Rules for Newbies - let's not segregate the newbies

Post by Novus »

I have noticed some posts in this area talking about rules exclusively for newbies and places not recommended for newbies and such...

I once played an online RPG (text-based MUD, don't remember the name) where the newbies came into a certain area at creation.  They were given starting eq, and told where was wise for them to go.  Then, once they got to a certain level, they would go to the next place, where the monsters were appropriate for their level.  Then, once they reached another level, they went to another place, and so on.  Everything was laid out; players had to go here or there, die quickly, or advance way too slowly.

My point is this:  I like the interaction level between newbies and veterans.  Whatever is decided about the future, please keep the world at large open for beginners, don't confine them to one area.  It is better to make them feel like a part of the whole.  Fresh faces can make a game great.

Rules for Newbies

Novus has a good point i to played a text based Mud that had a school for newbies. The would fight and gain Exp till they got to a certain lvl then they had to leave. I think that would be good for this game so newbies can get a good start for the world ahead. Another thing that I think would make this a good game would be levels. Levels that made you Hit points increase and their Mana increase because i have found out that the mana runs out way to fast in this game.

I wanted to say that schools for newbies and such are a bad idea.  They usually concentrate on aspects of a game that are totally different from the game itself, especially in a role-playing-dominant world.  The school may give the newbie the wrong idea of what Illarion is about, and may turn him/her away unnecessarily.  Or, the newbie may grow to like what is in the school, only to find out things aren't the same in the game at large.

In response to what Kirk said:

It is good for new players to be familiar with the handbook, but we shouldn't force it.  The controls for Illarion aren't all that hard to learn without the documentation, if someone takes the time to help.  The help builds rapport with the new player, who may base his decision to stay on the friendliness of the other players.

Also, the manuals are confusing and outdated, as are the in-game help files.  I was thoroughly familiar with them before I started playing, and I still needed help when I started.  I didn't know how to build a fire until a few days ago.  My apologies to anyone who worked on the manual, but it is quite confusing.

My opinion

Don't loose sight.

Fighting isn't for every character. Levels are NOT a part of Illarion and if someone starts off and needs help they have the manual that they downoad with the game. Everything after that is trial and error as it should be. OIf course some thigs They can't possibly know which is why they ask other players.  Everything else is common sense. Don't confuse nor comlicated things huh?

That is right, Kjalljha. I gues fighting isn't for me, too. At least not now. Darkwalker killed me with ONE! hit, that was yesterday evening, AFTER the update. He was never able to do so before, and i was wearing full armor, and shield, and firesword. My attributes are balanced to fit fight and magic, so they're not extreme high but still the upper average, and i should at least hold some attacks even from strong guys. And, i was not able to hurt him myself. and i have very good fighting skills!
Darkwalker, we have to duel again, to test this stuff and report to the Mags if we find something.

Well I am a newbie and I dont get anything so far, I mean I can probably understand basics like what the hammer is for and the shovel. Still I dont get the controls yet, but I havent bothered anyone with it just yet I was gonna look around the forum for some help. I can however say that the manual and tutorial does not seem to work for me, I try to open them and my computer just freezes....
