we were to use that for example, we get 37 38 iron and coal, about 15 gems and 10 nuggets.  now, your gold smith gains at only 1/3 of what black smith does.  A skill shouldn't be that much harder then another.  Yes, it is suppose to take time, but not forever, right?  Also, some of the "max" is simply too little.  For tailory, I did about 400 wool to cloth to robe, and I've got  pretty much max.  I can almost do ANYTHING in tailory in one try.  So, I guess we should make the skills gaining speed about the same, and raise the max limit.  That'll balance the game out more...

Yah, but gold IS a rare material. And not everyone must become a goldsmith.
So if you can get the nuggets, you can learn goldsmithing too.
The overall balancing can be done later in the game... what counts now, is the development of new features and stuff.

Most of you think it is the goal of the game to be maxed in every skill. For me this is not the goal and I won't support players who want to achieve this goal. Look at your hometown. There is perhaps one doctor for 1000 people. There are less doctors if you look for specialists like brain surgery. There is no need for every citicen to be a brain surgerist. I bet if we would introduce the skill brain surgery in Illarion, at least 30% of the players would try to max it with methods like powergaming.

Select one or two crafts to master and let the others be mastered by someone else. This means: Most of you, sell your gold nuggets to someone who can use it. This way this one will have higher success rates than you would have achieved and can sell the items back to you much cheaper (or trade for goods you can produce).

And another thing you seem to forget:
if you smith 100 goldnuggets I suppose the effect will be around the same as when you smith 100 iron ore. So the skills ARE quite balanced and raise in an equal way. The point that you find far less goldnuggets than ore is a whole other thing. Of course gold is much more rare than iron, would be quite unrealistic if not... I think the 10% you mentioned are still very high.

Hmmmm i personally think skills should take longer to
raise because of all the cray new people who walk up and slaughter
everyone in there first night of playing. no i do not have names of
these people.

Ok, i'm new to Illarion and all but i myself have been Rp'ing a looong time. Just a suggestion for skills, but maybe race should make a difference for the skills also?
For example, a Dwarf who's favorite thing to mine is gold should perhaps find it easier to mine. Blacksmithing and goldsmithing would also be easier for a dwarf, since it's what they're good at. As where say maybe an Elf would be better at Lumberjacking and carpentery, since they are a woodsy people and other races would be more unused to such skills. Just like Elf's aren't good close-combat fighters, they'd not be the best at blacksmithing and other strenous, muscle involved crafts.

It is planned to get a set of start skills depending on the race.
